How would paint this house?

NC'd as this is my house so quite outing!!!

House is being renovated which will include the exterior. We are getting replacement timber windows in exactly the same style and everything will be painted. House is Edwardian and most houses on the street are similar but not identical.

I don't want white woodwork. It looks grubby quickly and I prefer the look of coloured woodwork. If the house were brick, I'd go for a greeny/grey window frame or even really dark like Downpipe or something, but we are stuck with repainting the house so not sure what combo to go.

Most houses in street are either brick (not an option to us) or cream with white window frames - a few variants but nothing too exciting.

I don't want to look ridiculous but deffo want some colour. Even if it's dark grey/light grey (not sure which way round).

Suggestions gratefully received.

No advice but think it looks gorgeous in the 2nd pic!

A lot of houses round here are going for Dix Blue. They look lovely.

TheBeesKnee · 26/01/2021 12:39

Blue would look lovely. I love a deep green as well.

Or keep it cream with sage green woodwork?

TheCakeDiet · 26/01/2021 13:02

Love Dix blue. My bathroom is Dix.

What woodwork would you do with Dix though?

Thought about Parma Grey (my current front door is Parma Grey) but again not sure how to get away from white woodwork.

I’ll take a couple of pictures when I go out so you can see. It’s easier than explaining!
justabigdisco · 26/01/2021 14:05

Why can’t you get it sandblasted to take it back to brick? It’s not as expensive as you might think.

VinylDetective · 26/01/2021 15:10

Sorry, I misunderstood. The houses I meant have white painted brick/render and the woodwork is Dix Blue. It’s very pretty.

ProudAuntie76 · 26/01/2021 15:15

I’d honestly avoid the grey exterior look. It looks really dated and tacky already and the period houses local to me that have gone with the dark grey or black frames and grey paintwork are struggling to sell at the moment. I think it looks lovely as it is in all honesty. If I was forced to change I’d probably go for a sage green. Really any “colour” or “neutral” rather than grey.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/01/2021 15:17

I agree with pp on green. Beautiful house.

Flaunch · 26/01/2021 15:19

I’d paint it off white and paint the woodwork Matt black.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 26/01/2021 15:29

Well, if the first house isn't yours, can I have it please?

Do you fancy the house palms grey(looks quite blue) with scotch:Hague/railings door & woodwork?

I am leaning towards cream walls and sage woodwork at the moment. Although the Parma/Railings combo is quite appealing!

I don't want a dead grey at all. I would much prefer some actual colour!

Also, if I did cream with sage woodwork, can I have a pink front door? Or do i have to do sage?

OP posts:
VinylDetective · 26/01/2021 15:45

Oh please have a pink front door, that would be gorgeous. It would be grounds for divorce in this house or I’d have one in a heartbeat.

PinkyParrot · 26/01/2021 15:55

You have terracotta roof tiles (roof and porch) and on top oh garden wall. Only certain blues will go - I'm sure it's because cream goes the roof that it's chosen so often for these houses, rather than eg white.
I would say a soft airforce blue, maybe fab stone blue for door.

TheCakeDiet · 26/01/2021 16:03

Happy to paint out terracotta above door (I've seen this done on the street in whatever the woodwork colour is and it looks nice). Roof is obviously staying as is.

Is this combo a bit sickly?

Walls: F&B White Tie
Woodwork: F&B Cromarty
Door: F&B Calamine?

Alternative would be blues

We had an edwardian house a few tears back and did a cream on the pebbledash and windows but painted the cills, woodwork and front door in a green:

Our last house wAs victorian brick but we painted the windows DH white and F&B churlish green on cills and door which is lighter. Still love that colour and now have it in my kitchen. Sorry it doesnt show up very well in the photo!

The right shade of sage green could work well with a punk door.
A different style house but I think this colour combo looks nice.

I also really like F&B Rangwali for a door

I hope you don't mind some honesty... here goes!

It is a period house in a street with (presumably) other houses from that particular period, and I think it would be absolutely crazy to paint the window frames anything other than a traditional white. I'm really sorry, but there it is. Some people have renovated a 30's semi near us and have painted the window frames grey. It looks absolutely awful and they have completely destroyed all the charm and character the house used to have.

The walls would look lovely in cream, or (very pale) sage / terracotta. Have fun with the front door though, and of course you can paint the inside of the window frames any colour you like to go with the interior.

Clymene · 26/01/2021 16:54

Cream walls and sage paintwork would be beautiful.

nodogz · 26/01/2021 17:06

Racing green woodwork and cream?

I had a Victorian house painted cream, with cream painted windows and purple/plum ornate facia boards and front door. It was unexpectedly lovely, unusual and very classic in style. Looked ace against a formal topiary front garden.
