What to do with my kitchen? (Pictures included)

I’ve name changed for this as I’m posting pictures of my actual kitchen and want to keep my normal username.

I’d love to redo our kitchen completely but I don’t think we’ll have the money any time soon. These pictures were taken before we moved in and the walls are white now.

We’re hoping to move in the next few years as we’re in a 3 bed and would like a third child. I love our house for so many reasons. It has a lot of redeeming features: good sized bedrooms, separate large dining room, big garden, popular area, two brand new bathrooms fitted last summer...

Would this kitchen put you off? If you’ve just redone your kitchen, how much did it cost?

That kitchen wouldn't put me off buying.

Could you do some cheap cosmetic updates? Personally if I couldn't afford a new kitchen I'd paint it and the tiles too. Navy or green kitchens are quite popular at the moment.
I'm based in Ireland and follow The Carlow Paint Hub on Instagram... there are some great ideas there.

Inks42 · 20/02/2021 09:46

The tiles stand out. I would suggest painting the tiles white.
You could also paint the cupboards, but it might not be needed.
No reason to spend lots of money as the person who buys the place will want to do their own thing.

CoronaIsWatching · 20/02/2021 09:50

No, it's a bit early 90s style but I would just do something like re-tile it with white tiles and paint the cabinets sage green if I couldn't afford the re-fit

AnonymousArmadillo · 20/02/2021 09:51

The tiles really are awful! Who thought they were nice?! Confused I’ve heard painting tiles never looks good. I’ll have a look at some examples though.

I really like the green tiles.
I would paint the cupboards white.

It’s completely inoffensive OP but obviously not exactly Instaworthy.

I would leave it, it is what it is. A perfectly serviceable kitchen that a buyer can change to their own taste in their leisure.

Mine on the other hand ... we were just talking about it last night and I really think we will need to do it which is so frustrating!

nextslidepuhlease · 20/02/2021 09:54

You can buy adhesive plastic tiles that you cut to size as a temporary cover up- as an alternative to painting them. Amazon do a selection and TikTok has lots of videos with people using them successfully- they look good.

Beaniecats · 20/02/2021 09:56

Leave it its absolutely fine

MaryLennoxsScowl · 20/02/2021 09:56

I quite like the green tiles and they’re quite fashionable again. Tiles should also be shiny and painted ones look weird. Here’s a stunning kitchen with green tiles: www.devolkitchens.co.uk/shop/handmade-tiles/devol-emerald-green-london-tiles

I really don’t like the floor tiles though and they doesn’t go with the cupboards or wall tiles - could you look at replacing those or even just putting down Lino over them?

AnonymousArmadillo · 20/02/2021 09:56

You do?!

Maybe it’s me not being keen on such permanent colour. Grin As soon as we moved in, we painted the whole house white with only a couple of walls a different colour (can easily repaint them and already have with a couple). Our new bathrooms are completely white with colourful towels.

I think the tiles are the thing that would make the most difference. Is it possible to change them without removing units? If so I would consider putting in some lighter neutral tiles. Then you can accent and add colour with kitchen accessories. If you can’t replace them then yes look at painting them

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 20/02/2021 09:59

Sorry if this sounds rude. But the kitchen would not put me off at all, because it is horrible, I would be completely justified in replacing the kitchen with one I liked.
When looking recently, I disliked most of the places with new kitchens as it was never to my taste and they were always grey.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 20/02/2021 10:01

Don't paint the tiles. I'd rather have those than painted ones.

The kitchen look clean and perfectly usable. Bit old fashioned for my taste but it wouldn't put me off buying as I'd factor in putting a new one in at some point anyway.

What you have to weigh up is if the cost of you replacing the kitchen will be recovered when you sell. Do you want a new kitchen for yourself to use for a couple of years? If not I wouldn't bother.

AnonymousArmadillo · 20/02/2021 10:01

Maybe it’s just me having stared at it for the last four years. I’m glad most are saying they wouldn’t turn the house down for it. I’ve been worrying about it.

Its a reasonable size kitchen for the size of the house with space for a dishwasher (see the gap in the photo) as the washing machine and tumble dryer are both in the garage.

So many wall cupboards and fiddly bits! It wouldn’t put me off buying and if it doesn’t bother you live with it or paint it.

Metalhead · 20/02/2021 10:02

I don’t mind those tiles, they’re better than the weird orangey ones we had in ours! We recently painted ours a creamy white, and while you can tell they’re painted from up close, I think it looks pretty good. You’d have to do at least 2 coats though, with that dark green possibly 3.

Eleoura · 20/02/2021 10:02

If you are happy with it, I'd leave it.

We previously had shaker doors like yours and the grime getting stuck in the cracks drove me batty. Also, the doors either side of the oven had peeling paint/coating. We had the the doors and handles replaced, but kept the actual carcass. Our new doors are more modern and smooth- no more shaker groves to clean! The entire kitchen looks brand new and many people thought we'd had it all redone.

I'd consider replacing yours doors with a cream or white and just leave the green tiles.

Luckyelephant1 · 20/02/2021 10:04

The tiles are fine and dark greens and blues are quite in at the moment anyway. It's the units that are awful. I would paint them a neutral white/cream sort of colour, change the handles, get some nice lighting and change the floor if you can afford to.

Floreatfloruit · 20/02/2021 10:05

I would also leave the tiles and paint the units white, plus maybe try to replace the black worktop.

AnonymousArmadillo · 20/02/2021 10:06

The tiles make the room feel much darker and it’s not actually a dark room. I’m a white furniture sort of person so the cupboards don’t suit my style.

I didn’t like the look of the kitchen when we moved in but the bathrooms were much more pressing to change so we did those.

The floor tiles don’t match, you’re right. They look a bit better now the walls are white.

As with others, I’d rather replace an old kitchen myself than have a new one that wasn’t worth replacing but wasn’t to my taste. Unless the rest of your house is showroom-pristine and the kitchen just looks odd in contrast, I’d go with selling it as is.

CrystalMaisie · 20/02/2021 10:09

It’s fine I’d leave it. If possible without leaving visible holes, I’d take off the fancy rails on the shelves.

ladygindiva · 20/02/2021 10:10

Might not be everyone's taste but I love the tiles but would like to see the cupboards painted white/ off white. That kitchen would not put me off as it is though, it's perfectly attractive/ liveable.
