This house is absolutely fascinating

It looks to me as if it's been a loving family home and the owner has perhaps just got too old to keep on top of it. So much stuff but the swing in the garden and photos on the walls make me feel so sad for this place now.

@Cissyandflora

Op do you know whether there is anyway to search for this type of property on Rightmove? The farmhouse type? Or did you just come across this?
I just stumbled across it, sorry. You could show it to agents in the areas you are looking at and ask them to keep an eye out for something similar but smaller/cheaper for you.

That's a life well lived . Picture of a girl on the wall in the dining room.
It feels to me like the husband living on his own, the computers looks old and plenty of elderly men in particular like connecting with the world through a computer .

My house will end up a smaller less grand version of that in 40 years I'm sure . I want memories everywhere.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 24/06/2021 21:48

That house is a thing of nightmares! 😱

Wallpapering · 24/06/2021 23:06

Love it and I already see where I’d have my own vegetable patch. Hope who ever buys it does it up so retains cottage/farm feel.

scrivette · 24/06/2021 23:20

I love it. It's really quite beautiful.

There was an Amazon parcel on the bed so I think a much younger family member is living there and was caring for his elderly grandmother. None of the grandchildren want to sell as it's a happy and loved home. Maybe overthinking slightly!

MurielSpriggs · 24/06/2021 23:47

It really is beautiful. I do feel for whoever is having to deal with the sale - the emotional and practical trauma of emptying out that house will be huge.

CrotchetyQuaver · 25/06/2021 00:06

All the Calor gas cylinders will likely be for heating. Possibly cooking too. No sign of any radiators anywhere. That will be beautiful when it's all up and together again, going to cost a lot to get it there though.

Member589500 · 25/06/2021 00:14

Oh it’s beautiful.
I am house hunting right now. Must stop depressing myself by looking at what I can get outside London. Imagine sitting on the step in the morning sun with a coffee. All that space Envy

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/06/2021 00:17

It all makes sense and old persons home and then... there are all the computers... what's that all about!

The most computer savvy people I know are older, my 90 year old grandad was glued to his.

I would suggest you haven't seen many homes that are in a real state of you think this is bad OP, it's just lived in and not painted grey.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 25/06/2021 01:01

Looks like a sad home with much history and possibly many stories to tell if the walls could talk!

However on the positives - given the condition including major structural as seemingly long neglected plus the surrounding land - this is an obvious blank canvas demolition and redevelopment plot or at best to gut and rebuild interior. This is all providing the numbers as in purchase price per square foot plus land dimensions including redevelopment planning consent makes economic sense in that particular south west England locality. Has potential to but dependent on cost versus final new valuation. Alternatively redevelopment into separate plots of detached properties may work for a local builder developer.

DeathByWalkies · 25/06/2021 01:23

I'm sure there's at least 3 genetations of the family shedding tears over the loss of a much loved family 'seat'!

MurielSpriggs · 25/06/2021 02:21

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

this is an obvious blank canvas demolition and redevelopment plot

The house is grade-2 listed, highly unlikely that's being pulled down.

(And if there's the slightest sniff of potential for planning permission for residential development on the three acres of surrounding fields then the estate agent is doing a terrible job marketing it at that price!)

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 25/06/2021 02:31

@ MurielSpriggs

Not read the sales platter! Just glanced at photos. Obviously Grade 2 listed would indeed limit redevelopment possibilities as I imagine although not clear from poor and cluttered photos - some original period interior will also require careful restoration to former period correct original quality perhaps even using sympathetic rare workmanship skills and materials. Would be priced accordingly ie lower than with redevelopment potential. The exterior can be put right to former glory as long as original structures are sound. Possibly an estate sale?

Can get so much for your money out of London!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/06/2021 10:39

That’s v cheap for area, especially with all the land.

There’s a filing cabinet too. I think someone (male) is living there and WFH. I think a son who didn’t ever move out.

OP how did you stumble across this?

I know the area vaguely and it’s on a busy main road so not as remote as it looks.

Backhills · 25/06/2021 10:41

I think the former resident would be horrified at those photos, I bet it never looked like that when they lived there, no matter how old or ill they got. The family have already been in and started "sorting".

It would have been dated but lovely IMO.

SilentPanic · 25/06/2021 10:49

I love that bathroom suite! I saw one bathroom on pinterest where people had repurposed old suites to that nothing matched- a blue toilet, an avocado sink, a maroon bath. It was ace!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/06/2021 10:50

Had a look at the virtual tour. It’s definitely underpriced. It’s going to need a lot of work. Will be fantastic when it’s restored. It’s cheap for a reason.

malificent7 · 25/06/2021 10:55

Beautiful but needs work. Great bit of land!

Wallpapering · 25/06/2021 11:08

I’m guessing someone has stayed to look after elderly relative and has set up working from home.

It’s a major job having to clear house like that out especially if traveling back and forth, the bed was made where filing cabinet & desk is.

Definitely house that would of been once thought as glorious but becomes unmanageable if elderly.

It’s not sellers actual home, it’s type that doesn’t need tidying to see potential.

Looking at floor plans so much space

Who’s buying it bcos I’d like to see the after photos.

VenusClapTrap · 25/06/2021 11:13

It’s gorgeous. Reminds me of when my neighbour’s house was sold after he died. All his worldly goods on display, coat still hanging on the peg and shoes neatly sitting by the door. He had no relatives and his estate was left to charity. The solicitors dealing with it sent in a house clearance company once contracts had been exchanged, and I watched them spend an entire day just tipping all his personal effects unceremoniously into a skip.

It made me feel really sad. A whole life just chucked in the bin like that, in one day.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/06/2021 11:17

Looked more into it. Yes, it’s on an incredibly busy road. I think part of the farm has been sold off over the years.

You’d need decent double glazing to block out the noise. Massive construction around the house. Photos very clever not to show that. Looks like it’s remote.

Would be a great house when restored. Access is difficult as it’s bang on a road half way up a hill. Can’t work out how you access it.

I’ll see if I can find out more.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/06/2021 11:33

I love it but needs a lot of work which may be trickier because of Grade 2 listing.

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 30/06/2021 21:44

@DobbyTheHouseElk how you get into it off the road you mean? It’s a small entrance, you can see the black car and white van on the street view & the tiny drive, then the Ariel view

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 30/06/2021 21:47

Is it doing that thing where photos look like they haven’t posted but then post several times?
