What to do with my kitchen? (Pictures included)

I’ve name changed for this as I’m posting pictures of my actual kitchen and want to keep my normal username.

I’d love to redo our kitchen completely but I don’t think we’ll have the money any time soon. These pictures were taken before we moved in and the walls are white now.

We’re hoping to move in the next few years as we’re in a 3 bed and would like a third child. I love our house for so many reasons. It has a lot of redeeming features: good sized bedrooms, separate large dining room, big garden, popular area, two brand new bathrooms fitted last summer...

Would this kitchen put you off? If you’ve just redone your kitchen, how much did it cost?

Wow OP - I LOVE the tiles lol. I'd paint the cabinets which do look boring.

AnonymousArmadillo · 20/02/2021 16:58

Did not expect people to love the tiles. Confused

I like the tiles! Grin they are very in at the moment.

Paint the units white and think about replacing the countertops for quartz. The price is not that high and your kitchen will look brand new.

Also, put some cookbooks on display and add long yute rug to add warmth.

foodtoorder · 20/02/2021 19:18

I am not on team tiles.
I would replace them to match your flooring and work tops a bit more.
If you are moving at some point your buyer will replace all so make it liveable for you but updates enough to not put buyers off.
Maybe kitchen handle updates too? Very easy and cheap enough to do.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/02/2021 23:19

What colour are the inside of the cupboards? If they are white I'd say repaint to match, but I'd rather live with wooden doors and units than a mitch match of half wood effect/half -painted.

Otherwise, I'd say no the kitchen wouldn't put me off buying. If I had a small amount of money to spend I'd probably repaint/replace the tiles first in white (the green is nice but I don't think it works with the unit colour and flooring).

I'd also possibly find out how much it would cost to replace the black laminate worktop with a lighter white/grey one (because I think dark colours suck the light out of a room).

I think re-placing the floor tiles and kitchen units would be messier, and a lot more more work and expense so I'd try these smaller, cheaper fixes to make it lighter, brighter and more neutral first (either as a seller or if I was your buyer).

CandidaAlbicans2 · 21/02/2021 08:58

I like the suggestion of removing the tiles, getting the wall reskimmed if needed, and adding an upstanding with pale tiles (or leaving it bare). It'll lighten the room without it being a major job.

AnonymousArmadillo · 21/02/2021 09:54

Thanks everyone. I’m thinking we might change the tiles. I know some people have said that green is in but I really do hate them and think they make the room feel really dark.

The problem with changing the doors/painting them is that the carcass is the same colour so we’d either have to paint the whole lot (which some people have said would definitely put them off) or replacing the doors would look odd.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam the inside of the cupboards is an off white colour.

To those who have suggested losing some wall cupboards, I would agree with you and if we were redoing the whole kitchen, I would possibly do that. I’d reconfigure the whole room and get rid of the door, make it a window, move the breakfast bar to under the large window, have a large pantry cupboard in the corner where the breakfast bar is currently and get rid of some of the top cupboards... This starts to get very pricey for a house we won’t be staying in for more than a few more years.

With my very limited abilities, I had a go at whitening your cupboards 🙈😆 Looks good I think!

They 100% would look better a lighter colour! I think you’ve done a sterling job! I might print that large and stick it over what I’ve currently got. Grin

I love your tiles but then I'm a fan of green and it is coming back!
I would change the floor and the change the sink for a stainless steel one but wouldn't paint the units cos I think they coordinate with the tiles- love 'em
Grin

Changing the sink is definitely on the list. I hate the one that’s there. It always looks dirty no matter how much I clean it.

Here are the before and after for the house I painted the cupboards in (18 years ago, so will look dated now!). I painted the doors and outside the units, then replaced the work surface and handles. Plus new Lino. It really wasn’t difficult or expensive. The same guy surveyed the house when I bought it and when I sold it. When we bought it he said the kitchen was tired in his report. When he sold it he commented how much better the new kitchen looked.

I like your green tiles. You could paint your units and introduce wooden accessories like this kitchen from Devol

@AnonymousArmadillo - I would replace those tiles with painted glass splashbacks and paint the wall in a light colour. You could also replace the floor but once you have a uniform colour walls and splashback it will look very different and the floor won't clash so much - it just looks a bit idsjointed. You could also possibly replace the handles but you would need to ensure you dont have grooves left where the existing handles are. I certainly wouldn't start repainting doors etc especially if you are moving. Freshening up the walls and tiles will look loads better. It should be an easy job to chip the tiles off albeit messy.

RuthW · 21/02/2021 12:48

I quite like it. I would change the floor though.

whenindoubtBake · 22/02/2021 18:47

Green tiles could be really modern if you paint your cabinets eggshell (warmer than white and would complement the green). You could even change the worktop but that's if you really wanted to.

whenindoubtBake · 22/02/2021 18:48

The tiles could be updated though...
