How much did your small kitchen cost?

And where did you get it from?
I’ve been quoted 15k by Wren for the units and cooker, hob, sink and dishwasher.
This doesn’t include electrics, plumbing, lighting, tiling, or floor.
I’ve never done a kitchen refit before, but
15k seems a lot to me!!
I was expecting more like 6k!

I’ve requested appointments with Howdens and Wickes. DP and his friend could do the actual fit, so can save money on that.
Where did you all get your units and tiling, etc?

Got mine from DIY kitchens. All the units came in at £4k, I then spent circa £4k on appliances and the worktop. All in all mine came in at £10k inc tiles, electrics, plumbing and fitting and I'm in SE London. £15k is quite a lot for a small kitchen, and I certainly wouldn't pay Wren that. Or Howdens/Wickes for that matter.

Ah, I’m in SE London too @Smallgoon
I’ve literally just been on the DIY Kitchens site, and am impressed.

How small is small? What have you chosen for work surfaces - they can be a huge chunk of the budget? £15k unfitted just for what you state does sound costly, but depends on size.

Mine is about 2.7m/2.7m so small, cost about £5k all in and fitted, Ikea units, Corian work surface, tiles from a local independent. I like it a lot and people are always surprised it’s Ikea. (Will likely be letting it out in a couple of years so didn’t want to spend a fortune on something amazing with no guarantee it would be looked after.)

Sunflowergirl1 · 03/02/2021 06:02

DiY is brilliant. We have and friends have used them.

In the nicest possible way, get an expert kitchen fitter. It makes a massive difference

Dogsandbabies · 03/02/2021 08:03

I got an IKEA kitchen 5 years ago. £5k all in. Still really happy with it. And it wasn't small. I did but all the appliances separately (not for IKEA). Units, sink and worktops were £1,5k. Tiles and appliances around the same and £2k fitting.

PunchyAnts · 03/02/2021 08:07

Another vote for DIY Kitchens. Our units and worktop were under £2k, another £2k for appliances. Because the DIY units arrive assembled, our fit cost less than £500 and took a morning.

PinkPlantCase · 03/02/2021 08:10

Ours was about 7k for the materials from Howdens and we probably spent another 1.5k on the fitting. Though it’s small we have a lot of cupboard space so that pushed up the price.

PinkPlantCase · 03/02/2021 08:12

We also had to fully strip out the old kitchen and the various layers of tile and random electrical cables plastered into the wall. So that’s where a lot of of the fitting cost went as there were atleast 3 days of stripping out.

TitusPullo · 03/02/2021 08:17

We went for DIY kitchens for kitchen which is 3m x 2m, all in with fitting was £7.5k, I think the units and solid wood worktops were around £3k.

For the price, the quality of the units are fine although the paint chipped on the edge of a door very early on. Our carpenter said they are on par with Howdens and depending on your chosen builder you may be able to get a big discount on Howdens.

I would say however with DIY kitchens you are sacrificing the design service and also the ease of good customer service. If something is not right with your order you have to raise a ticket on their online system which is clunky and not great to use. You can’t just call and speak to someone. We were missing a component on our sink and as I couldn’t ring up and just explain what it was, it took me two attempts to try and explain in writing which delayed completing our kitchen by over a month. They also turned up to deliver at 10 at night, blocked the whole street and made us rather unpopular with our new neighbours.

SollaSollew · 03/02/2021 09:43

In my last house I had a DIY kitchens kitchen and got all the appliances from John Lewis and AO. It was 4.6m long in one run then a 2m island so not enormous. The units were about 3k, including fitting, appliances, taps and quartz worktops was £10k. I didn't have any tiles.

In my current kitchen we went with Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch. It's a bit bigger and the units were £7k. Appliances were about 2.5k. Sink and taps £400. Worktops quartz again were £3k. Painting and fitting were part of a bigger job job because there was building work involved so I'd estimate about £3k. One run is just under 6m and the other run is 3.6m so not a small kitchen but similar to what you're being quoted without fitting!!

