9-11k for a new bathroom

Just had a quote for 9-11k for a new bathroom. We're in Central London. The price seems a bit OTT. We need everything doing, new tiles, bath, vanity unit, lights etc but is a relatively small space. They also said it would take 3 weeks. We only have 1 bathroom and there are currently 4 of us living in the flat!

Basic bathrooms start at £4K. Add in London surcharge and a style that is better than basic, and it doesn’t take long for the price to creep up.

We've just been quoted £11k Inc vat for a small bathroom and separate loo next door. This is for a complete overhaul with mid price fixtures. We're in Yorkshire.

I'm reassured to see that this is probably not completely over the top! We had a complete breakdown of costs and the hourly rates for all the trades seemed fair, based on our experience with a recent kitchen extension.

picknmix1984 · 30/03/2021 04:34

We paid £8k 3 years ago but I sourced all fixtures and fittings myself to keep cost down. It is quite a large bathroom though and was half tiled throughout. Also moved a window to accommodate a shower. We live in the North.

"Best tip is have it done when you are away"

Don't ever consider this unless you have a lot of experience of them and totally trust them

Dinosauraddict · 30/03/2021 11:35

My DF is SW and had two done last year - £8k each. My DM is SW and had one done for £7.5k. We're SE and got 3 quotes last year and all were c. £9-10k.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/03/2021 11:47

Bloody hell, very expensive.

Had ours done last year. Completely gutted and redone. New shower, screen and wiring for shower replaced, towel radiator, vanity unit, fully tiled all the other bits and flooring. Not bottom of the range fittings, but not top of the range either, apart from the shower.

In the South West. All in £3,200, bathroom is average size.

lockdownbreakdown · 30/03/2021 11:48

Jesus! Basic bathroom and basic tiling with lino floor 2.5k outside of London. Your quote looks huge!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 30/03/2021 11:53

If we had a quote like that I'd be booking them in! So far I've been quoted £23k and £15.5k. The cheaper quote doesn't include fitting. I priced everything apart from bits of plastic pipework at £5.5k and that includes some luxury items. The higher quote has astronomical labour charges for the job and includes moving the doorway and taking out a non-structural wall.

DP is going to manage the trades and I'm going to source all the fittings myself.

FayleWatersWaters · 30/03/2021 12:10

A small bathroom could take 3 weeks if it's just one fitter working alone (and not working hugely long days/not working weekends).
It's hard to tell if the price is reasonable without seeing a breakdown of the labour and parts.
You could always look at sourcing the tiles and bathroom suite separately and ask for a quote for just the labour (and extras like grout, tile adhesive, etc - I think it might get too complicated if you sourced all the extras yourself).
I had a small bathroom refitted in 2018. I'm in the south-east (not London) and I paid £1600 in labour. We used a general handyman type fitter though, rather than a tiler/plumber/bathroom specialist.

Ha I was quoted £10,000 12 years ago to redo a shower, just a shower, not including materials! Post code inflation at it's worse. I told him he was out of his mind (part of a big firm - would never ever use them).

justasmalltownmum · 30/03/2021 18:36

Ours was £6k took 10 days.
We had to have a portable toilet outside.

Memeapple · 30/03/2021 20:41

Gosh. It doesn't seem like 9-11k is so out of the ordinary. Company would supply all materials. I'm happy to source from Wickes etc. We want metro tiles and fake marble porcelain tiles. Floor will be kept the same. They said I needed to spend at least £500 for a steel bath. I'm not so sure...

We paid £13k for a bathroom, en-suite including moving walls and a new boiler. All good quality fittings and tiles too. All jobs took 2 weeks.

Dryadia · 30/03/2021 20:59

Not London, 3 years ago. 5K bathroom switch bath to shower and the downstairs cloak 2.5K.

Took ages though as they did a major cockup which meant they had to redo all the wall tiling in both rooms ( entirely at their cost).

I need someone to measure up and advise me on what will fit. We have a small enquire with corner shower and I am desperate for a bath with shower over. I cannot find a company who will organise everything for me. Any advice?

GoLightlyontheEarth · 02/04/2021 16:52

Ensuite

Salarymallory · 02/04/2021 16:55

Seems decent for me
Any info on the brands?
Mine were Amtico aqualisa and groehl

3bywats old and looks sparkling new.

Were they recommended to you or you pulled off random off the Internet?

Not the company for you
  1. You want to source own materials. So do that and then just pay Labour.
  2. You don’t trust them. Not a good start

@Qc16

We’re in SW London - we got fittings for our en-suite shower room is from the Bathroom Discount Centre - we have a Crosswater sliding 1200mm door, Crosswater thermostatic shower valve and rain head and shower on riser, basin is a double Catalano one, the taps are HansGrohe and the loo is Duravit with a Geberit concealed cistern - total cost of that £3672. Plumbing was included total replumb of 4 rooms and new radiators fitted - total £3980 - a max of £1000 of that was for the bathroom. Flooring is large format porcelain costing £550 and the tiling £1000. That makes a total of £6170 for the whole bathroom - look for plumbers out of central London.
I still can’t believe the amount some of you are paying for your bathrooms - all of the fittings in our en-suite are mid range - not low end as in Wickes etc. Btw - the £3672 we paid for the fittings also included a 120 cm Crosswater mirror with dimmable led lights and a heated pad.

My suggestion is to source all you need yourself then employ a local plumber to do the work.

ceilingsand · 02/04/2021 18:02

There is no way in hell I'd pay that kind of money. A stylish bathroom doesn't need to cost that.

Hollyhead · 02/04/2021 18:05

Did ours last year 5k all in for a 1.5x1.8m space including plastering. We kept tiling to a minimum to save on cost. That was midlands

roses2 · 02/04/2021 18:09

I'm in zone 2 London and we had our bathroom re done 4 months ago. Got 4 quotes ranging from £5k to £15k for total refurbishment. I went with the cheapest and he was excellent. If you are anywhere near Wembley please pm me and I'll send his details.

Otherwise I would phone around some more. We used the checkatrade website and found the quotes to be more palatable than recommendations from nextdoor or local Facebook pages.

ancientgran · 02/04/2021 21:58

Just got a quote for mine, new floor, moving toilet and basin, new bath, shower over the bath, heated towel rail, tiling. Quote plus bits I need to buy comes to between £4 and £5k, price of tiles unknown at the moment as I can't make my mind up so I can't be exact but lowest will be £4.5 k I think. I'm south west.

It is a nightmare, I have had so many plumbers not turn up to do a quote, turn up and then disappear. Finally found someone but I'd almost got to the point of deciding to just forget it.
ancientgran · 02/04/2021 22:02

I think my quote is £1,900 for labour but I'll have to check that.
