If like me you have a phobia of spiders I've been.looking for a way to get rid of them without having to kill them. It always makes me feel guilty lol. I found a great product on amazon that's all natural called EcoWidow spider repellent, I've tried few some work better than others but this one seem to give best results. If you have any other tips I'd love to hear your experiences.Smile

I was going to say peppermint oil but I see that spray has it in.

I’ve heard placing conkers around window sills and doors acts as a repellent but I’ve not tried them.

APeakyBlinder · 16/05/2021 18:14

I tried conkers, thought they were working until I saw a spider happily sat on one Hmm

KFleming · 16/05/2021 18:18

I’ve read that the spindly ones (cellar spiders?) kill the big black hairy house spiders. I don’t mind the spindly ones as much, so I leave them if I see one up in the corner of a room in the hope that it kill any worse ones.

youllneverknow · 17/05/2021 13:52

If you can cope with them, leave the cellar spiders. I was plagued by huge house spiders in my last house and then I read that cellar spiders kill them. Once I started to leave them I noticed a massive reduction in the number of house spiders I got. I tell everyone this now!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 17/05/2021 16:02

The only ways that conkers can work are

a) sticking pipe cleaner legs and googly eyes on them so they look like giant spiders - make sure you don't catch them in your peripheral vision, though, as your instinctual reaction will be the same as when slicing tomatoes and you see the tops on the side of the board dont ask how DP knows this , and

b) throwing them at the spiders.

lydia2021 · 17/05/2021 16:18

I have a plug in repellant thing. Repels rats mice spiders etc by a sound they can hear , which I cant hear.

lightand · 17/05/2021 16:51

I just use a spider catcher that has a long handle, grasps them without killing them, and put them outside.
Only a few seem to find their way in again, once they are out.

Get a cat.
Mine used to eat the spiders.

You're supposed to pierce them I think.

jaundicedoutlook · 17/05/2021 17:51

Our cat eats spiders, however, he isn’t that good at getting the ones on the ceiling! Just vac them up with a handheld and expel them into the garden.

We've not seen a big hairy one since we let the spindly ones stay. Might be coincidence, but it's fine by me!

Conkers and a fully charged Dyson.

OldTinHat · 17/05/2021 18:21

I have a completely irrational fear of spiders and after reading here last autumn about leaving cellar spiders, I pulled on my big girl pants and left them be. I had about a dozen giant house spiders, had none the year before when I was getting rid of the cellar spiders. I wish I could wrap my house up in cellophane so they can get in!

Nooooo don’t say that! I pin my hopes on cellar spiders and it seemed to work last year!

Maybe you had some vegetarian cellar spiders. Or just lazy ones.

pipsqueakbollock · 17/05/2021 19:28

How the fuck does a skinny spider catch, web and eat a huge hairy fat spider? There cannot be any logic to this surely???!

I grew up in a draughty house with open drain pipes - it was full of fucking house spiders. Hence I'm terrified of them.

I have only ever lived in a purpose built flat and houses with closed pipes (they feed into the soil stack) and apart from one giant spider in the kitchen sink (open drain!!!!) I don't get them.

I scour every hole and crack (such as the tv cable hole) and I fill them with mastic.

I want to know if it is true that the small brown spots on the window frames is spider poo?

NoWordForFluffy · 17/05/2021 20:00
@pipsqueakbollock (don't watch if you don't like spiders!).
gamerchick · 17/05/2021 20:30

They're proper mint aren't they? Grin I bring them home in Tupperware when I find one. They're fab pest control.

As long as they stay out the way of the cat.

pipsqueakbollock · 17/05/2021 22:43

@NoWordForFluffy not a chance I'm watching that !

There are no skinny spiders in my house either save very rarely in the bathroom.

On a more useful note, I do spray the front door, garage door, loft hatch and around the open drain with Deathlac spray every three months.

Makes me feel better

LopsidedWombat · 18/05/2021 01:52

For the person recommending a cat... I have seen mine wearing spiders like a face hugger on multiple occasions, absolutely useless!

I had no idea the spindly ones ate the large ones, I will never remove one of those again. How does that even work, there's nothing to them and some of those house spiders have knees and everything?!

LopsidedWombat · 18/05/2021 01:55

...I see someone has posted a video that answers my question. The bigger spider didn't even seem to try!

Triphazard101 · 18/05/2021 19:27

Our cats are useless at getting rid of spiders and mice!! They bring in mice Angry and then lose interest!
Lazy buggers.
I try to put up with the spindly ones in the hope that they'll get rid of the terrifying ones.i had a shower this morning, wrapped myself in a towel and sat for a few min reading MN on my phone. Then I glanced and saw a spider in the towel. I immediately jumped up and obviously dropped the towel and ran out of the room. I hope that neither of my neighbours were in their garden and got a view of me leaping up and dropping the towel!!😂😂
