Kitchen island overhang help?

Hello

We are online planning a kitchen with DIY kitchens at the moment and I'm unsure of how much overhang we can have for seats/stools to go under without it needing to be supported with legs? Does it depend on the thickness of the worktop?

I've attached an image showing what we are hoping for, sorry it's not great I know. On one side we'd like our sink in the middle, unit below, dishwasher to one side and another unit of some sort to the other. The rest I'm not sure, just that really if we can get away with it. I've put the length as 2.5m as I think that would fit four seats along one length comfortably.

Thank you!

@thelegohooverer yes absolutely. We have small children too so definitely getting more 'chair' like stools with backs and sides.

Which leads me on to my next question, those of you with island seating, what height are the seats? I didn't even know you can get bar height or counter height which is shorter, and I presume the latter is what we'd need?

Thanks!

@Roodicus21 great; noted, thank you. We're both pretty tall so going to need 30cm overhang then..

Going through this at the moment and it's been causing me no end of stress! Had to go back to DIY and change some of our units as we'd originally put in a 45cm overhang and no-one had warned us it'd be an issue.

30cm with 30mm granite is generally accepted as fine. I spoke to someone at Natural Stone Surfaces who do DIY's installation and they said they'd only recommend up to 25cm with lighter coloured granites but I could either install braces like www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254595188327 or they'd install it and I'd have to sign a disclaimer.

I then spoke to another fitter who said they'd do 32cm no problem and another who'd only do 20cm!

I posted the following thread on Pistonheads and got some good advice including from a fabricator, most of whom said 30cm would be absolutely fine so we're going with the ones who said they could do 32cm.

@Ecthelion great, thank you! I think we're going to go for 30cm overhang, and had thought about 20mm quartz but maybe we need 30mm.. the cost though...!

Has anybody had solid laminate worktops? I didn't even know what they were until I walked past Wickes and looked in briefly and was told about them.

My husband really doesn't want to get a laminate worktop, he's set on quartz but I just worry we won't stick to our budget at all..

We had solid laminate, and it was fine. We got ours from worktop express as the kitchen company couldn't get the size we wanted. Also make sure you measure the height of your island as we ordered bar stools from made.com without measuring the height properly and had to send them back as we couldn't get our knees under them!

We're just having this conversation too. Basically it boils down to worktop composition. Laminate worktops can have a biggest overhang - up to 45cms. Granite, quartz etc is up to 30cm and corian is up to 30, but can be more if you get a reinforced though this is costly.

Whichever company you get to do your worktops, you first pay for the worktop from the measurements you give off the plans. Then when all the units are installed they come round and do a laser template so it fits exactly in the space. Most kitchens don't end up being 100% true and you don't want gaps anywhere. Adjustments are made to the final bill once the template is done. I upgraded to the 30mm at that point and added on the windowsill and only had to pay about 150 more.
You'll also need all taps sinks and jobs etc on site so that they can take measurements and cut the holes out exactly.

Diy charge around 550 for this part (measure and install) of it but the worktop is cheaper. Another company only charged 80 for the measure but the worktops were more expensive.
