Wasp nests in garage

I'm pretty sure that I've just found wasp nests in our garage!
I rent
The landlord will sort this won't they???

Can you shut the garage door ok?

You can easily get rid of it yourself if it's just hanging from the roof and you can see it. Get a can of cheap fly spray and just spray in the garage. Close the doors and wait an hour or so. Repeat a few times if needed. Once the activity has died down spray a good load directly on the nest.

Done this myself a number of times; never fails.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2021 12:41

Oh Right ok so I just need some fly spray?

OP posts:
TobyHouseMan · 31/05/2021 13:06

Yup - if you get enough near the wasps they'll all be gone in 20 mins.

ohsuzannah · 31/05/2021 13:12

How big is the nest?

purpleme12 · 31/05/2021 13:14

There seem to be about 4
But I don't think they're very big? Not that I've seen a lot of wasp nests in person I'm just going by what it looks like they can get to on Google images that's all

4 large nests (honeycomb style on a stalk) or little individual cement ones. For cement ones we just hack them off the surface and tread on the pupae. For the large honeycomb ones we wait until night when they are asleep, spray the shit out of it and run like fuck. Repeat for 3 nights. Every day there will be many dead wasps on the ground. Then remove the empty/dead nest.

PresentingPercy · 31/05/2021 17:06

We just get the pest guy in. £60. All done. Do not let it grow or you really will not be able to go into the garage. I think it really your issue as its not the fabric of the house. It is a nasty addition to it.

Watto1 · 31/05/2021 17:08

When my tenant had a wasp nest in her shed, I organised and paid for a pest controller to go out. About £70 if I remember correctly.

Watto1 · 31/05/2021 17:10

And yes to them growing quickly. The nest was the size of a tennis ball. The pest guy said that if it had been left another week, it would have been the size of a football!

Thatusernamewastaken · 31/05/2021 18:00

This is something your landlord should sort. I wouldn’t trouble myself in trying to deal with it.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2021 18:38

Oh bloody hell I'm worried now after these comments
I hadn't envisaged it getting worse!

Castlepeak · 31/05/2021 19:10

They can get much bigger fast.

If they are tiny and you are not allergic, you can hit them with some wasp spray and then knock them down.

We once got to watch one about the size of a football attached to the second story of our neighbors house be dealt with from the safety of our closed bedroom window. It was two men in full safety gear with professional equipment. The swarm was huge. Don’t let them get that big. If they are bigger than a handful of cells and you aren’t comfortable dealing with them, call your landlord ASAP. It will be much cheaper and easier for the landlord to address the problem early.

murbblurb · 31/05/2021 19:30

' Run like fuck' is extremely good advice after spraying a wasp nest. They will move on eventually and won't be back, but you've got quite a wait before that happens.

Get on to the landlord tomorrow. Whoever deals with this, it needs doing quickly.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2021 19:43

I sprayed some fly/wasp killer in there earlier then went out like a previous poster said. There were some dead ones on the floor when I looked a few hours later....

OP posts:
PresentingPercy · 31/05/2021 21:22

If you haven’t killed the Queen wasp it won’t do any good spraying. Knock the nest off the wall and run.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2021 21:28

I'm sorry I'm just not brave enough to do that

OP posts:
PresentingPercy · 31/05/2021 22:12

If it’s golf ball sized or even tennis ball sized you can do it. Any bigger just no. It will grow and the Queen attracts more and more wasps. They will literally be everywhere.

Arbadacarba · 31/05/2021 22:17

An abandoned wasps' nest won't be returned to, and other wasps won't nest near it. We had one in our roof cladding a couple of years ago and just left it - the wasps were all gone by October and we've never had others. Obviously that's not an option if it's in a place where the wasps are likely to bother you - but it's worth leaving the nest in situ if the actual wasps are dead, for that reason.

gamerchick · 31/05/2021 22:19

Get a dude in man while it's still manageable. Don't wait until it becomes a mega pain in the behind.

I was going to say this. Any wasp nest only lasts for one summer and then the new queens leave to hibernate elsewhere before starting new nests and all the rest of the wasps die. They won't come back to the same place.

If it's safe to wait it out, I would. Otherwise get pest control. Don't go fucking about knocking it down when you don't have a clue what you're doing.

Above explains when/how it's safe to DIY.

Medievalist · 31/05/2021 22:39

Just get someone to hold a bin bag open underneath it while you use a spade or something to knock the nest into the bag. Tie the bag and put it in the freezer to kill the wasps. Do it on a night when wasps are drowsy. Worked well for us.

SpringSparrow · 31/05/2021 22:45

If you go for getting a professional in to remove them, I would suggest asking on your local community Facebook page. I’ve had to have our local wasp man out twice in different years and in different areas! Local man charged £50, Rentolkill quote is £293!!!!

Hyacinth88 · 31/05/2021 22:48

This. Happened to me last week.
No landlord though so had to sort it myself.
Gloves on carrier bad over it and pulled it off. Bad sealed and into the bin

Chumleymouse · 31/05/2021 22:50

Just get someone with full motorbike leathers on ( they can’t sting through leather) wrap up well around the neck, then just go in knock in down, bring it outside and stamp on it . Job done , after an hour or 2 the rest of them will have gone to find a new nest .
