Considering moving to Skegness

RLRapunzel · 12/06/2021 08:52

I've been thinking about relocating for quite awhile now. I had been sticking around for my family but none of them are interested in us/have any time for us anyway so that's not keeping me here anymore.

Does anyone have experience living in Skegness? House prices are ALOT lower there than here; we could never afford to own a home here but it's very possible there. What places are to be avoided? Are people friendly? Are the summer month's tourism influx a complete nightmare? There's lots of beautiful houses there and I'd love to live at the seaside but I've got a creeping 'too good to be true' feeling!

I don't live there, but grew up not a million miles away and had friends who did live there.

It's like any seasonal seaside town, rammed in summer season, dead in winter and wavering inbetween. But depends where you live - most people will be down towards the seafront / high street not in the residential streets although beware as to how many B&Bs are nearby. Traffic is also a major issue.

There is a train station that goes to Nottingham but the trains are slow, crap and also rammed in summer. It's a long drive to get anywhere inland.

Skegness has had quite a lot of investment over the past 10-15 years but I'm probably jaded by many childhood visits over the years that it wouldn't be somewhere I would personally choose!

Orf1abc · 12/06/2021 10:31

I have some lovely memories of Skegness but I'd never choose to live there. The transport links are poor (public and car), it's packed in the summer and dead in the winter. They also have a big drug problem, even in the nicer parts.

It can be friendly once you've established yourself as a 'local', but if you're anything other than white English you're unlikely to ever feel welcome.

Where do you live currently, and what is your housing budget? Will you need work in the area? There might be more appealing areas we can think of.

RLRapunzel · 12/06/2021 11:05

Dead in the winter and rammed in the summer I can live with. I don't use public transport I drive. Not a fan of the drug problem though.. and I am white English but I don't like the idea of living somewhere surrounded by people who are anti anything that isn't white English. With that said I'm trad goth so I don't think I'd fit in too much with the intolerant closed minded types. I knew it was too good to be true!

I'm in the Leicester, and we are looking for a 3 bedroom for £160k or less ideally. I'm happy to relocate anywhere in the UK tbh I just happened to found a house in Skegness within budget that I kinda fell in love with! Yes my husband will need to work in the area he is a chef. I work from home and my job can be done anywhere so location is irrelevant to my job.

Honestly I think Skeggy is quite grotty in reality after all the seaside tourists have gone home and wouldn't want to bring children up living round there (if you do have any children).

You can get plenty of lovely 3 beds anywhere in the Midlands for £160k, not sure about other parts of the country though.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/06/2021 11:13

For £160k they are many northern towns and cities you could choose they are far nice than Skegness.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/06/2021 11:14

*there

FairyAnn · 12/06/2021 11:16

We live on the Lincolnshire coast and Skegness gets an unfair reputation to be honest (as do most of the coastal towns round here) I moved here from the Midlands and I've found the people here very friendly.

Yes it can get very busy in summer, but there's also lots of quieter places to go, fantastic walks, local pubs, etc ..

Try one of the smaller villages around Skeg if you fancy something more rural

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/06/2021 11:20

There are much nicer seaside towns than Skegness. If you're a goth what about Whitby or Scarborough? Whitby might be a bit out of your budget but I think you'd find something in S'boro.

I live near Fleckney and there are a number of 2 beds with extension potential on sale here right now. I’d probably choose there as the house prices tend to be stableand you have access to some great schools. It’s also much better for family life than Skeggy is.
RLRapunzel · 12/06/2021 11:39

Yes I have 2 preschoolers Smile I'm definitely drawn up north and I like the idea of being near the sea or close enough to the sea to go regularly.

I'll take a look at whitby, Scarborough and some of the neighbouring villages around Skegness Smile

I’m about an hour from Skegness so pop there quite a bit in the winter, it’s so nice walking along the beach, we tend do go to Anderby Creek in the summer. The beach is really lovely, vast and Sandy and if you walk half a mile left or right of the clock tower even in the height of summer it is quite, people tend to stay around the pier.

I like it, it’s a typical seaside town they’ve spent a lot of money on smartening it up over lock-down and the Pier has recently been purchased by Mellors and they are investing heavily improving it.

FAQs · 12/06/2021 11:48

Also I’m from London so everyone seems really friendly as chatty in Skegness Grin

amusedtodeath1 · 12/06/2021 11:52

Have a look at Mablethorpe too. I've only ever visited. It's very close to skeggy, quieter and has a beautiful beach.

Orf1abc · 12/06/2021 12:06

Even with a car it's a pain going anywhere from Skeg. It's a world away from Leicester where you can get on the motorway and be on your way in a short time.

Your husband would find work for the summer season but may struggle in the winter. Also it's likely to be minimum wage.

Prices have risen so much recently, I'm not sure if that will change when things settle post pandemic. If you're in no hurry maybe plan a trip to the coast in November and get a feel for it out of season?

Orf1abc · 12/06/2021 12:09

Also the busy summer period might not bother you at first, but it will when you want to go somewhere on a Saturday and the roads are gridlocked. To give some perspective, nearly 10,000 people arrive and leave Butlins each week, so 20,000 in total. That's in addition to the guest houses, thousands of caravans etc. Skeg still does not have the infrastructure to cope with the numbers of visitors.

4PawsGood · 12/06/2021 12:14

It looks very deprived too

jumping in on this in particular.

Skegness isn't "anti anything that isn't white English" as a seaside town that relies on accepting money from tourists it can't afford to be.

I am hoping the the poster that said that you wouldn't feel comfortable if you weren't white meant that it is a predominantly white area. As is most of Lincolnshire.

Having said that, I still wouldn't move there. As it suffers from the same job issues that there are in any seasonal town.

Grin lmao thats hilarious!

I'm a nervous driver to I tend to avoid the motorway where I can and take the long way everywhere I go through country roads and villages instead Blush he's a head chef so he's on considerably more than min wage atm there's no way he would take a min wage job so that'll put a spanner in the works... he said that chefs are in low supply and high demand (where we are that is) because they were laid off during the lockdown and now placed are opening and wanting to employ them again but the chefs have found another job or are dubious about going back into it because of the risk of further shut downs and job losses so I assumed he would have no problem getting a job as that would be a country wide thing.. perhaps not!

You will have no worries about motorway driving in Lincolnshire as there is only one and its out of Grimsby.

Also think about education for your children, (if they are that age) as the schools are interesting and results pretty poor.

Ohhh that could quite well be what they meant and I misinterpreted that's probably my mistake.

What about the northwest coast? I’ve just looked on Rightmove and within 3 miles of Formby there 8 three bed properties under £160k and over 100 on The Wirral.

Your husband would have much better access to work as there are loads more large towns and cities within easy commute.

Dillan1234 · 29/09/2021 18:19

Can someone tell me what winthorpe allenby way is like I might be doing a house swap to there very soon I havnt decided I've heard mixed things bout skegness. I've got 4 young boys an need to move somewhere safe

EdgeOfTheSky · 29/09/2021 18:52

I would have thought a Head Chef needs a restaurant scene that is year round and not reliant in seasonal tourism. With a restaurant-going resident population.

A lot of seaside places suffer rural and coastal deprivation and can be economically bleak out of season.

@Dillan1234 best to start your own thread with the specific place name in the title. Everyone who sees thread will answer the OP, as I did.
