Recommend me a tumble drier.

I've never had one before but our new house has one and it does rain a lot on Scotland so I can see the advantages of one. The previous owners left a Beko it's only 13 months old has hardly ever been used and 1/2 the programmes don't work.
I mainly want to dry sheets and towels and odd pair of jeans, as I have warm utility room and a Sheilas Maid by budget is £800 max preferably closer to £600. Ideally it must be very energy efficient.

Well the door handle on our Siemens one broke today and we figured out we’d had it for over 13 years! So would definitely recommend it :) It’s a condensing one if that makes any difference. And gets pretty heavy use as I like to dry all the DCs clothes in there save any damp waistbands etc

IseeScottishhills · 25/02/2021 18:08

Thanks for the recommendation will look into one.
What’s the difference between a condensing drier and a heat pump one?
Our Beko has this tank thing where water collects it’s constants saying it needs emptying but there’s hardly any water on it.

Heat pump dryers are more energy efficient than condenser dryers.

We've just bought a Bosch heat pump one. It's A++ rated (compared to our old B rated condenser). Very happy with it so far.

Chumleymouse · 25/02/2021 18:30

We have a indesit one , very basic just low heat/ high heat and timer. Had it donkeys years and never been any trouble ( it vents to outside)

We don’t use it as much nowadays as we usually put the clothes on the airers in the utility with a dehumidifier on, it does an excellent job.

Kotatsu · 25/02/2021 18:33

You'll not regret a Bosch. I have the 2nd or 3rd up in the range, and it's as good as any tumbler I've ever had (including a miele), and half the price of the 'premium' brands

Floralnomad · 25/02/2021 18:34

We’ve just bought a Bosch condenser dryer and I can’t fault it , it dries things much more quickly than I thought it would as we’ve always had vented before . My husband did extensive research and decided condenser would suit us better than a heat pump type as I use the dryer a lot and don’t want to be taking hours to dry things .

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 18:36

I just got a Bosch heat pump one for £698 from John Lewis (with one with 7600 in the numbers) and am very impressed with it. We have plumbed ours in so it doesn’t need emptying and it washes the condenser itself and it messages the phone when it’s done

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 18:37

And it doesn’t take hours to dry and is a++ efficient

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 18:38

And has 5 years guarantee

MrPanks · 25/02/2021 18:39

I've got a basic Miele condenser, think I paid about £600 for it a few years back. I love it. Not fancy but does an amazing job and a good energy rating. I had a Beko one previously which was about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Everything came out as wet as it went in and forever needed its filters cleaning.

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 18:40

@IseeScottishhills have you washed the condenser on the beko one? It might work better if you do.

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 18:41

Second the Bosch. I have a Classixx 7 and it is incredible.

I love a condensor because its the perfect water for the house plants.

Super quick dry really lives up to its name and the automatic sensors for drying are great. It will also rotate every now and then if the clothes are dried but you havent had time to get them out yet (to stop creasing).

Going strong 3 years later.

I think regardless of the tumble dryer you get it should be atleast a couple of sizes up from your washing machine.

Rollerboots · 25/02/2021 18:52

We have a heat pump Candy O'vita.
It has a massive drum, so fits 2 kids with ease.
We chose heat pump as it's in an internal small bathroom, which couldn't be vented, and the heat pump produces less ambient heat.
Downside is it takes longer, but uses less energy, so will cost less to run.
The O'Vita had a great chamber at the front on the machine which collects the water, (looks like a washing machine)

IseeScottishhills · 25/02/2021 18:55

"@IseeScottishhills have you washed the condenser on the beko one? It might work better if you do."
Washed it? Its about 18"long and a plastic tank how do its wash it? J
It looks like this it has two fluff filters one in the door and one at the bottom it keeps flashing up that they need cleaning and I keep cleaning them!!

OK looked up a Bosch on JL website one with a heat pump, I know this sounds ridiculous do I just plug it in a go? I dont want one where you have to put a hose pipe out the window.

We have had gas tumble driers for 30 years. We are on to our third in that time. The only brand is White Knight. Under £400.

We have never regretted this as they are much cheaper to run than electric ones, clothes dry quicker and come out no ironing needed apart from pure cotton things.
Having 5 children the washer was always on, so I think this has saved me a fortune over the years.

IseeScottishhills · 25/02/2021 19:12

We dont have gas!

We’ve got a Candy o’ vita heat pump. Was fairly cheap £300ish and is great. Quiet, cheap to run (I’ve noticed no diff in energy really!). Would really recommend it!

Wondermule · 25/02/2021 20:02

I just got a Beko and it’s fab - silent and clothes come out properly dry. Don’t have to empty the water all the time as well. Highly recommend it!

TheGriffle · 25/02/2021 20:04

Do you know what, I can’t fault my 5 year old White Knight half load sized vented tumbler that I got for about £99. We keep ours in the garage, don’t look after it very well and it keeps running and running.

DonGray · 25/02/2021 20:06

Bosch Classixx 7 has been good for us

The White Knight for £99 is also good and generally last 10-20 years - simple but very little to go wrong - had one before the Bosch and still have one in our second home

changi · 25/02/2021 20:08

How old are they?

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 20:21

I think you are supposed to wash it in the bath or something! Which is why I just bought the self cleaning one Grin Have a google in how to clean it. We had an old vented one before but the bearings had gone and it squeaked like mad.

The JL Bosch one I bought you can either just empty a water drawer or it comes with a pipe which goes into the drain pipe where the washing machine drain goes which is what we have done so no need to empty anything.

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 20:22

We did have to put an extra bit of plumbing onto the waste pipe so two pipes could drain rather than just the washing machine one

BonnyandPoppy · 25/02/2021 20:27

Here’s a YouTube video on cleaning the beko condenser
