Gas hob/induction hob?

FuzzyPuffling · 23/06/2021 20:10

I realise this is going to be a case of personal preference, but...
I need a new hob (currently I have a gas one)

Should I get an induction one (Looks better, if the Govt insist in removing gas in the future I might be stuffed, will need new pans) or a gas one (I know and like gas, cheaper to install but looks clunkier and harder to clean)

Sell one or the other to me please!

Oh wow thank you for this thread OP! I think I will look at getting a single induction hob. I rarely use more than one at a time anyway. I am actually very excited about this now!! Is that sad? 😂

we got this one. It's noisier than the one that was on my freestanding cooker in the old house. But nothing that bothered me. And the buttons take a little bit of getting used to but once you've used it a couple of times it's fine.

I have recently had to consider the same OP. I've always had a gas cooker and loved it. Currently have a 7 burner range cooker. Moving to a bungalow with an induction hob and immediately started working out how I could change it for a gas one. My son, a chef, talked me out of it, explained it all to me and I have now bought a lovely new set of pans suitable for induction hobs. A great excuse for new pans and I am looking forward to all the benefits of induction that I have heard/read about.

Induction all the way!

Had both and thought was a die hard gas fan, but induction is so much better - so easy to clean, literally one quick wipe across, more child safe (cools quicker after use than gas or ceramic), water boils in a jiff, heat control more accurate (both low temp simmering and high temp frying ie for steaks).

Have moved to a house with gas hob and burns everything, even on lowest setting, pain to clean - desperate to get induction back!

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 24/06/2021 10:52

This is timely. I'm due to move to a house with an induction hob and it's reassuring me. I've always used gas, but I find the rings are a bit iffy. I have a flat bottomed wok that is not easy to balance until it's full (so heating the oil is a challenge!). Also the safety feature that cuts off the gas if it's not lit can be a bit temperamental. I've turned back to cold pans cos they are not lit as I didn't hold it long enough.

I'm getting new pans as a housewarming present, so bring it on.

Oooh great! Thanks @BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush!

Luckily I have a bit of money saved up so I am going to order it today ☺️ So excited!

Hanhan99 · 25/06/2021 11:46

Ordered today! What did you decide OP?

Gas every time. How else do you chargill, flambé, use the flame to move heat around a wok, or not scratch an induction hob with a cast iron pan?

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 25/06/2021 12:09

@blairresignationjam the number of times I do those things - I use the gas bbq outside. Does a lovely char grilled steak, collapses an aubergine...

Not the wok though - my stirfying skills are more basic.

Paulina23 · 25/06/2021 13:01

Biggest draw back of induction is hot spots, the ring will never equally heat the pan even if you manage to match the size of the pan with the ring. You can go around this issue by heating a bit slower or use the more expensive table with full zone which will detect where the pan is and heat accordingly. That’s a real pain when trying to grill a large piece of meat where you end up with uneven done ness.

TheCrookedKind · 25/06/2021 13:59

Every time I've used induction in a self catering place or at my parents', I've hated it.

depends on the type/brand.

we have a Neff one and there are no rings, but 5 areas, which will heat on contact, even if pans are not centred - see photos, either way it will heat evenly!

You can buy silicon pads to avoid scratches.
Divineswirls · 25/06/2021 18:57

I hate gas. It looks a mess, pia to clean and makes me think of old people and rental properties

PeterPomegranate · 25/06/2021 19:42

Gas hob important for cooking Indian bread. But if that’s important to you it would probably already be on your list. Friend is jealous of my gas hob for that reason.

goingtotown · 25/06/2021 19:46

Professional cooks always seem to have gas hobs.
