Moving house - take fitted carpets

Moving soon and have lovely fitted carpets. If new owners don't want them - has anyone ever taken them with them? Does it ever work?

OP posts:

Why wouldn't the new owners want them?

It would potentially be okay to uplift and maybe avoid damage but you'd need to have rooms smaller than the carpet size to have them refitted. I couldn't be bothered!

Would you take the underlay too?

User135792468 · 09/04/2021 20:24

I would broach it very gently if that is your intention. If I was buying a house, then I would be massively worried about the vendors gutting the place if they said they wanted to take the carpets. I would probably reconsider going ahead as I would be worried the whole time. Others may completely disagree but that’s just my opinion.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 09/04/2021 20:25

I can’t imagine why the new owners wouldn’t want them.

GreyhoundG1rl · 09/04/2021 20:27

Why would you want them? Do you think they'll fit your new house? Confused
It would be beyond weird to take them.

Unreasonabubble · 09/04/2021 20:27

Have you specified that the fitted carpets are not included in fixtures and fittings? Because if you have not, they could sue you if you take them without them realising. You are giving them the option to buy them?

Enidblyton1 · 09/04/2021 20:28

I agree with the comments above. Even if the buyer doesn’t particularly like the carpets, they are obviously in good condition (otherwise you wouldn’t be wanting to take them). No buyer will want to move into a house with bare floors - unless you have beautiful wooden floorboards.

StephenBelafonte · 09/04/2021 20:28

Don't be daft you can't take the carpets.

Scarby9 · 09/04/2021 20:28

I have thought about this if /when my parents downsize.
Really noone else would want their highly patterned but very good quality wool fitted carpets but they love them andI am sure would settle in any new place much more easily with familiar flooring!

pilates · 09/04/2021 20:29

I’ve never heard of people taking carpets with them.

I think they may have done in the olden days.

Please don’t do it.

alteredlife · 09/04/2021 20:29

Well I hate carpets and when we moved house, we pulled them up immediately to replace with wood flooring. So if the vendors had asked us we'd have been happy as it would have saved us the work of removing them. I think it is worth asking. I'd probably find it a bit strange for them to take them though, as they'd never fit exactly into their new home.

MixedUpFiles · 09/04/2021 20:30

This is bizarre.
You should tell people before they make offers.
Also really shouldn’t expect the carpets to work in a new house.

Crossfitwidow · 09/04/2021 20:33

Just throwing this wild theory out there....could you not purchase the same carpet for your new home?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/04/2021 20:33

Won’t they be glued down?

Oblomov21 · 09/04/2021 20:36

WTF?
You can't be serious? Why would this even occur to you, for a millisecond?
a) everyone knows you just. Don't.
b) they won't fit new house.

Fuck. I've heard it all now. The definition of measly and tight. Hmm

AfternoonToffee · 09/04/2021 20:37

Our buyers asked if we would take up the carpets, DH refused. However it does show that not everyone wants them, but you would need to check before filling out the fixtures and fittings report.

Nettleskeins · 09/04/2021 20:37

I think it is perfectly reasonable if the buyer doesnt want them. Just ask.
You can take the money for the carpets off the sale, charge separately, and they will save a teeny bit of stamp duty too!

LawnFever · 09/04/2021 20:39

This is a silly idea, not worth the bother, they most likely won’t fit your new house and it’s not a normal thing to suggest or do at all

Nettleskeins · 09/04/2021 20:39

If the carpets are new and not to taste of buyer, why is it measley and tight?

crimsonlake · 09/04/2021 20:40

My sellers offered to sell me their carpets and at quite a price too. I declined and they left them anyway.

GreyhoundG1rl · 09/04/2021 20:43

You mean reduce the house price by the cost of the carpets (are second hand carpets worth anything?) and then try to flog them to the buyer separately?! Who'd fall for that nonsense?
userxx · 09/04/2021 20:45

@crimsonlake

Cheeky fuckers.

StephenBelafonte · 09/04/2021 20:45

Surely the house your moving into already has carpets?

Enidblyton1 · 09/04/2021 20:45

Are the carpets very expensive ones OP?
It might not be worth the hassle of having to pull them up, cut them, transport them, potentially discover they don’t fit properly etc
Unless you can do all of that yourself you might not find you save much money.

LookItsMeAgain · 09/04/2021 20:55

They are part of the fixtures and 'fittings' that must be left behind. They are fitted carpets not rugs so you can't take them with you when you leave.

BackforGood · 09/04/2021 20:57

Clearly a lot of very young people on this thread.

Of course you can take carpets with you.
It used to be very normal and commonplace.

I realise it has become unusual these days, but how can it be 'tight' when the OP has said "If the new people don't want them" ? Confused
There are lots of people who don't like carpets, so if the new people are throwing them out, why wouldn't the OP put them to good use ?
