Ideas for this wall?

We have just moved into a new house and not sure what to do with the wall in the kitchen?

Would it look better painted another colour? Darker perhaps?

Or maybe a clock or shelf placed above range cooker?

Not sure whether to tile behind it?

Just after some ideas please as looks a bit plain at the moment. The kitchen is a duck egg blue colour and the walls a very pale grey.

I'd order a piece of clear glass to put behind the range rather than tiles, easy enough to get a heat proof piece online. Easy to put on yourself or you could get someone in.
I wouldn't paint that wall, I'd put a painting or large clock on it.
Love your kitchen by the way😀

minipie · 02/03/2021 14:46

Tiling the whole chimneybreast could look fantastic - I’m imagining some sort of slim brick tiles in a pastel colour.

Or tile within the recess for a less brave option!

orangenasturtium · 02/03/2021 15:07

The black range looks quite harsh against the pastel duck egg blue and grey. Do you have anything else in the room that balances it out?

I would probably tile behind it to make a feature of the fireplace/alcove, either in black and white or strong colours (like your oven gloves) or a bold pattern. I think you would have to echo the curved shape of the fireplace though, which would mean refitting the housing for the lights so there isn't a straight line at the top.

I would add a clock on the wall above the fireplace or something else decorative.

Bluesheep8 · 02/03/2021 15:25

Definitely tile in the alcove. Large clock or a shelf above.

jackstini · 02/03/2021 16:20

I would put a glass splash back behind the range painted to match the kitchen
(You can take the paint if you have it or a drawer front to the glass place and they will match it)

jackstini · 02/03/2021 16:20

And a clock above too yes

Piglet92 · 02/03/2021 16:22

I would put a big clock above and tile behind the cooker. Paint slightly darker if you still don't like it.

EezyOozy · 02/03/2021 16:26

Not sure if this helps but this is ours, a similar set up.

I love your kitchen - the duck egg units are lovely and I like the pale grey walls with the medium grey floor.

I'd tile behind the cooker - in mixed shades of blues and greys to bring it all together (and maybe even mix in some cool greens too for a pretty watery/seascape kind of feel). Then I'd add a big classic black and white clock on the wall to tone in with the black cooker and white ceiling and work surfaces.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/03/2021 20:40

The reason I'd put a big round clock rather a shelf - as I think a straight shelf might look odd above the curved archway (plus you already have the picture rail which acts as a visual "shelf").

cooperbug · 03/03/2021 10:24

Thanks for all of your ideas, I think tiling it will be the best option. Just no idea which tiles to go for?

I’m usually really good at this kind of stuff. Just finding it hard to visualise

There are beautiful white-ish square tiles used in Studio McGee kitchens which I think look great because they have slight imperfections? That would look good in the chimney breast. Maybe a shelf with cookbooks on it above to add a bit of colour?

SollaSollew · 03/03/2021 12:51

Hi @cooperbug what a lovely kitchen! I agree with tiling the splashback. I also think I'd be tempted to add a shelf at the same height as the top of the units and then paint the wall underneath it the same blue as the units. I think the grey makes it stick further out into the room than it needs to IYSWIM.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2021 21:18

@cooperbug I was initially visualising something like this (but not necessarily in herringbone) - tiles with varying shades of pale blue, pale green and grey, perhaps pearlescent so they change colour as differing lights hit www.toppstiles.co.uk/sharme/sharme-seagrass-mosaic-tile. But might look too green?

Or similarly you could use a more matt tile but in lots of different colours, laid in a mosaic pattern - you can get metro tiles in a variety of blues, blue/greens and greys from lots of tile shops.

Alternatively if you want to risk patterns you could try subtle ones in blues/greys/whites/blacks (to bring in all the current kitchen colours) like this: www.tiles-direct.com/floor-tiles-c27/barnet-tiles-c632/world-parks-stanley-31-6cm-x-31-6cm-wall-floor-tile-p1540

Or smaller mosaics in blues/greys: www.tiles-direct.com/mosaic-tiles-c11/dream-ocean-4-8cm-x-4-8cm-30cm-x-30cm-mosaic-tile-p4546

Or if you want to add brighter colours but still some blues to tone: www.tiles-direct.com/mosaic-tiles-c11/dream-joy-4-8cm-x-4-8cm-30cm-x-30cm-mosaic-tile-p4544

Hope this helps - it all depends on what your style is and whether you want bolder or more subtle, plain or patterned?

TeddyBeans · 03/03/2021 21:21

I'd paint it really dark and hang copper pans from the rail

Honeyroar · 03/03/2021 21:27

I’d tile inside with a similar coloured tile to the cupboards. And definitely have a clock above.

cooperbug · 03/03/2021 21:28

@IamnotwhouthinkIam thanks so much for all of those ideas.

Thank you to everyone in fact, some great ideas for me to consider.

Depending on budget I’d either tile within the recess (metro style) or put antiqued glass for a sleeker look and add a chunky shelf maybe with corbels - mine is a bit like this (it’s a Tom Howley design). The shelf really elevated the kitchen to another level IMO.

milinhas · 03/03/2021 21:32

This may be too much but I like the idea of bright randomly patterned tiles in the alcove - eg these Tom Pigeon ones: www.parkside.co.uk/arrange-tom-pigeon/p/1130

cooperbug · 03/03/2021 21:47

Wow @Loopyloututu2 is this your kitchen?

OP posts:
Loopyloututu2 · 03/03/2021 21:52

It’s not my actual kitchen but mine is very similar, by Tom howley (that one is a Humphrey Munson but they’re pretty much the same design)

  • I don’t want to post a pic of my range and shelf as there are some very personal items on it that friends would recognise!
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/03/2021 21:53

Yes to the clock. In my mind's eye I can see a railway station style clock. Would bring some more black to the room, to balance the range. Loving your kitchen btw.

cooperbug · 03/03/2021 21:53

I understand, no problem. It’s beautiful

OP posts:
Bouledeneige · 03/03/2021 21:53

I agree. Tile behind the stove - I'd go for a a pattern to bring some texture in. I might go a darker shade on the chimney breast but definitely put up a large clock and maybe a shelf.

cooperbug · 03/03/2021 21:56

Any suggestions for darker colour shade on chimney breast wall?
