This used to be Herrison Hospital some history here - I think it might freak me out a bit. It still looks very institutional.

Yes. There's one nearby in Knaphill and the flats are ruddy amazing!

AtLastEarwax · 14/02/2021 10:00

Yep - buy and rent. Make a ton out of that 🤑

Lulu1919 · 14/02/2021 10:05

That flat has loads of potential
Big rooms etc
It just needs making into a home

StephenBelafonte · 14/02/2021 10:06

Yeah I've also lived in a converted abattoir.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2021 10:07

Yes totally. Beautiful building.

Waveifyouknowme · 14/02/2021 10:07

Fuck that. I know where it is and I know what went on. Not in a month of Sundays. I'm not normally woo but fuck no.

reefedsail · 14/02/2021 10:08

Hmm, I'm not convinced I would. I must have watched too many horror movies set in old hospitals!!

OP posts:
Waveifyouknowme · 14/02/2021 10:10

And the pictures inside, especially the red room and the institutional curtains, I can hear the screams. No no no

DoodleLovin · 14/02/2021 10:10

No way! Heard so many stories of people buying in renovated hospitals and hearing voices and seeing things. I’m not a big supernatural believer but I’m a nurse and have walked around hospitals at night and it’s pretty eerie.

reefedsail · 14/02/2021 10:10

@Waveifyouknowme yeah that's pretty much how I feel. I don't even look down into the valley as I drive along the A352. Grin

OP posts:
AnnaFiveTowns · 14/02/2021 10:11

I would. It just needs decorating to make it less institutional.

Supersimkin2 · 14/02/2021 10:15

No. And I’m desperate for a home. This ain’t one tho.

heart80s · 14/02/2021 10:21

My friend lives in a flat in a converted asylum near Leeds and it's lovely. Beautiful grounds and quite big. I went to the high school nearby so I knew about all the horror stories lol.

riotlady · 14/02/2021 10:25

Fuck no! I’m not fussy about someone having died in a house but that’s too many bad memories and vibes for me

Sillyreally1 · 14/02/2021 10:25

I live on the site of an old asylum. It’s beautiful, fields and trees. I wouldn’t have bought an apartment in the original building though, it’s very creepy.

dottiedodah · 14/02/2021 10:26

Not sure really .So many places like this though .Dorchester Prison up for development .Whittington hospital in N London was a workhouse .Many other examples Im sure .

Hatia · 14/02/2021 10:27

Why not? It's beautiful.

avocadospringseternal · 14/02/2021 10:31

No. I don't want to live somewhere that scores of people have been institutionally abused.

Kendodd · 14/02/2021 10:36

Definitely. It looks a brilliant home for the price. I wonder how much the service charge is?

Waveifyouknowme · 14/02/2021 10:40

@avocadospringseternal

No. I don't want to live somewhere that scores of people have been institutionally abused.
I was thinking about why it evokes such a visceral response in me and its this. Like the OP I won't look into the valley, the idea of my kids playing on the lawn or sitting looking out of those windows when such sadness and cruelty was inflicted on so many for so many years would be unbearable, things that happened in my lifetime, just no.
bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 14/02/2021 10:42

I stayed in a hotel in Switzerland that was a converted asylum. No woo stories & it was definitely more interesting that the bland corporate hotel 5 mins up the road that I would normally have been booked into without a colleagues recommendation, but it was very institutional so not sure I'd want to live there.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 14/02/2021 10:46

With current decor & furnishings it looks a bit like a doss house but it could be lovely if re-decorated & with nicer furniture set out to use the space better - I'd live in it

Bollss · 14/02/2021 10:46

Wouldn't bother me at all but it's totally devoid of any character so I wouldn't buy that properly specifically. I was expecting something fascinating and was disappointed.

PresentingPercy · 14/02/2021 10:49

A lot of these buildings might be listed. It’s not right to let them fall into decay. Lots have been pulled down. Awful things happened all the time years ago. Not just in mental homes and asylums. What about work houses? We do need to repurpose buildings and often in expensive areas they will sell.

Cocogreen · 14/02/2021 10:51

I wouldn’t. It would worry me.
My sister-in-law rented an apartment in a converted decommissioned 19th mental institution/asylum. Absolutely beautiful looking building from the outside, gardens, huge trees etc.
She is a really tough bird, no nonsense about her, works in the transport industry and the sadness of the place and strange atmosphere made her leave after only four months.
