Decision fatigue...bedroom wallpaper edition!

We're 6 months into a renovation project which has been pretty much non stop since we moved in and with that, home schooling, working full time and lockdown I think I've finally cracked. Everyone was really helpful when I was asking about kitchen colours a while ago and I'm really pleased with it now, but am at the point where I really don't know if I can make another decision.

Sadly the builders don't care about that and are starting on my bedroom next week building a wall in a long thin room to make a separate dressing room and then redecorating. I need to order paint and wallpaper this weekend.

I've attempted a couple of mood boards and these include furniture I've already got so am not totally starting from a blank slate. I would like a feature wall (I think) even though it's not the done thing but I will be picking out the background colours for the paint on the rest of the walls IYSWIM.

I'm just totally stuck with what to go with, any thoughts/comments would be gratefully accepted!

I prefer the green from those two choices.

I wouldn't choose either for my own bedroom as I don't find that style of decor very calming. It's a bit busy looking for me. I'm very boring though and prefer to sleep in quite a plain room.

smellyolddog · 04/03/2021 22:28

Sorry just saw the pink curtains, you could also go green walls there is a paint called cactus from Neptune.. and go the opposite way.

Paint cactus, pink accessories 👍

PurplePansy05 · 04/03/2021 22:32

Both are a bad choice for a bedroom IMO, sorry. Simpler and quieter.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/03/2021 22:34

Do you like birds OP? What about something like this: www.dunelm.com/product/dorma-maiya-grey-wallpaper-1000164981 - obviously it has a light grey background instead of white and has the birds but otherwise has some similar colours, vines and florals to your paper but with a more subtle/delicate look and is very good quality for the cheap price.

@FarquarKumquatsmama Thank you!

Crazzzycat · 04/03/2021 23:07

I don’t think that the style of your furniture goes particularly well with either of those two wallpapers.

Based on your choices so far, I’m guessing this is totally not your style, but something like this could work

I'd actually go with the first choice of furniture and a cream patterned wallpaper possibly, but not as loud as these two you've been considering. It needs to have a dialogue with the rest of the room so I'd choose a more delicate pattern in a similar colour theme to the furniture, flooring etc.

PurplePansy05 · 05/03/2021 07:00

Darker curtains as well, and the mirror doesn't go with the room style wise or fittings wise.

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/03/2021 07:22

To me the expensive one looks like one of the old Sanderson wallpapers from the 1979s in an updated colour palette. I like it but I think it’s too expensive for what it is and too busy for a bedroom unless you’re only using a tiny amount.

SollaSollew · 05/03/2021 08:22

Thanks everyone that’s a lot to think about and I’m going to look at everyone’s suggestions this morning while I have breakfast. I think the general consensus is that the wallpapers I like are too busy for a bedroom. As everyone is saying the same thing (a mumsnet first?) that has to be right and I’ll live to regret it. I certainly don’t want to make an expensive mistake.

I’m not normally indecisive but I am definitely tired and am glad we’re taking a break after this before we start another tranche of work.

I may just paint it to start off with and if I still want wallpaper take some more time to consider rather than buying in a rush and ask them to do it when they come back in the summer to do the rest of the upstairs.

Thank you Flowers

Have a look at this site for wallpaper. Absolutely stunning, high quality products. We did our hall, stairs and landing for £10 a roll.

We did our master bedroom/dressing room/ensuite last year during lockdown. DH and I did most of the decorating ourselves but didn't want to risk putting up the expensive Cole &Son wallpaper and so as an interim measure we just painted the walls in the background colour of the wallpaper. By the time we were able to get a real decorator in to put up the wallpaper I was torn about putting it up at all since I'd become so used to the calming effect of the plain walls.

We did put it up and I love it but whilst its a very bold and large pattern the muted colours mean it works well in a bedroom. I don't dislike your choices but personally I think your furniture and other choices are pointing in a more art deco direction

Kamma89 · 05/03/2021 11:17

@SollaSollew That's absolutely the right choice. Paint it a lovely plain colour & make the wallpaper decision when you're more energised & up for decision making

PurplePansy05 · 05/03/2021 13:21

I was actually going to suggest just painting it instead of wallpaper. You could also consider putting a different texture on one of the walls, e.g. wood. We're doing this in one of the bedrooms.

Thanks for the link to that site. I've found a lovely William Morris style paper for only £15 a roll! We've used Morris papers a lot in a previous house and paid at least £55 a roll!

@Midlifephoenix

The palm one is more on trend. I do not like the pink flowers at all. Both are quite busy though. I like a feature wall.
This. And it's nicer and less busy.
Porridgeoat · 05/03/2021 23:56

Pink one is awful sorry. It’s like my granny’s house gone wrong.

Olive green one is on trend yet retro. Green gets my vote.

Porridgeoat · 05/03/2021 23:57

Sanderson may have some wallpapers for olive look

Giraffey1 · 06/03/2021 00:03

I think you would be wise to stick with paint for now and plan any future wallpaper at your leisure.
I couldn’t live with either scheme as I’d find them both far too busy. I like my bedroom to be be simpler, calmer and more restful
Good luck with whatever you chose!

PurplePansy05 · 06/03/2021 10:42

Decal is another option, OP.

Samanabanana · 06/03/2021 10:52

I vote artemis. Beautiful, bold and classic!

SollaSollew · 01/04/2021 17:24

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say thank you again for all your replies.

It’s nearly finished (minus a chest of drawers I’m still waiting for) and I am really pleased with how it’s turned out. Decided to have some panelling built to make a shelf above the bed then half way through I read the panelling is chavvy thread and nearly cried. Anyway it’s done and I’m now taking a break for a while from any more home improvements till my decision fatigue wears off. Thank you again for all your help.

@smellyolddog

Order some paint from farrow and ball called cinder rose, buy some bottle green linen bedding from John Lewis and grab a pink or cream throw and a some crazy cushions..

Add some house plants and plant holders form Oliver Bonas and you are all sorted.

Save yourself getting bored of the wallpaper in 6 months and always having to have plain bedding.

I think given you are in a rush and tired you will regret either of those, given a choice I'd also say the pinky one 👍

Agreed. Plain coloured walls in nice colours allow much more scope for pretty bedding and other decorative bits.

BlueCherryBlossom · 01/04/2021 17:45

Oh, missed the crucial last update before I posted! Looks great OP!!
