Gas hob/induction hob?

FuzzyPuffling · 23/06/2021 20:10

I realise this is going to be a case of personal preference, but...
I need a new hob (currently I have a gas one)

Should I get an induction one (Looks better, if the Govt insist in removing gas in the future I might be stuffed, will need new pans) or a gas one (I know and like gas, cheaper to install but looks clunkier and harder to clean)

Sell one or the other to me please!

I like my induction hob and pleased I got it even though i said I would never move from gas.

The best bit is the cleaning. So much easier and always looks good.

Livingintheclouds · 23/06/2021 20:17

Gas for me. The government won't make you retro fit an electric one.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 23/06/2021 20:20

We have induction- I love how quick it is, even boiling a pan of water is noticeable quicker than our old gas hob.

And the cleaning- just a quick swipe with a cloth compared to the ball ache of wiping grease and general grime off from between the gas outlets.

I had an induction hob for 10 years. Loved it. Moved to a flat with a gas hob. So much worse and so difficult to keep clean. Also,
I missed the timer facility of the induction hob. Put something on to cook for, say, ten minutes on the timer. Then you go and sort out the washing or get chatting on the phone. The pan just turns itself off. So useful.

Mosaic123 · 23/06/2021 20:33

Luckily I needed a new kitchen and now have an induction hob again. 90cm wide.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/06/2021 20:36

I love my induction hob for all the reasons stated above, I'll never have anything else.

ComtesseDeSpair · 23/06/2021 20:38

I’ve never had gas and really dislike using it when I have to on holiday or at friends’ houses. Though to be fair, I’m not much of a cook and have induction because it looks sleek and fits the aesthetic of my kitchen, rather than because I care about whether it’s the better option for cooking or not. However, DP does all our cooking and always preferred gas, but now says he’s an induction convert; modern induction is very sensitive and not at all like old ceramic hobs.

We rented in Cornwall three years ago. There was an induction hob. For two days, it was horrendous. Seriously ….
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

By the time we went home, it was top of my desire list. Years on, we still don’t have one but I would dearly love to. Once I got it, it was fab.

Induction!

boringcreation · 23/06/2021 20:45

Induction, a pot of water boils in seconds (way faster than gas) and the cleaning - oh the cleaning - is sooo much easier.
The only issue you'd have is if you wok fry frequently and even then you can buy a wok support that goes on the hob.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 23/06/2021 20:49

I am a massive fan of gas cooking, but we decided when we were having the kitchen redone to go for induction.

Pros were easier to clean, easier to replace (ours is a plugged variety so no engineer needed), our pans were all fine anyway bar a cheap frying pan that was no loss, it's fast as hell.

Cons are that it's weird to cook with and takes some time to get used to, less control over heat though more than an old electric hob.

Most meals are fine, pancakes are a mission for some odd reason.

We've not had a gas oven for ages now as the house came with an electric one and we couldn't be bothered to change it. Now have a pyrolitic cleaning one and that function alone makes me prefer it over gas

FuzzyPuffling · 23/06/2021 21:02

Mmmm food for thought here. ( An apt saying)
I do a fair amount of work cooking, but a blooming great frying pan with deep sides would do the job, wouldn't it?

Getting used to it sounds a pain.

Actually, I hate cooking in general!

Thread on this only a couple of days ago

I was a die hard gas fan for years then we moved to a place with induction and I am converted. It is so fast, powerful (wok cooking is no problem) and so easy to keep clean.

Roselilly36 · 24/06/2021 07:39

We had an induction hob install last week, so impressed with it, ours is Bosch, easy to clean, boost function has water boiling so fast. Would go back, previously had ceramic & gas hob. Induction is far superior IMHO.

MiniMaxi · 24/06/2021 07:46

Induction! Had gas previously, I liked the control but hard to clean and husband has a tendency to forget to turn the job off.

Took a little while to get used to induction in our new place but love it now (and use a flat bottomed wok all the time)

MiniMaxi · 24/06/2021 07:46

Hob!

KatzP · 24/06/2021 07:50

Another induction fan here. Hate other electric type hobs but find induction as responsive as gas. As others have said hob itself is easier to clean and I find my kitchen doesn’t get as dirty overall.

Hanhan99 · 24/06/2021 07:50

I would swear by gas! But after reading all of the comments it seems like induction would be best. I really want to try it now but will be a long time before I can upgrade our kitchen:(

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 24/06/2021 07:50

We went from induction back to gas with a house move…18 months now and I am so looking forward to new kitchen in about 4 weeks and back to induction. .

It’s quicker, cleaner, easier.

Only thing is my griddle pan but I think I didn’t leave it long enough to heat up….

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 24/06/2021 07:52

@Hanhan99. We’ve bought a 75£ portable induction from curry’s while kitchen being renovated, been using it on the gas hob as gas cut off for renovation work. . It’s brilliant and I’m going to hang on to it as an extra handy portable hob. Might be worth a look?

Hanhan99 · 24/06/2021 07:55

@BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush ooh really? I’ve not heard of that before. It sounds good but I’m not sure if I would have space in our kitchen to have it out all the time. Is it just a single hob?

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 24/06/2021 08:11

Just a single hob. We put it on top of the gas hob we aren’t using.

Mosaic123 · 24/06/2021 09:16

You can just put a single one away in a drawer if you are not using it.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 24/06/2021 09:17

induction hob, hands down.
looks nicer, heats faster, safer & easier to clean
