Hello
Just wondering if anyone has gone for IKEA kitchen and which model, looking for a modern one. Any regrets?

Thanks

I have got white handleless Ikea units in my utility room - they’re great. I’ve got white Ikea laminate worktop in my kitchen and it’s wearing very well.

OldSpeclkledHen · 29/04/2021 21:30

I love my IKEA kitchen (nearly 4 years old)

Will miss it when I (hopefully!) move!

CucumberandLemonade · 30/04/2021 07:11

We got the Varsta industrial kitchen. But with wooden wall cabinets. Looks fab and great storage solutions. However it was a shit show when building. Delivery had many missing items and some were also damaged. To get IKEA to replace or to deliver missing items is a right proper ball ache. Dishwasher was faulty and they kept getting replacement order mixed up. In the end they actually paid an Uber guy to deliver it! Cannot make it up! It could all go fine for you and we might just have been unlucky. But it was so stressful. Kitchen looked fab after it was built tho!

We’ve got the new recycled green (literally and figuratively) Bodarp one – matt slab green doors and drawer fronts. It’s great but shows up every sticky toddler paw print, and adult ones too – we went with push-open cupboard doors on the wall cabinets and they get so mucky, but it does look sleek and minimalist without handles.

Our builders haaaaaaaaaated it and us, and missed out so many of the little doodads and extras, and the doors/drawers still need tinkering with to align properly. It’s not a huge kitchen but the delivery did take up our entire sitting room, floor to ceiling – be prepared for more boxes and packaging than you’ve seen in your life, and be ruthlessly organised about checking it off against the list and keeping bits in the right place.

stillcrazyafterall · 30/04/2021 08:35

Not new, but our IKEA kitchen (the carcass) is 20 years old, have just replaced the doors. It's brilliant. Wouldn't consider anywhere else when we move.

PaolaNeri · 30/04/2021 09:23

Mine is just 2 years old, Kallarp light green gloss which I think has been discontinued, with their wooden worktops. I needed a really slim wall to ceiling larder type cupboard and the kitchen range didn't have the size, so we used the carcass and doors from the wardrobe range in a contrasting gloss grey. My dh is a builder and has fitted tons of kitchens and had no qualms about Ikea.

Appliance wise, we only had the extra large induction hob, perfect and cheaper than brand names. However, I did have Neff ovens but that was needing hide and slide due to their position.

They are easy to clean and despite very heavy use are unmarked and still perfect. We used the kitchen plan service in store, but still ended up going back about 4 times to swap things over or pick up bits missed off, but we are not far from a store, so not a problem.

I always see people complain about the installation of ikea kitchens. Lots of builder complaints, but I know 2 carpenters who love them & don't understand the difficulties reported. Maybe their skill set is just better suited than a general builder?

Our old rental had a 15 year old ikea kitchen, it was dated but solid.

Mollymalone123 · 30/04/2021 10:59

Ours was installed: years ago and builder loved them but that was because he was used to their system if dong it and also the plumbing is v different to usual-but again they were v efficient and I’m v happy with it.It’s the pale beige handless gloss with a dark wood veneer tall cupboard and large 3 drawer unit- we chose to use two different designs

malloo · 30/04/2021 20:34

I'm just about to get one! But drawer fronts have been out of stock for ages so not yet ordered. I did lots of research before deciding on ikea. Main thing for me is they make the most of every inch of space, very important as my kitchen is not big and I really need more storage. So the base cabinets use the space nearly all the way to the ground instead of having a big gap where the plinth is. And you can customise every bit of it. Hope I'm making the right decision!

Lunaballoon · 30/04/2021 20:45

@stillcrazyafterall I’d love to replace the fronts of my IKEA Faktum units. The carcasses are still fine but I always thought the IKEA units are non standard size and not easy to get replacement doors. Are you having yours specially made?

Zinnia · 01/05/2021 02:09

@stillcrazyafterall Superfront do Ikea Faktum replacement doors (lovely, but based in Denmark I think so shipping will be high), as do a few other replacement door companies (Naked Doors will do custom sizes, for instance; also check out Custom Fronts, Plykea, Foxstowe - not sure off the top of my head which have Faktum sizes as an option but I think most will do bespoke).

We are about to replace our 10yo Faktum, only because we're extending the kitchen as the units themselves are still in good nick. We'll be doing Ikea again only this time with either Naked or Custom Fronts doors (not quite decided yet).

