anyone with stacked washing machine and tumble dryer?

I would like to redesign our utility room, and want to increase storage space (for outdoor gear and sports kits and wellies etc) and floor space (to be able to iron in there).

An option is to stack the existing Miele WM and Bosch TD. However, I use the TD almost daily, and am also only 5 foot 1, and I'm wondering whether these mean that it would be a poor choice.

All feedback appreciated!

I’m 5’6” and my dryer door is at head level. Stepping stool? Presumably you have the same issue with wall-mounted kitchen cupboards? If not then I can’t imagine the dryer is going to be any more difficult.

NoParticularPattern · 25/01/2021 11:36

I think you’d be fine. Even if you have to use a stool it’s not like you have to cart it across the room or anything, you’ll just have to lift it from where it comes out to where it’s going. For me the extra floor space/storage would be worth having to use a small step stool to use the dryer.

titchy · 25/01/2021 11:43

Ours is stacked and I'm the same height - it's fine! Bottom of drier drum is about level with my chin so not a big effort to put washing in. And saves my back from bending down.

Waspie · 25/01/2021 11:45

I'm 5'9" and the top of the TD door is at the bottom of my chin. The top of the TD is at eye level. Mine are both Miele.

I don't think you'd have a problem with seeing the controls but if you are like me and keep the detergent on top of the TD you may need a small step to reach it?

IMissFrance · 25/01/2021 11:49

Not stacked but our holiday home laundry room has TDs above the washing machines on built in work surfaces. Works great. So could be an option if you don't want to limit yourself to a certain stacked brand.

I'm 5'4 and it's no issue at all to see what's in the TD.

WellTidy · 25/01/2021 12:17

I think I might be using the word 'stacked' incorrectly - I mean having the WM at floor level, and then the TD above it. I'd need a pull out shelf below the TD, I think, for ease of emptying and filling. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to fully reach inside the drum.

I would absolutely have to have a step, as I wouldn't be able to reach the TD controls without one. I just wonder whether I would feel that it was a pain to get the step, put it in position, use it, put it away on a daily basis.

Yes, I cannot reach anything below the first shelf in the kitchen wall cupboards, I have to drag a chair to stand on. I find this a pain, too! But I don't need to do this on a daily basis, and I'm not loading/unloading when I do this, I'm generally just reaching for a single item.

Mine aren't stacked but they were temporarily while we sorted the utility and I would have happily kept them like that if necessary. In terms of stool faff how about something like this https://www.dunelm.com/product/addis-folding-step-stool-1000070053?defaultSkuId=30201585&branchCode=0035&gclsrc=aw.ds&&cmmmc=plaagoogle--UtilityyStep%20Stools%5BGOO-LIA-UTILITY-STOOLS%5DDStepStoolslsBAUBAUkeyword&gclid=CjwKCAiA9bmABhBbEiwASb35V13HYN3c95Q7FeKS3I3tNL958dsCp3xSDFk3a-Tses8230yPnEPyWxoCDtQQAvD_BwE

hotcookie · 25/01/2021 14:00

Mine are stacked with no shelf in between (but you can get kits with a pull out tray to put basket on) I'm 5 foot 4 and can reach controls ok
I've seen pictures though where people put dryer upside down so controls are easier to reach, so that's another possibility

hotcookie · 25/01/2021 14:02

When I say no shelf the dryer is on a short length of worktop the fitter used to put it on, not a specific dryer shelf

movingonup20 · 25/01/2021 14:07

Mine are stacked, I'm 5'6 and it not sn issue at all, 8 years had them, recently moved and will be having this configuration again when we redo the kitchen and install the ground source heat pump

titchy · 25/01/2021 14:26

You'll be able to reach the drier controls.... as I said, mine are stacked, I have a pull out shelf (not that useful actually - when the shelf is pulled out it stops me being able
To get stuff out of the drier) and I'm the same height as you.

tdm1 · 25/01/2021 14:43

Mine are stacked, I'm 5'3 and have no problems reaching way above the tumbledryer to get the detergent. I'd suggest you measure your machines and mock it up so you can see for yourself whether it's going to work for you. I also have a pull-out shelf - the secret to being able to reach past it into the tumbledryer is to use a collapsible laundry basket so that it squashes out of the way as you lean over it!

Mind are in a bespoke cabinet. WM at the bottom and TD on top. It doesn’t have doors but it has a cupboard on top. I’m tall but shorter people wouldn’t reach into it.,

I wouldn’t have a shelf. If would get in the way of accessing the dryer. Instead, get your sink or a work surface adjacent to the stack. Any basket can just be put on the sink or work surface. That’s the most effective solution. It’s way better having them stacked by the way. I have a big hand wash sink with plumbed in draining board for excess water. Having this near the WM for getting rid of excess water works well although my WM is now excellent with hand wash!

cherrytreecottage · 25/01/2021 15:56

Also 5'1 and also have stacked washer and dryer! Never had any major issues, sometimes have to step on tiptoes to make sure I haven't left a lone sock in the dryer but space wise, works much better :)

Sgtmajormummy · 25/01/2021 16:07

Be careful about removing the water container. If I stacked my. MW & TD I’d be extracting the drawer of condensed water in mid-air or onto my head!
Halo

PresentingPercy · 25/01/2021 17:25

My dryer is plumbed in. No water to remove.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 25/01/2021 17:28

Mine are stacked in the garage, I'm 5'1.5 and have no problem using the tumble drier.....do have to be careful removing the water in the condenser unit to avoid spillages though! Smile

ReviewingTheSituation · 25/01/2021 18:11

Mine are stacked, and I'm 5'4". It's never even occurred to me that the TD is 'high'. We don't have a shelf between, but we've never needed one either. I'm not sure what benefit a shelf would be.

ElGuardiandenoche · 26/01/2021 12:57

I have mine stacked and I’m 4ft 10in and never had a problem with reaching in the drum, pressing any buttons etc. The water collector you have to slide out above your head but it’s not the end of the world. I have a table on the opposite wall and I just fold straight from TD to table.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 26/01/2021 19:51

I'm 4' 11" our washer and dryer are sort of stacked, washer on the floor and Dryer on the worktop above the washer, Dh built a pull out shelf that is under the worktop and above the washer, so I can put the basket on it when loading and unloading the dryer. Works great. I do have to close the pull out shelf for a final sweep on the bottom of the dryer to make sure I got it all.

Girlonatubetrain2 · 26/01/2021 19:59

I have my TD stacked directly on my WM
Has been for 10 years
7 years in my previous home before that
I am 5'0 - its never been a problem
I can comfortably reach the back if the dryer and its controls
I dont have a pull out tray - find unloading into a basket on the floor is easy enough

user1471538283 · 26/01/2021 21:39

Ours were stacked in our last house and I could reach. I'm 5ft 1. In our apartment the kitchen cabinets are so high I've got a little step. It's a childs fold away one from Amazon and it's a game changer!

Soontobe60 · 26/01/2021 22:32

I am 5’. I had a cupboard with my washer and dryer stacked, ie the dryer piece of worktop across the cupboard. I had no trouble reaching inside my dryer or reaching the controls. I never used a step!

Soontobe60 · 26/01/2021 22:34

Sometimes the size can be different thus causing problems when the washer is spinning. You should only stack appliances that are designed to stack.
HopeClearwater · 26/01/2021 22:50

Mine are stacked with a stacking kit. No problem at all until I needed the washing machine repairing. The repair guy asked me to remove the tumble dryer so he could fix it. It nearly killed me doing it, so I recommend stacking on a fixed shelf so you can pull the washing machine out independently.
