Should I complain about my bathroom fitting?

I've paid £1500 to have a new bath, shower screen and sink fitted. A new shower hose and pvc cladding fitted on the walls.

I know that's a cheaper price. But the finish isn't great. There's a bit of silicone that wasn't smoothed out, some of the silicone is on the cladding and alot of the cladding is jagged.

I haven't paid the final bill yet. I was thinking of asking the fitter to come back and put some bits right. Am I expecting too much?

TBH with cladding I don't think you ever get a good finish but they can neaten it up, is he approachable?

motheroreily · 25/05/2021 08:10

Yes. He seemed approachable when he was here. I think if it was neater and more consistent it would be OK. It's just a bit messy.

That is very cheap, but the finish isn't great at all. I've recently had a new shower fitted, wall panels put up, the bath boxed in and a new side fitted, as well as new taps, costing me 1900 in the NW. The finish has been superb, however they did damage my walls when bringing the panels up. Sad swings in roundabouts I guess.

Grohlsguitar · 25/05/2021 08:15

I would not be happy with that either. When I had a new bathroom put in there was a snagging meeting a week later to discuss any issues, and they were rectified in a few days. I'd be asking the fitter to tidy those things up if it was my bathroom.

TheQueef · 25/05/2021 08:43

If you feel comfortable ask him to tidy the finish up, he can use masking tape for the silicon. Maybe a run of wooden architect along the top of the cladding would be better than trying to seal straight.

I would certainly ask.

andivfmakes3 · 25/05/2021 08:45

Sorry that's absolutely awful! I wouldn't pay for that at all! The cladding looks like it's been hacked at to cut it abs the mastic - well - it's just shit sorry. I wouldn't pay a penny for the work

goingtotown · 25/05/2021 08:48

Of course you should complain, it’s a mess.

LizzieSiddal · 25/05/2021 08:48

It doesn’t matter if it was at the cheap end, he should not leave a job like that. I would politely tell him there are a few things that need tidying up, and say when he’s done them you will pay the rest of his bill.

Andthenanothercupoftea · 25/05/2021 08:50

Ask him to rectify rather than complain. Save the complaining for is he refuses. You're also in a good position having not paid the final bill. Don't pay until you are happy with the work.

TheQueef · 25/05/2021 08:51

Not architect?!? (Wasn't even autocucumber) I mean beading, quadrant.
It looks like he has cut the panels with the wrong saw, are they pattern match? I don't understand why he would use the cut edge in eye line instead of cut edge to ceiling?

motheroreily · 25/05/2021 08:54

Thank you for your replies. It's really helpful to get some perspective. I won't complain but will ask if he can tidy it up. I know it was a cheap price so wasn't expecting luxury but think the silicone and cutting should at least be neat. I think he might have rushed it a bit. As he said it would be 2 to 3 days but ended up being 4.

My oh is an untrained, unskilled DIYer and he would do better than that

motheroreily · 25/05/2021 09:16

Thank you. Yes the more I think about it. The more I think I should ask him to come back. Here are another couple of things I've noticed too.

That’s rougher than a badgers arse !!!!!
It could all be put right with a trim or 2 and some neat silicone beads , but I fear he is not the man for the job . It’s the little finishing touches that take a lot of time

Chumleymouse · 25/05/2021 09:41

And 1500 quid is not cheap for 4 days labour

GillianAnderson · 25/05/2021 09:44

Yes, raise your points. I did recently when I had some damage repaired on my car. I'd be kicking myself forever more if I hadn't have done

A lot of people just see what they can get away with

goingtotown · 25/05/2021 09:44

Send him the pictures.

CellophaneFlower · 25/05/2021 09:54

That is really bad. It makes no difference how cheap he was (doesn't even sound cheap to me) as he shouldn't be agreeing to do work which he clearly cannot do. It beggars belief that he even gets any work at all... certainly not through word of mouth anyway!

Personally I'd refuse to pay his final bill and put that money towards paying someone else to finish it properly. There's no way he just rushed that... he clearly doesn't know what he's doing or takes no pride in his work.

ChequerBoard · 25/05/2021 11:50

Honestly, that is awful. The panels aren't sealed and won't be watertight. Being that it's a bathroom, even if they aren't directly getting wet in a bath or shower area, they will get condensated and you really don't want water dripping behind the gaps that are really evident in your photos.

£1500 is not cheap for that shoddy work at all. For contrast I have recently had a full shower room fitted (new shower, tray and enclosure, new sink vanity, unit WC, towel radiator and large mirrored cabinet fitted) with much moving of pipe work to make everything fit cleanly for £4K and took approx 2 weeks including time for electrician, tiler & floorer to do their jobs (paid for separately).

TheQueef · 25/05/2021 14:04

Hope you've got a reasonable response O'Reilly
I think Chumly is right it only needs trim and seal so it isn't a lost cause.

Somanysocks · 25/05/2021 15:30

Bodgit and Scarper, he can't possibly think that's ok.

Chumleymouse · 25/05/2021 15:48

I was always taught, if you make a poor job of something your only letting one person down, yourself !

It looks like he’s cut the panels with a pair of shears??
Please let’s hope his plumbing is better than his finishing, that’s amateur diy at best.

motheroreily · 25/05/2021 18:08

Thank you for you all your advice. I've sent him the photos.
The cost was £1,500 which included the bath, sink, shower screen, shower hose and cladding. I paid £800 up front which was to cover the materials.
Will wait to see what he says

Chumleymouse · 25/05/2021 19:25

That’s still 175 a day, for a below average job

Oblomov21 · 25/05/2021 19:34

Christ almighty, this is horrific. Sorry Op. hope you get it sorted.
