Moving house - take fitted carpets

Moving soon and have lovely fitted carpets. If new owners don't want them - has anyone ever taken them with them? Does it ever work?

[quote doublehalo]Gosh, so many people responding on this theard who haven't the faintest clue about selling or buying a house.

Here's a link to download the TA10 which you should probably all read...o_0

I actually habe no idea what your point is. I have bought and sold several times, it’s clearly not the norm to remove everything on that generic form intended to capture everything.

What exactly are you trying to say?

I’m in rented and my house is being sold. I am absolutely taking the 18 month old carpets with me. I paid for them and laid them onto bare boards when I moved in. Even if they don’t fit where I’m going I’m not leaving them.

Wow. Dog in the manager doesn't come close 😂

Myexisadick · 10/04/2021 16:40

@GreyhoundG1rl why?

GreyhoundG1rl · 10/04/2021 16:41

You have no use for them, but won't allow anyone else the benefit?

Myexisadick · 10/04/2021 16:43

They cost me £2,000 why would I leave them for my landlord to benefit from them?

anyoldtime · 10/04/2021 16:59

Would people who take carpets also take up wooden floors?

I think it’s different if you’re renting.
GreyhoundG1rl · 10/04/2021 17:13

Well, maybe. Chucking them in a skip rather than leave them is incredibly mean minded.

Myexisadick · 10/04/2021 17:24

@GreyhoundG1rl In my situation this is definitely not mean minded. Without saying too much I’ve had structural repairs made to the property due to an absolutely irresponsible landlord. There’s not a lot I can do about that but you can bet I’ll be taking the carpets and informing any prospective buyers of my intentions.

Don't be ridiculous.

Just because some people are letting you know this absolutely used to be the norm, and, whereas it now has changed, it still isn't unheard of, there is no need to try to ridicule people.
Floorboards are clearly part of the structure of the house. Carpets aren't.
IME (3 houses of my own and 5 when living with my parents), people have never taken all the carpets, but, when you've relatively recently paid out hundreds, or thousands for a high quality carpet in one room, that you know will do you well for years to come in your new home, it makes sense to value that.

It was a genuine question. Floorboards are not part of the ground floor structure of modern houses. They are laid in lieu of carpet. If you take up floorboards, there will be concrete underneath. If you take up carpet and underlay. there will be concrete underneath. Why is one seemingly ok but the other isn’t?

I have taken fitted carpets with me, when I moved from rented to owned. Luckily I had the same carpet in both living room and hall, so could patch them together to fit my new, bigger, living room Grin. Very few people noticed!
GreyhoundG1rl · 10/04/2021 18:11

I'd imagine very few people commented.

Tinkerbellflowers · 10/04/2021 18:28

It's completely normal to take carpets. There are tick box options on the Fittings & Contents Form when you sell a house for whether you are leaving carpets or taking them.

It’s really not. 😂
mellicauli · 10/04/2021 18:53

When we moved in 1978 my parents took the 1964 bedroom carpet with them (it was practically new in their eyes). I was just wondering if they still had them but yes I guess it worked OK. They got someone to fit it.

But as people say, I don't think this is the done thing any more.

GreyhoundG1rl · 10/04/2021 18:56

Maybe fitted carpets weren't really the norm back then, melli?

2thumbs · 10/04/2021 19:00

Perfectly fine to take carpets (or anything else) with you when selling a property. However, if you’ve already accepted an offer, the buyer will probably be assuming that they are included if they haven’t explicitly been told otherwise - you may need to negotiate on price if they were set on keeping them. As has been said previously, just communicate with them

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 10/04/2021 19:03

If carpets were being taken I’d want to know before making an offer, so I could base my offer accordingly. If I found out after my offer that they were being taken, I’d reduce my offer.

SmednotaSmoo · 10/04/2021 19:10

To give a different perspective... As a child of the 80s, we moved several times in tied accommodation (so no buying/selling involved, and also vacant possession, but not much cash around). One carpet was demoted from living room to dining room to master bedroom to spare bedroom over 8 years. It was just as hideous at the end as the beginning...

m0therofdragons · 10/04/2021 20:56

In the 1970-80s this was fairly standard but in today’s world it’s not the done thing.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 21:07

I moved house twice in the 1980’s. I left carpets behind and moved into houses with carpets.
