@pigletjohn or anyone else who can help....plug problem

Yesterday, the plug got stuck in the plughole in the bathroom sink. My son tried to get it out and eventually succeeded in levering it out with a stick. Unfortunately, when it came out, the actual silver bit on the plug hole came out too.

So now i have a black hole where the silver grid should be if that makes sense. I can't get it to go back in place!

Do i need a plumber? Is there a trick i am missing?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

You should post a picture of the type of plughole it is

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 14:53

How would i do that?

Take a picture and add it to your post. Are you on an app or the mobile site? I'm on the mobile site and add pictures using a wee paperclip symbol

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 14:58

Will give it a go...thank you

What sort of plug was it? He must have given it some welly to detach the whole thing

Divineswirls · 13/06/2021 15:05

Just pop it back over the hole and google what glue or similar you can use to keep it in place

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 15:09

It was a metal plug.

Once he had pulled the whole bloody thing out, I had to use pliers to remove the plug from the silver.. socket thing. It was absolutely wedged. No idea what caused that.

There is a rubber seal that goes under it too

So it wasn't a pop up plug?
I have a wee sucker thing I have for removing light bulbs and use that when my pop up plug gets stuck

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 15:19

No just a bog standard plug on a chain

Can't you buy a whole new plughole and plug set. I had one for a kitchen sink, it wasn't expensive at all

Mooselaurels · 13/06/2021 17:53

Last time I fitted one of those it had a screw thread on the bottom and you did up a nut on the underneath to secure it in place - looks like this one is a bit less firmly secured!

You may just be able to stick it back in place. Is there any sign of adhesive on the back?

TrashPanda · 13/06/2021 18:16

Mine have a screw that goes through the central hole and into something in the pipe bit underneath. Like the one attached. Is there anything in the hole left that looks like the second picture.

Second picture didn't attach, sorry

as @TrashPanda says, there should be a screw, clamping the top part with the holes, to the part below the basin. The clamping action sqashes the rubber seal against the basin and prevents it leaking

I'm quite surprised your screw is missing.

The complete part is called the basin waste, and is a replaceable part, packeged with new seals, and instructions showing how to assemble and fit it.

ceramic bathroom sinks use one of two types, slotted or unslotted, depending where the overflow goes. It has a large screw fitting underneath that the nut on the trap screws on.

can you see one like yours?

I am now very fond of clacker wastes, but the rubber plug on a chain is the most reliable type.

Are you fond of plumbing?

put a bucket under it until fixed.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 19:02

My dh normally deals with all this kind of thing but he is ill in hospital. Typical for this to happen now.
There is nowhere to put a bucket. It looks like it is draining completely normally just without the silver bit.
Am i best getting a plumber do you think?
I can't see where a screw would go ...

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 19:07

I mean i can see that a screw would go through the central hole but i can't see where it would attach inside.
I'll go to b and q tomorrow and have a look. I'm not thick but i have no experience with plumbing. Is this a job I could do myself do you think?

I can see a black wheel type thing in the hole, does it have a hole in the middle or a screw head? The problem will be if the seal is lose then water could be escaping outside of the waste pipe. Is it a pedestal sink or boxed in?

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 21:22

It is a pedestal sink.
My friend's husband has very kindly taken over and is going to go the plumbers merchants tomorrow and sort it for me Blush

I can't see any water leaking anywhere

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 21:24

There is a screw inside the hole

I assume that screw is holding the pipe in place?

PigletJohn · 13/06/2021 21:58

@Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow

I assume that screw is holding the pipe in place?
not if there is no longer a grill on the upper side of the basin.

the screw clamps the upper and lower parts together, making a tight joint that seals against water leaks.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 22:31

But if there was a screw through the silver bit, where would it screw into if there is already a screw underneath?
