Peninsula or island- help us decide

Room is roughly 6.5m X 5.5m and will be split in to kitchen and living area. We already have separate lounge, dining and play rooms.

See attached images. On the other side of the island/ peninsula is roughly 3.2m X 5.5m of space.

Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks

Possibly a better image of the island layout

For that space I would probably choose the island, but I wouldn’t put the hob on it.

Read the thread title and thought for a second I was in the baby names section.

Why not? I definitely don't want the sink on the island as I know we'll pile dishes up on it.

I'd probably be going for the peninsula to get proper space definition. I also seem to be the only person I know that is worried about islands being so popular at the moment that they will surely date the kitchen.

😂

OP I'm struggling to work out from your first pictures where you're thinking for a peninsula, but I think the island looks awkward in your second post. I'd probably do a peninsula like this to create a sort of U-shape kitchen to optimise storage/countertop space

Yes, where you've put it is where it's be.

Peninsula for me, makes a much better use of space in my opinion

CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove · 03/05/2021 14:28

Definitely peninsula then for that space. If you want the seating you do a breakfast bar overhang and a couple benches

Allthereindeersaregirls · 03/05/2021 14:31

Yes, the peninsula will have a breakfast bar over hang. It'll be 120cm wide- 60depth units on the kitchen side, 30cm depth units lounge side plus overhang

@Allthereindeersaregirls I like an island to be a nice clear multipurpose space. I don’t like sink/hob island layouts, but I love a big island that people can get round and chop/prep together.

Ah, fair enough. I spend much longer at the stove than I do prepping/ chopping on the whole so think that'll work better for us. I don't want to have my back to the room at either the sink or the hob.

I have an an island with nothing on and it just doesn’t get used at all, I do all my prep beside the hob so that I can pop the stuff straight into a pan. My new house will either have the hob on an island or just not bother with an island at all.

Yes, I think this would happen with ours. Or it'd become a dumping ground.

I want peninsula, DH wants island.

I think the peninsula looks better and is a more effective use of space but DH thinks the kitchen will be more usable with an island and we'll get in each others way less. Personally, I've never been in a kitchen where you aren't exactly where the other person wants to me, regardless of the size.

Haha my husband and I are always wanting to be in the same place. It’s obviously his fault, he always decides to empty the dishwasher while I’m cooking - idiot

Londongent · 04/05/2021 08:25

I think the peninsula defines the space better, buy I'm not a fan of islands, they always seem to be in the way

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/05/2021 08:32

I think an island allows better flow around the space, plus corner cupboards are a pita, so the less of them the better imo.

Roodicus21 · 04/05/2021 09:15

I prefer an island and had similar space in my last house. We had the induction hob in the island (2.5mx 1m) and I loved it. We now have sink in island and i don't like it, but it was here when we moved it.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 04/05/2021 09:21

Peninsula, but I have an irrational hatred of islands.

thelegohooverer · 04/05/2021 09:24

Island has better flow, and every side of it can be used, so it’s kind of like a moveable workspace. You can keep out of each other’s way, just be stepping round the corner when chopping etc.

But, you have to make decisions about whether to group the sink/dishwasher/bin (dishes zone) or hob/sink/bin/prep area (prep zone). A peninsula can create a better workflow imo.

It very much depends on how you use your kitchen and who does what & where.

parietal · 04/05/2021 09:30

do you have a dining room somewhere else? do you plan to use the seating at the island to actually eat meals, or is it just for being sociable?

I think peninsula, but make sure it is a deep worksurface (90cm not 60) to have enough space for everything.

Gassylady · 04/05/2021 09:30

Peninsula every time for me. We have hob on an island it’s a big flat surface that everyone just dumps stuff on. Prime factor in a kitchen should be usability surely. Kitchen came with the house but I’m busy saving to change it to something that will work better for us

Chewbecca · 04/05/2021 09:36

I think I would like more kitchen altogether than you have. It’s a big space but not an awful lot of worktop or cupboard space.

It does depend on the rest of the house - is this room in addition to a living room and a dining room? If yes, I would extend the kitchen area into more of the room.

Chewbecca · 04/05/2021 09:39

Sorry, you answered my question in the OP.

More kitchen units please! I would try out units all down the left side and an island in front of those.
