@pigletjohn or anyone else who can help....plug problem

Yesterday, the plug got stuck in the plughole in the bathroom sink. My son tried to get it out and eventually succeeded in levering it out with a stick. Unfortunately, when it came out, the actual silver bit on the plug hole came out too.

So now i have a black hole where the silver grid should be if that makes sense. I can't get it to go back in place!

Do i need a plumber? Is there a trick i am missing?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

I wonder if the screw has gone all the way through the hole in the top bit. Maybe it has a head that's too small to stay in the top bit

Either the screw head is too small and has gone through the middle of the silver bit. Or you actually have a black plug hole which someone has stuck a silver bit over the top of. If you unscrew the screw in the black bit, does that come off?

Friend's dh here fixing it. There was a screw. When ds levered the plug out, the screw went through the hole in the silver bit which was cracked and worn and so was just in the black bit. Mystery solved! He's putting in a new unit now. Thank god for good friends!
