Navy kitchen?

I've surprised myself by thinking this might be what I want....we need to decide on colours this morning. Anyone who chose a navy kitchen who is willing to share experiences, or even photos? We're going shaker style. My only concern is whether wall units will suck light out of the room. DH won't consider white wall units as a contrast. It's quite a large room, with south, west and ceiling windows. I'm thinking white surfaces and a wooden style floor. Until now we've been set on grey but I'm concerned that's a boring choice.

Lovely colour for a kitchen. My only advice would be navy for base cabinets / island and lighter colour for overhead cabinets. We once did a kitchen in a dark colour, whilst I loved the colour in hindsight I should have went lighter overhead as the colour completely dominated the room (and it was a big kitchen)

Like this, just google two tone kitchen navy and loads comes up.

I am having a new kitchen. Navy blue island. Cashmere base units and tall larder/ integrated appliance units.
Grey is done.

SantaMonicaPier · 19/06/2021 07:41

Thanks all. Love the white/pale wall units. The problem is DH dislikes them and I am a bit concerned it would look odd to have those between a navy fridge freezer housing and oven housing unit. We aren't having an island as the kitchen shape is a bit awkward due to the extension.

It looks lovely, but it is a very current trend so could end up looking dated quite soon. Think grey is a more long term option as it’s not a trend as such, is just a nice easy colour to live with.

Shelby10 · 19/06/2021 07:52

A family member has just had similar to this. Looks very timeless but not boring either. Sorry .. not blue but had to post as I love it.

Looks great now but will age quickly, a bit like red gloss splash backs and handle-less curved high gloss have.

I am also planning a new kitchen and was seduced by a dark blue kitchen in the showroom. When I bought a sample door home to look at it in situ it looked really dark. I think it might be OK in a huge room with high ceilings when there are no wall units, or just as an island. But not a whole kitchen with wall units.

We're currently doing our kitchen and this is exactly our thinking too. We've swung to sticking with neutral grey tones as we figure we can always add colour / stay on trend with accessories but I agree that in a couple of years navy is likely to be outdated. Depends on whether that bothers you at all OP, it might not!

I have a very dark navy kitchen with composite marble effect stone worktop from John Lewis of Hungerford. Can't find d a pic but I love it. Blue and white are classic colours that will never go out of style.

Shelby10:

A really lovely shade on the kitchen units. What colour is it as I know light can affect the colour? My monitor is showing it as a greenish grey.

CasperGutman · 19/06/2021 19:17

The extension we're having built at the moment will have a navy kitchen. We love the look of it and plan to live in the house until we're carried out in boxes, so we don't care if it looks a bit '2021' before it's replaced.

If we were worried about the kitchen looking dated, we'd reassure ourselves that it's decent quality painted solid wood, and could reasonably easily be repainted in a less datable colour if needed.

The only thing that would worry me would be if the room was a bit dark, but ours is big and bright with rooflights and big glass doors, and the kitchen will only be along one side.

Blossomtoes · 19/06/2021 19:25

We’re replacing the kitchen next year and we’re having navy base units with white wall units and a thunder blue Stoves range. Like a pp we’re staying here until we die so I really don’t care if it dates, it’s for us and I love it. As long as he gets his range the bloke doesn’t care what it’s like.

drpet49 · 19/06/2021 19:27

Age quickly? Says who? Forget about trends OP and just get what you like.

coco123456789 · 19/06/2021 19:56

My point was that it’s just a very of it’s time colour, like sage green was a few years ago and high gloss before that. But if you love it then it doesn’t matter!

Ankadan · 19/06/2021 22:53

We have a Cobham Blue island and Tern White wall units from DIY. I love it. We have lots of windows in the kitchen and chose Misty Sky from Dulux for the walls. It's a very blue kitchen but we were surprised by how much brighter the room looks as a result. Our previous kitchen was gloss white cabinets and sage green walls.
Our theory is that the blue walls reflect light and the green absorbed it so the overall effect is brighter even though we have the dark island.

A friend chose navy for her tall wall units and grey for the over head units next to it and it doesn't work at all. If you can't visually separate overhead units and base units, I suggest you go for all navy units and choose your other colours carefully.

WhoDidAndWhy · 19/06/2021 23:13

We have a navy island and navy cabinets all around the bottom but which for cabinets waist height and above. Gold handles. It’s a big kitchen with lots of light but the shade of blue changes depending on the time of dah and the light, which we love. Great decision for us and I don’t care if others don’t like it or it dates. I’ll worry about that then!

WhoDidAndWhy · 19/06/2021 23:13

White, not which

Katff · 20/06/2021 08:23

@SantaMonicaPier we’ve just had a navy shaker style kitchen put in and absolutely love it! We’ve got off-white walls and they really keep the room looking bright.

As others have said, it’s very “now”. Practically every kitchen you hear of is navy atm. I am regretting doing our laundry and boot room cupboards navy for this reason. I’ve also found it shows dust really badly.

Sage green and natural wood tones are coming through in all the design magazines and sites

BarbaraPapa · 20/06/2021 08:38

We've got a dark navy/brass fittings kitchen and it looks great, apart from two things that are now driving me insane:

  1. The paintwork shows ALL the fingerprints around the cupboard handles and I'm the only one who ever thinks to wipe it down.
  1. The dog likes to dry herself, post-shower/wet walk, by dragging her damp body along the units, so we now have a navy kitchen with a white stripe where the shit Farrow and Ball beautiful but impractical paint has worn off. Less dramatically, there are also chip marks that need touching up everywhere. When I get it repainted, it'll be in a similar colour but a more durable paint.
HasaDigaEebowai · 20/06/2021 08:42

We had the same chipping/wearing issue with the dcs bedrooms with navy walls. I used to go in there with a blue marker pen to try to touch them up but gave up ultimately. Dark painted colours are a nightmare for this since they generally have a white base coat and so the slightest scratch is very obvious

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 20/06/2021 09:36

Whilst navy kitchens seem like a trend, navy is a very classic colour, as is grey (and white, cream, sage green someone else posted). I don't think you can go far wrong really.
