Peninsula or island- help us decide

Room is roughly 6.5m X 5.5m and will be split in to kitchen and living area. We already have separate lounge, dining and play rooms.

See attached images. On the other side of the island/ peninsula is roughly 3.2m X 5.5m of space.

Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks

I am verging towards the peninsular as I think the layout looks nicer and more easy to be in. However for full disclosure I've just had a peninsular fitted in our kitchen and I like it more than our old island.

However my only question is how far apart would your runs of units be? Ours are 1.5 m and I think they're actually a bit too far apart for it to be optimal for cooking as I prep at the peninsular and the range is behind so am often stepping across. If your prep space and hob are next to each other I think you'd be ok.

Peninsula..much more useful....went through this loop a lot :) when planning kitchen...went for Peninsula in the end so glad... works really well practically...

@SollaSollew totally agree, my peninsula/Island is about 1.6 away from the rest and I think that’s why it feels a bit useless

Allthereindeersaregirls · 04/05/2021 13:41

The island will be 1.1m away from the rest of the units. the peninsula would be the same.

The cupboards are full floor to ceiling height with a library ladder to access the very top ones. Plus we have a separate utility and pantry so I'm not so bothered about cupboard space too much.

How long would your island be? I am not keen on the island from the pics you have shown - to me, it looks like an island has been put in because the current trend is to have an island but the peninsula would have suited the space better. The island does not look long enough to have the impact I would want it to have if I were to have one.

We have a very similar space and have decided to have a peninsula. We tried putting an island into our plan but the island looks quite small, so we were concerned that it wouldn't be much use (especially with most of it taken up with a hob). I prefer more worktop space next to the hob, so a peninsula was more practical. Also, we already have a problem with the kitchen area becoming a bit of a corridor so having an island would mean family were able to get in the way either side. With a peninsula, we're directing traffic to one end of the kitchen.

2.5m x 1.2 or 1.4 wide

With those dimensions and that distance between I think you could do either, the peninsula would be more practical and a u-shape layout is very good ergonomically, it would be the sensible choice. But when you're talking library ladders (very envious) I assume you're in pretty expensive territory and it would be a shame to not have what you most want. Do you have a preference?

It's actually surprisingly cheap - we're using DIY kitchens for the units. The joiner is doing the fancy stuff to get the library ladder to work after DH and I suggested a way to do it.

I like peninsula, DH likes island. I suspect DH will win this round!

Is there any way you can mock up the layouts using boxes? That might help show you the pros and cons of both.

I like that idea!

@Allthereindeersaregirls

2.5m x 1.2 or 1.4 wide
I take it back - 2.5m is a decent length for island too so both would work. My personal preference is still peninsula but that is more because of the way I cook and use my kitchen
Africa2go · 04/05/2021 18:52

Island - you will DEFINITELY get in each other's way if 2 of you regularly work in the kitchen, particularly as it looks like have the sink would be at the "closed" end if you had a peninsular.

We have an island roughly the same size (about 2.6m x 1.2m) and it would drive me nuts only being able to access part of the kitchen by going around it (i.e. if you had a peninsular). If you're cooking on the hob on the peninsular and someone wants to come behind you to get a drink of water from the sink / wash hands etc, you haven't got much room if they've got to come behind you to access the sink. It makes much more sense to have an island with access either side.

I also might be slightly biased by the desire to have no corners at all in a working kitchen!

thelegohooverer · 06/05/2021 17:03

I have ladder envy. Dh vetoed that idea when I suggested it.

We went from a 1.4m gap to 1.1m on the advice of our designer and it’s a huge improvement. There was always an extra half step in the bigger gap.