If I were having Ikea doors I'd be seriously tempted by their new bamboo range, also really like the green one mentioned upthread (interesting to hear about the finger marks though!), the new Sinarp/Hasslarp dark wood styles and the black shaker one they do also looks great.

Zinnia · 01/05/2021 02:09

Sorry that should have been @Lunaballoon!

ChocOrange1 · 01/05/2021 02:45

We built our ikea kitchen ourselves about 5 years ago. We have Metod cabinets with white gloss Ringhult doors. It was easy enough to put together and looks more expensive than it was. However, the white gloss can get a bit grubby looking. I like all the little extras like spice racks and pull out pantry sections or little mini drawers for saucepan lids. And I like that you could easily replace the fronts if you wanted to update the kitchen, without changing all the units.

Mrbob · 01/05/2021 02:48

Also have the gloss green ones. Excellent bargain. They just need to be fitted properly. Also have a friend who has had wooden front ones in for maybe 20 years and they are still going strong. Its all about getting someone decent to put them in

bonfireheart · 01/05/2021 16:45

@malloo not having plinths sounds great! Which ones are you getting please?

lunar1 · 01/05/2021 16:50

My IKEA kitchen is lovely, but I will never have another. Over 15 separate deliveries because they got it so wrong, things are dispatched in a really odd way using separate systems depending on what you need. I paid the IKEA designer to come out and measure, she missed loads of important things.

I was very close to making them rip it out and give me my money back. Because they screwed up so badly I got a refund of a third of the total price-it wasn't worth the horrendous time I had getting it fitted.

Cissyandflora · 01/05/2021 16:52

I used faktum and ringhult gloss white. I designed and built it myself and love it. I’ll be redoing soon because I need a whole kitchen renovation and I’ll probably be able to keep a lot of the current kitchen and use again. I have a pantry, built in ovens and spice drawer. Everything is great.

malloo · 01/05/2021 18:03

bonfireheart

We're getting Metod, with Axstad blue fronts on the base cabinets and Voxtorp matt white for the wall units.

Am a bit worried though by lunar1's experience of installation though!

delilahbucket · 01/05/2021 18:13

We wish we didn't get an Ikea kitchen. The worktops are crap, covered in dents and scratches. You can't move a plate with scratching it or open a jar without putting it on a cloth first. The cupboards damaged so easily by our cack-handed joiner. The microwave/oven stack is poorly designed and the oven broke after less than a year. The tap is too short and doesn't rinse the sink and they were all the same size.
You get what you pay for and IKEA has gone downhill vastly in terms of quality over the last two years.

SwedishEdith · 01/05/2021 19:06

I've a Faktum but wish I was able to wait for the Metod one. Have used that in quite a few holiday lets and love it even more. I didn't use their worktops or appliances though except the integrated fridge freezers. I'd use again because I like the no faffing around with prices.

HBGKC · 01/05/2021 21:01

@burritofan oh no, I've got my heart set on the Bodarp matt green doors! And I have a large, messy family, and am not particularly houseproud... are they really a bad idea?

Platespinnner · 01/05/2021 21:17

I had IKEA in last house and it was significantly cheaper, and significantly better, than the premium make one I have now!!
The IKEA stuff is designed and tested to be used and used and is cheaper because of their process and waste minimalist approach,
Wish we’d liked their designs more when we’d done this one- actually wish I’d just been less fussy.
Also- their designer was significantly better than anyone else we saw at all.
NB current kitchen was £15k so not cheap.
IKEA one was more like £4k for context...

burritofan · 02/05/2021 06:48

@HBGKC These pics will out me as a slattern, lol. It’s really only from certain angles and cleans up easily (should I ever lift a finger). My toddler graffitiing on it with crayon was an absolute BUGGER to clean off.

All in all I like it though – I’d had my heart set on a painted Shaker kitchen (can you imagine the crumbs on a shaker door with my standards?!) but we couldn’t afford it, and the green answered all my prayers for a non-white, non-grey, non-blah kitchen. It’s hard to photograph but it’s greener in real life.

I have a white and grey high gloss Ikea kitchen, very sleek and modern looking. We've had it for 8 years and it's great, I love it. No issues fitting, we did it ourselves. We ordered a white marble worktop separately from a local firm. Looks fantastic after 8 years!

There are companies online that make bespoke doors/fronts/hinges etc to fit Ikea kitchens, so you can get the designer look for a fraction of the price. So buy all the carcass etc from Ikea, then splash out on custom doors. Search for Devol/Ikea hack kitchen ideas.
