Will these tiles look ok?

Before anyone says, yes it is just a standard new build kitchen. I'm aware they aren't everyone's cup of tea.

I'm wondering if this splashback will look ok? The cupboards are an off-white/light grey colour and the worktops are a premium laminate with a chalet oak effect. Our floor is quickstep LVT in a slate effect. The tiles themselves are thin gloss metro tiles laid herringbone, they are edited on here but they'd go up to the top of the extractor too.

Does it look ok? Or does the tiles being white clash with the light grey cupboards? I will be adding colour through plants and accessories before anyone says it's bland. I don't want to commit to a colour in the tiles as then I can't mix it up. Opinions much appreciated Smile

Zigzag edge 1 BUT note for this small zig zag effect you have to have your herringbones going sideways

Zigzag edge 2 with herringbones going the usual way - note this ends up with very large zig zag at the edge

@minipie

Last thought is how are you going to deal with the area round the window where there are no wall cabinets? With herringbone tiles you could either leave the tiles whole so there is a zigzag across the top, or ask your tiler to cut them so it’s straight across the top. If they are cut then you will need a tile trim or a small shelf to hide the cut edges. Horizontal brick pattern takes away this problem...
They are being cut straight, I haven't asked about what he'll put on them as it hadn't occurred to me so I'll check, thank you!

Or cut them and have a small shelf or tile trim

minipie · 30/01/2021 14:54

Cross posted! Yes do think about what you want, a small shelf with plants could look very nice and create a focal point around the window

minipie · 30/01/2021 14:56

Ah no hang on. A shelf would stop you opening the wall cupboard on the right

LemonViolet · 30/01/2021 14:59

I love the herringbone panel look!

Kottbullar · 30/01/2021 15:09

@YellowEllis

These were the only other tiles DH and I agreed on but I'm worried they'll be too grey as we have the light grey worktops and the slate floor looks grey too
These give a bit more interest than the herringbone ones.
Lottle · 30/01/2021 15:12

I'm not a fan of that more recent image personally. Have you played around with the Topps Tiles (or similar) visualiser? I love the amount of space you have between the end of your peninsula and your wall. What's the dimension of that, can I ask? I've got a similar shape kitchen being planned.

YellowEllis · 30/01/2021 18:12

Thanks everyone. I think it may be the worktops that are bothering me rather than the colour of the tiles. The slate floor, off white cupboards and white tiles just feel too cool for such a warm worktop. I might swap to this one which is still wood but a bit cooler, and it'll be a bit more subtle and leave the tiles as my original plan of all herringbone.

@Lottle I will dig through the plans and see if I can find the measurement for you

Personally I would avoid tiles which require a lot of light coloured grout in a kitchen as it will end up looking grubby.

Lottle · 30/01/2021 19:20

@YellowEllis please don't go to any trouble. I liked the warm worktop, though I can't see it in real life and I am an oaky greeny creamy fan!

YellowEllis · 30/01/2021 22:42

I'm just constantly picking at it because it's not perfect. I've attached the moodboards for what was our three options. I want A but DH thinks it's boring. Which would you say is nicest? Maybe I can win him over if everyone's agrees 😂

What about A but with herringbone tiles...? (Not a fan of the grey tiles personally)

Herringbone tiles are very much in 'fashion' at the moment, so your bang on trend in that respect. They are a feature to add interest to your kitchen area. Metro tiles running horizontal are now out.
Yes we have trends in the world of all things tile, clients want their splash backs add something to their kitchens.
My one piece of advice is never put white grout with a white tile, the grout can make or break the effect. The number one go to grout colour is currently Manhattan Grey by Mapei, I would say that 90% of architectural specifications for white tiles are specced up with this colour.
Get a good tiler, the cuts and setting out have to be spot on or it can look like a disaster zone.
Also if you want trims, go for stainless steel (brushed preferably) again the cuts have to be perfect and mitred.

Baxdream · 30/01/2021 23:56

A!

What about a coloured tile rather than white /grey in a pastel colour?

Baxdream · 31/01/2021 00:01

Like this?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 31/01/2021 11:54

Ha, I was going to say that grey grout is on its way out but see you have the opposite advice above! I like the herringbone but would definitely choose either very light grey or white grout - and I have white metro tiles with charcoal grout in my bathroom. Have you looked at zellige tiles? They come in metro shapes but are tinted slightly different shades so look more handmade.

Acovic · 31/01/2021 12:28

Could you do herringbone with a slightly bigger tile to minimise the grout? It's also less visually distracting.

Or what about a glass splash back - I'm on my second. Last was white, current one is blues-green. They bounce a lot of light around which as my kitchen can be dark I appreciate.

thelegohooverer · 31/01/2021 21:40

I love your first picture.

Soontobe60 · 31/01/2021 21:51

Your kitchen is similar to mine. We have grey stone tiles on the floor and grey tiles on the walls, both with dark grey grout.

I liked the first picture! I thought he the herringbone was nice!

Tatapie · 31/01/2021 22:13

I think the white herringbone tiles, look nice with units and worktop except for the splash back! Sorry! But shouldn't a splash back be wipe-able? Won't the grout get grubby from oil etc? I'd prefer a glass one, can get them colour matched to paint / tiles.