There's a couple of pictures, picture 1 is my old kitchen from DIY and 2nd is my new kitchen from HMKOC

our kitchen is 11ft by 8 ft and we went with DIY kitchens but units, sink, worktops (laminate) and door handles only, already had washing machine and freezer so overall cost was
5 base units and four wall units, handles and worktops £3000
replaster all walls as they were bad £800
rewire and add extra plugs £300
free standing new gas cooker £400
fitting family member who is a joiner £800 ( should have been twice that)
tiles £100 we put those up
flooring vinyl £250
so £5850 altogether

sproutsnbacon · 03/02/2021 12:53

4K including fitting, tiles, tiling, plumbing and new free standing cooker.
Units 1.5K, sink unit 1K, tiles £100, tiling £150, cooker £500, remainder fitting the work tops and plumbing. DB fitted the units but didn't have the kit to cut the worktop.
I was quoted £3k for the kitchen but have a trade discount. I have a symphony kitchen and its brilliant quality. Would have another when I move

kirinm · 03/02/2021 22:38

Another in SE London who used DIY Kitchens. I think we managed to get it under £5k but DP wired everything (electrician) and we'd already had the plumbing done. We had a chippy come. and help with the worktop etc

Zinnia · 04/02/2021 00:51

I'm in the process of costing up a new kitchen almost exactly the same size as @SollaSollew's old one. Ikea is working out at about £6k incl appliances. Current kitchen is Ikea, still going strong, after nearly a decade with small children (now no longer so small, hence need for extension/ new kitchen). However if we go with Ikea it will be with fancy replacement fronts, worktop etc and higher spec appliances so anticipating final cost will be a fair bit more - though the carcass only costs of the Ikea layout are £1.7k.

By the way Solla, where was your previous worktop from? It's lovely (as is your gorgeous current kitchen, am pleased to see HMKoC do reeded glass as I'm planning to get a cost from them too)

Smallgoon · 04/02/2021 00:53

Happy to pm you some pics if it helps. For what it's worth, I really like Ikea kitchens too so you should check them out too. Their pricing is transparent and they're a Which Best Buy.
Smallgoon · 04/02/2021 00:55

@Zinnia I would guess that Solla's worktop in the first pic is calacatta quartz. I have something similar but wanted a darker veining than the grey.

theonlywayisup33 · 04/02/2021 01:25

Howdens for a medium size kitchen - £7K including everything. They are good because if there is anything wrong/ incomplete, it can be sourced immediately whereas with the other places, it can take weeks.

tigerbear · 04/02/2021 09:34

Great advice and information, thanks so much everyone!
And good to hear that it can be done for around £5-7k, which is much more in the region of what I’d anticipated spending.
Leaning very much towards DIY kitchens, especially as DP does house renovations fir a living, and has done a few kitchens before.
@SollaSollew I love both your kitchens!

@Smallgoon yes would love to see pics if you don’t mind!

SollaSollew · 04/02/2021 10:12

Hi @Zinnia,

Both worktops I got from a local stone mason. If you’re anywhere near south west London/Surrey I can recommend them. They are called Chic Marble in West Molesey. He had the slabs in stock so I don’t know what manufacturer it was from I’m afraid.

Btw HMKOC were really good and the only place I could find reeded glass which was what was the clincher for m to go with them. It was £50 extra per unit but I love it.

Do you mind sharing where you got the worktops from?
CoronaIsWatching · 04/02/2021 12:58

Way too expensive! I'd definitely go with Ikea.

tabulahrasa · 04/02/2021 13:07

4.5k from wren...

We didn’t get them to fit it though, just did it ourselves - they wanted about another 5k for fitting, the saleswoman did say that for small kitchens they were expensive for fitting as they don’t really charge to scale.

Smallgoon · 04/02/2021 13:16

@GreySkyClouds Hi, I opted for the Statuario Venato from by Classic Quartz, but purchased this via a local supplier and was able to haggle on price.

Thank you! I,m struggling to find worktops (probably because there’s too much choice!)

aliceandroo · 04/02/2021 16:38

Ours was 8k from howdens including fitting and quartz worktops (from somewhere else). I wanted diy kitchens but my builder really pushed for howdens and I wasn't confident doing all the measurements as we have a slightly odd shaped kitchen so I asked him to negotiate with them to price match the diy kitchens price and he did.
