Extractor fan with a hose? I need Piglet John...

We have some windows being fitted and our kitchen one currently has the fan fitted in the glass. It's in a tight corner where the cooker is, and there isn't any wall space where we could fit one going to the outside world.

The new windows won't have the option to have the fan in the glass.
However, the window frame is quite deep (about 30cm and tiled) so one could fit on the wall there - but can you get one with a little hose that can hang out of the window?

Hope that makes sense! We have a hood fan but the kitchen gets very steams when I cook so we do need the extra fan power.

Cant you just open the window?

dementedpixie · 24/02/2021 09:55

Dors your hood fan vent to the outside?

dementedpixie · 24/02/2021 09:55

Does*

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 09:56

Sadly that doesn't do much good - the way the corner is - it's hard to describe - but the window is a tight corner and pens into a courtyard, and the kitchen is all tiled so we get a lot of condensation.

The people who owned it before us didn't have a fan and the place was a mould-fest.

The hood fan... good question!

Unlikely it goes outside as it backs onto the bathroom and there are no external vents that I can see.

Do you think there's some way to vent the hood to the space on the wall you're talking about - you get flexible hoses for this purpose if you have wall cupboards for the hose to sit on

Soontobe60 · 24/02/2021 10:01

What’s the reason you cant have a fan but into the new window?

Soontobe60 · 24/02/2021 10:01

Put, not but!

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 10:02

I suppose I really should find out where it's going to first of all! I really hadn't given it a lot of thought.

They were both put in at the same time when we had the kitchen done (so I assume there was a good reason to have the hood and the extra fan). The hood on its own isn't brilliant, to be honest.

Soontobe60 - a very good question!

We are in a block and so all the windows are part of one huge project. I asked for this when they started the project (ages ago), and then when I spoke to the builders, and then to the window company (plus on a weekly basis to the management company)... then two weeks before they are due, they have got back to me and said 'a fan you say? oh no, we cant do that...' grrrrrrr

Hoods that don't vent outside just recirculate the air so are a but pointless. Looking at changing the hood to vent outside might be worthwhile

DareIask · 24/02/2021 10:05

We have an extractor on an inside wall which is brilliant, although it's a bungalow. It must go via the roof space and I don't know if it could go
In the gap between floors but it's very efficient.

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 10:06

I wonder if this can be done if the hood isn't all that close to an external wall?

You get flexible hose for directing it to an external vent

Soontobe60 · 24/02/2021 10:10

Once the windows are in, you can quite easily get a new pane made with an extractor. We had a cat flap put in our patio doors, be bought the cat flap, got a window fitter in who then measured and ordered a new pane of glass with the flap sealed in already. He then replaced the old pane with the new one. We’ve still got the old pane!

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 10:12

Ah now that sounds like a possibility. I have the electrician coming over to have a look soon (i hope) as the old one will definitely need to be disconnected before the new ones go in.

Anyone had new windows - how messy is it going to be?

Had mine done last year. It isn’t a really messy job, just cold 🤣 . The fitters should tidy up as they go and make good any damage they make. We just needed to do a bit of paint touch up around the frames in a couple of places.

PigletJohn · 24/02/2021 16:37

I strongly recommend venting it through a wall. A builder or plumber uses a Core Drill which makes a very neat round hole through a brick or block wall. It is also possible to put a vent through a roof, rather like a chimney, but this needs a skilled roofer and a special tile, because holes in roofs are prone to let in rain. Modern cooker extractor hoods usually take 125mm diameter.

The flexible hose is not as good as rigid duct. Usually round, but rectangular can be used if space is restricted, for example on top of or inside wall cabinets.

If you have a loft above, duct can easily be run along to an external wall.

I can't picture your layout, can you post a sketch?

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 17:08

Excuse the drawing - it’s from above!

So the window runs from the window ledge (which is about 10” deep to almost the ceiling (there is only about 4 inches between the top of the window and the ceiling.

Next to the window is a built in cupboard that runs the length of the rest of the kitchen.

The kitchen backs onto the bathroom - which has no exterior walls as it backs onto a staircase and hallway.

At the moment the wiring comes from the back of the upper cupboard on the very top corner and is wired to the fan (the switch is lower down on the wall - actually where it says

Oh it did! The ledge is the window ledge.

I see 2 pictures now

Liquorishtoffee · 24/02/2021 17:10

I know! For some reason I couldn’t see it the first time! It’s just the same rotten sketch twice.

is "wall" an internal wall or an external wall?

Does the bathroom have an extractor fan? Where does it duct to?

How old is the building?

PigletJohn · 24/02/2021 18:41

Does "cupboard" back onto an external wall?

can you sketch the wall layout please?
