Sofa bed recommendation

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 07:51

Morning all, I’m looking for a sofa bed for the spare room. Swapping it from a bed so that my teens have somewhere to hang out and watch tv. Any recommendations? Budget is max £600 and it needs to be comfortable enough to sleep on for a week and not too low that my parents can’t get on it properly.

I like the click clack style but are they comfy?

Also because of low ceiling, can’t have a back that is too high and it needs to go up a twisty staircase 😬

Thanks

I have IKEA ektorp, which I’ve found v good. It can be assembled in place (comes in boxes), & mine recently had arms off to move

Doublevodka · 20/05/2021 08:27

Do check the measurements for the click clack style. We have one, it's supposed to be a double. It's definitely not a double and I think a lot of them are like this. I really wish I'd gone for a pull out style now as that would fit 2 people comfortably.

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 08:29

Thanks. It seems to be a sofa only option on their website

@Doublevodka ah ok that’s good to know. Are they comfortable? I can imagine the dip in the middle might be quite uncomfortable?

Ikea Lycksele - it might not be much of a looker, but by god they are comfortable to both sleep on and sit on if you like something firm. We had one as our bed for many years when we lived in a houseshare, and we've always had one since in our spare room. All out guests (up to their late 60's) find it really comfortable.

All comes apart as well so no issues getting up twisty stairs etc.

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 09:20

Actually my aunt has one of these and it is really comfortable, especially as she puts a topper on it. But I don’t think it would be that comfy as a sofa...? as in to snuggle down to watch a film 🤔. I like the price though!

Hi Chimpd0g, it's fairly comfortable, but i imagine a pull out bed is probably more comfortable, as that has an actual mattress.

Doublevodka · 20/05/2021 10:55

Also, yes there is a dip in the middle!

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 11:02

I’m wondering if a click clack with a topper might work best 🤔
Now looking at IKEA friheten (L shaped) but reviews of it coming apart are putting me off

I've been on the sofa bed hunt for a long time. Some sofa beds are 132cm wide which is just too small for our guests. A lot of the click clack style are. The pull puts are mostly 140cm wide which is a double.

We've actually restricted ourselves to ones that pull out to a king size bed and honestly it's hard. They are mostly ugly and expensive. We've finally settled on a Made To Last one but is £1400. It has a thick sprung king size mattress which is the only thing that will do for my in laws... (One night per year Hmm) The other option we considered was Cocoon.

We had an ikea Friheten and whilst it was clever and compact and looked nice, it was pretty solid to sit and sleep on.

Would you consider a 2nd hand one? A lot of them are in excellent condition as they have been in spare rooms and used a handful of times. I've been keeping an eye on our local pages just in case but nothing right has come up.

NotReallyFeelingIt · 20/05/2021 11:05

The Friheten didn't come apart and it is still going strong in my brother's holiday home but we were happy to give it away to him for free which is our ringing endorsement...

minipie · 20/05/2021 11:11

@NotReallyFeelingIt I’ve been looking at the Made to Last sofabeds too. Which style have you gone for and is it comfy?

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 11:12

Thanks @NotReallyFeelingIt that’s helpful. Annoying about the friheten though!!

Not keen on the idea of a second hand one to be honest, just because it’s a bed, although it’s true that it’s something not slept on often 🤔

Just had a look at madetolast - they do look good, but I loathed to pay that much for something the kids are going to eat popcorn and pizza on!

We haven't ordered it yet as I'm waiting for the fabric samples to arrive. None of the fabrics or styles look particularly appealing and they are just tiny pictures but I'll wait to see what they look like in the flesh. Probably some sort of dark grey. Unexciting but practical and hopefully hard-wearing.

Think we'll go Bromswold www.made-to-last.co.uk/bromswold-4-seater-kingsize-sofabed-133606.html

There are only a few 4 seaters (making king size) to choose from.

I am a little worried as we bought a sofa online once before and it was never comfortable - we ended up selling it.

I know what you mean OP about it being slept on and then I remembered how many hotels and holiday houses I've stayed in... Grin

WellTidy · 20/05/2021 12:05

We had one for years that was really comfortable to sit on and to sleep on. The holy grail! But it isn’t made anymore (we bought ours in about 2004). It was a Relyon. Mentioning it in case you are willing to consider second hand. That said, I couldn’t even give mine away for free last month and we ended up taking it to the tip. Such a waste of a really good condition sofa bed.

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 12:33

Very good point about hotel beds & lettings! Might have a look on eBay 😷

We had a sofa bed from Innovation living and it was incredibly comfy. They have a fabulous range and choice of fabrics/colours, too. Not cheap, but worth the money.

SollaSollew · 20/05/2021 13:16

If you're looking at ikea have you thought about their Hemnes day bed? My dd had one for ages and they pull out to make double beds using proper mattresses and slats. Plus they have drawers underneath where you can store spare bedding.

I am yet to find a good sofabed though so my opinion might be a bit biased. We currently have one from made.com that you're supposed to be able to sleep on every night with a memory foam mattress but you still need a topper for more than one night and it was about £1400!!

Chimpd0g · 20/05/2021 14:12

@MadameOvary81 they look really nice but a bit over budget for us I think, unfortunately.

@SollaSollew yes that’s been recommended elsewhere but it just doesn’t seem very comfortable to lounge on

We have one from SofaSofa which is in your price range. The bed is fine (though would not want to sleep on it every night) and the sofa is very comfy and has lasted well.

I'm thinking of getting a sofa bed for DD's room. It fits a small double but not much else. She's with me 4 nights out of 7 so
It would need to be comfy

Tangledtresses · 20/05/2021 16:11

I bought a sofa sofa one it's good quality and had removable washable covers too
The mattress is a bit thin but fine for one night or two
I put a mattress topper on it for extra comfort
