Kitchen island overhang help?

Hello

We are online planning a kitchen with DIY kitchens at the moment and I'm unsure of how much overhang we can have for seats/stools to go under without it needing to be supported with legs? Does it depend on the thickness of the worktop?

I've attached an image showing what we are hoping for, sorry it's not great I know. On one side we'd like our sink in the middle, unit below, dishwasher to one side and another unit of some sort to the other. The rest I'm not sure, just that really if we can get away with it. I've put the length as 2.5m as I think that would fit four seats along one length comfortably.

Thank you!

I’m also ordering a worktop from DIY kitchens and have been told max 250cm overhang with 20mm quartz. Not sure about 30mm.

car1sberg · 16/05/2021 17:31

@newyorky09 do you mean 25cm?

Did they say this can be on more than one side too?

Thanks!

Sorry yes 25cm! They didn’t say about if it can be more than one side sorry. If you live near one of the suppliers you can go and view the slabs and get advice too.

We have a square (ish) island with cupboards and drawers underneath. There is an an overhang on two adjacent sides with room for 4 bar stools in total. Just measured it and one overhang is 28cm and the other is 35. Not sure what the worktop is made of but it's not granite or anything fancy.

car1sberg · 16/05/2021 18:45

@newyorky09 oh that sounds interesting. Would you possibly mind sending me a photo of yours? I'd love to see.
Is it a laminate worktop?

This is exactly what I'm looking for.. though the overhang doesn't seem very deep to eat at the table easily? Hmm..

200-300mm is the usual advice, but I'd go for 300-350mm if you want to eat full meals comfortably.

BertyFlanter · 16/05/2021 19:27

I just used diy kitchens and had quartz worktops. I went for thicker to allow for a bigger overhang which is 300mm on a 2000mm island. I went with 30mm thick and it looks lovely. We have 4 stools comfortably and the depth is perfect.

The company that works with DIY sent a really professional rep to measure up who explained everything. I'd highly recommend them 🙂

car1sberg · 16/05/2021 19:41

@BertyFlanter oooh please send a photo or two of your island?

@BertyFlanter can I also be really rude and ask how much your quartz worktop was? Did it come as a 3m piece and therefore you needed to pay for that much despite using less?

I actually think maybe having the four stools along the back and two at just one end rather than one at each end might be better.. to make more of a seating 'corner' but how wide would it need to be then.. argh!

I don't know anyone who eats more than breakfast or a snack on an island. I find them uncomfortable to eat a regular meal there.
As for your units - a pull out rubbish bin would be useful there.

BertyFlanter · 16/05/2021 20:15

I had the island 900x2000, a 1200 x 600 a 1400 x 600 and a small windowsill. All 30mm thick in white mirror. Can't remember exactly but I know it was under 2k including template and fitting.

Daisydoesnt · 16/05/2021 20:29

Just to say at our island we didn’t have legs to support just little brackets. We had them added later because we were always worried about people leaning on the overhang (I mean when sat down, resting their elbows). Or people always seem to put things on the end and it’s a lot of weight to be unsupported. Like a toddler once!! 😳 The brackets never got in the way. You can just about see one in this photo.

Just had our kitchen put in (DIY Kitchens) we have Corian. 25 cm overhang. On the island we have a sink, pull out bin, dishwasher, towel storage pullout and a cupboard.

@BertyFlanter that's cheaper than I thought, for 30mm too. I was thinking we may need to source the worktop elsewhere to lower cost but that's pretty good. Did you compare prices?

OP posts:
car1sberg · 16/05/2021 20:45

@Catnuzzle gorgeous!! Great to see how a 25cm overhang looks in real life, thank you!

@Daisydoesnt those brackets look lovely, also love your stools. And the AGA... gorgeous!!

@Livingintheclouds argh don't say that.. I'm wanting to put seats at the island so we don't also need a dining table, in an attempt to save space. I really don't want a separate table in front of the patio doors as we have that now and the kids are always touching the glass with their dirty hands whilst at the table!

So this would be the only seating in the kitchen/family room Confused I had thought about getting a dining table that sticks out from the island to the side of it but it would end up being so long. Or just a long extension of worktop and legs at the end. I thought more of a chunky rectangle shaped island may be better than a really long thin one..

Oh god the pressure!

@Daisydoesnt your kitchen is so, so gorgeous. I have a cream Aga too, but not in quite such glorious surroundings Shock

I am going through this at the moment.

Ikea quartz max unsupported overhang = 250mm
Elsewhere seems to generally be around 300mm (even for 20mm).

Ikea wanted a sea of supporting legs for anything larger. Other companies may only require a supporting leg under the cantilever bit (we will have drawers at the far side).

We need an overhang of 390mm because of the drawers I want to put in, so we've decided to build a supporting frame underneath about 90mm away from the main units to ensure it's supported (then we'll attach cover panels directly to the frame and extend the side cover panel).

I wouldn't take any risks with quartz or granite as you'll null n void the warranty and if it cracked the cost to replace would be painful.

If you are thinking laminate or wood then personally I wouldn't worry as much, 1. Much lighter and 2. Much easier/cheaper to replace if push came to shove (unlikely).

If it helps, I did sit at an ikea 250mm overhang and hand no issue with lack of space for my legs. I am very averaged size.

Roodicus21 · 17/05/2021 09:25

We had an overhang of 30cm. I wouldn't go less than that. My tall and big dh would struggle to get his knees in anything shorter than that.

thelegohooverer · 17/05/2021 11:55

I think the comfort level comes down to the seats. My bil has big padded barstools that we have comfortably lounged in all evening. Perching on a tiny barstool with no back support for every meal would be a misery. I don’t think you need a table as long as you choose the seating accordingly.

BertyFlanter · 17/05/2021 11:56

I did compare prices OP, I found that some places were cheaper on the install and template but more expensive for materials and the opposite with DIY kitchens. That worked out better for me. Defo worth shopping around depending on your circumstances but for me DIY was a no brainier.
I also did another kitchen with them for a customer and they were delighted too. Had the same worktop as me and it all went smoothly.

car1sberg · 17/05/2021 12:13

@BertyFlanter sorry for sounding silly but I'm new to all this, we've never done our own kitchen.. how do you get a template done when you're buying from somewhere like DIY kitchens, when they don't come our first?
