We have a kitchen which we love but after four years feel ready for a repaint. It's stayed in good nick but as the kitchen and living room are a big open plan space it would be nice to have a refresh. Currently they are an F & B slate type grey and the worktops are a light marble composite. In the main area there are no wall cabinets but there is tall larder unit so very visible throughout the room. We have quite a large area of natural stone in the room which contains shades of grey, green and goldish specks. When we first had the kitchen done I was tempted by a very dark blue or Downpipe by F & B. What are the trends now or does anyone have a colour that really worked for them ?

Following as I'm trying to decide on our new kitchen colour and am finding everything very boring..... I'm considering pink now just fir something a little different.

SollaSollew · 14/04/2021 16:57

I keep reading that dark blue and grey kitchens are going out of fashion but people seem to love them so if that's what you want then I would go for it.

Green is very popular at the moment and I considered a couple of F&B greens (breakfast room and pigeon in case it's relevant) but in the end we went with Shaded White which I do love, it's a warm grey beige.

thanks Solla and Drama. I think grey was possibly going out of fashion when we had it done four years ago but I think its a great neutral. Just looking for a change now really. Pink sounds fun but I'm not sure I will get that past DH Grin

@SollaSollew

I love your kitchen. I'd lift it up & put it in mine if I could!

It's the look I want but I think the shaded white is a little bit more beige than I'm looking for - but it looks beautiful in your light.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 14/04/2021 19:32

@TheDogsMother

Green seems to be the in coming' colour, but personally I don't like it, so I won't be doing that!

I think I'm pretty much decided on a dark grey/charcoal textured woodlook. For the base cabinets. I don't generally like cabinets in different colours, but I think I might do the top cupboards the same colour as the walls - pale grey/white as the kitchen is quite small & I think dark wall cabinets might be too much and there definitely not enough cupboards without them (well with them either tbh)

AnnieAnoniMouse · 14/04/2021 19:34

In fact I'm probably putting in what you're taking out! LOL.shame you're painting, not replacing!!!

Where did you get your cabinets from?

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2021 21:22

Annie the kitchen was new too our spec and made by a joinery company four years ago. It's beautiful but we (actually more I) wondered about a refresh of colour. I am wondering about a dark green.

@SollaSollew are your walls & woodwork also shaded white or just your cabinets please? What is your ceiling please? I’m looking at school house white, shadow white, shaded white & drop cloth and trying to determine how light or dark to go on walls, cabinets and all the other woodwork.

whatisthislifesofullofcare · 14/04/2021 21:37

I have dropcloth, with white marbled quartz worktops and dulux absolute white light reflecting paint on the wall. very happy with the look.

SollaSollew · 14/04/2021 21:51

Thanks @TheDogsMother I loved everything that I saw on the devol website (sadly out of my price range) but found it really useful for inspiration on colours.

@NotDonna the walls are Dulux diamond Matt white. The ceilings are Dulux Supermatt white which is white without being brilliant. Tbh I wish I’d been a bit braver with wall colours but I found school house white looked a bit yellowy in the kitchen part of the room and shadow white was practically indistinguishable from shaded white. In the end the builder just said go with white and then repaint later when you’ve had chance to think about it. In my bedroom I’ve just done walls, ceilings and wood including panelling all in one colour and I love it.

We recently did ours and got the original cupboards repainted. Did f&b french gray. Is a lovely non invasive green. Also open plan. We nearly went grey and I'm so pleased we didn't. It's warm and cosy and modern at the same time

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2021 22:03

All our walls are white but it's a barn so that seems to be fairly traditional and lightens it up. I will take a look at Dropcloth and French Gray

We're toying with a dark kitchen, with marble works too to lift it. Worried it might date?

I have a unit in Down pipe

Lots of stained wood (obviously not possible if your kitchen is currently painted) and greens coming through on the design sites at the moment. More black than we’ve seen in recent years too.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 14/04/2021 22:15

We did our kitchen last year. Wall cupboards are white and base ones are dark navy (all are handleless) and the tall fridge/freezer unit at one end is all navy. Marble effect worktop & upstand and a light grey glass splashback instead of tiles. White walls. We already had light grey curtains and furnishings in the other/dining part of the room so the grey glass and grey in the marble worktop pulls it all together.

I know people say these colours are going out of fashion but I don't really care, I love it!

Dark green seems to be the latest trend.

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/04/2021 22:22

I’m about to do my base units in my pantry and boot room very dark navy. But I’m late to the party - every new kitchen at the moment seems to be navy and white

I'm really not sure why people care of a kitchen colour is fashionable or might date? I don't worry about whether the 1930s fireplace or the plaster coving in the sitting room is dated, or if the geometric tiles in the porch are "so last millennium", or if the magnolia in the front garden is cool. Why is the kitchen somehow a place for fast fashion when the rest of the house isn't?

Just get a good quality kitchen that will last in good condition for as long as possible, in a colour and style you like.

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2021 22:58

I do get your point Gaspar. We were fortunate to have a bespoke kitchen that we can keep for years and it can be repainted. Because it's so visible throughout our main living area I'd like to keep it fresh/up to date alongside.
