What colour is the dirt on your kitchen floor?

Or rather, what colour floor best hides dirt?
And what colours/finishes should a slattern like myself avoid?

i have black slate lvt and it was a mistake, you can hover and mop it 3 times a day and within 1/2 hour there are bits on it. Looks great for about 25 minutes in a house with 2 fulltime workers and a slothlike teen

Grasses · 20/01/2021 22:22

Get mottled beige / greige 👌 ours is filthy from toddler and you never see it till you've stepped on a cheerio. (I sweep 3 times a day, mop every other day, and wipe under the toddler chair every evening. He's just very efficient at dirtying.)

titan89 · 20/01/2021 22:54

I have a mottled beige too, washed, steamed regularly; yet after I painted the kitchen, I sugar soaped and wire brush scrubbed it tile by tile like never, it was shocking. It has a textured finish however, so if you are a slattern, get smooth, shiny and light coloured.

balzamico · 20/01/2021 23:01

i have yorkshire stone flags - could go weeks between mops and you wouldn't know

ReadingTeaLeaves · 20/01/2021 23:04

We have pale porcelain - have had it for 10 years - and it has been a mistake since week 1. I was talked into it by an interiors person when I was child and pet free. It never looks clean for more than three minutes and I hate it. Something dark and mottled would be my choice if i had the budget to replace.

GeidiPrimes · 20/01/2021 23:17

Brown, thanks to my filthy pets. The living room floor never looks that dirty, and I probably haven't mopped it for a year Blush. Wood is certainly the best concealer of grot and grime.

Beebumble2 · 21/01/2021 07:29

Beige/ grey, riven, mock stone. Already in the house when we bought it. It’s very forgiving and just needs a wipe, but as pp has said every so often it gets a good scrub to clean the indents. Then it becomes a lighter shade!
I’m very careful as there’s electric underfloor heating.
We’re laying a grey patterned repro Victorian tile in our hall, which we think won’t show dirty footprints. It’s smooth so easy to wipe over.

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/01/2021 07:39

We have mottled beige travertine. 15 years or so, it is quite forgiving but would be better if it had a completely smooth / polished finish. The dining half of the room is oak which is much more forgiving. We previously had terracotta , and continue to do so in our weekend house, it needs more up keep .

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 21/01/2021 07:40

Definitely avoid the white, textured tiles that I have in my bathroom. They are disgusting within a day of being mopped, even the mop water collects in the fine grooves and makes them look black 🤮

FTEngineerM · 21/01/2021 07:41

I have grey wooden laminate woody stuff and I can get away with alooooot before I look slovenly

sandieshaw · 21/01/2021 07:42

Pale grey karndean mock stone tiles. It’s pretty good at looking clean.
We had black slate before (from previous owners) and I spent nearly 10 years hating it.
It was constantly dirty and the uneven surface made it a pain to sweep.

Tangledtresses · 21/01/2021 07:43

Karndean flooring in a light brownish wooden effect
I thinks it called rustic

Dogs kids mud gardens, quick sweep haven't mopped for at least a month
Slattern 🤣

rockinaftermidnite · 21/01/2021 07:45

I have terra cotta tiles (they were definitely NOT my choice) and they never look clean because the grouting's gone dark and the tiles have chipped over the years. I hate them.

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 07:46

It’s oak, honestly you don’t really see the dirt.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/01/2021 07:47

We've got Amtico in a grey/beige wood effect. Dirt does not show up. Worst mistake I ever made, in a previous house, was to have funky lino in my bathroom. It was white with jazzy colours - looked cool, showed every speck of dust/towel fluff/scuffs!

larrythelizard · 21/01/2021 07:49

We have white Matt tiles on some of it and they show ALL the dirt - don't do it!

Lunaballoon · 21/01/2021 07:55

Engineered oak planks. They’re extremely forgiving. I sweep/vacuum when I see crumbs etc around the food prep/dining area but otherwise I only give it a once over with the steam cleaner a couple of times a year 🤷‍♀️

TinyGringotts · 21/01/2021 08:01

I'd echo the PP who has pale grey woos effect laminate. It's extremely forgiving.

TheMandalorian · 21/01/2021 08:04

Wood effect vinyl, an oak type Its very forgiving. I can forget to mop for a week and not notice.

BlackDogBlues · 21/01/2021 08:05

Don’t get shiny white. What was I thinking?

We had charcoal Karen dean with a white motley effect in previous house....lots of traffic, mopped it once a week or so....

ThePricklySheep · 21/01/2021 08:07

Our oak only shows very muddy paw prints. Apart from that I only mop it because I feel I should not because it looks dirty.

ShakespearesSisters · 21/01/2021 08:15

I have some light grey 60x60 tiles from tile giant in our kitchen/family room. They have a slight sheen as they are the ones suitable for a wet room. I had visions of the kids running and slipping over on shinny tiles. Unless I drop something like pasta sauce/gravy etc, which you would expect to see and just gets spot wiped, general dirt doesn't seem to show. I just sweep daily and use a spray mop maybe once a week. It gets a proper clean, grout scrubbed and use of traditional mop and bucket probably every 6 weeks. I will admit they do look a little lighter after a proper clean.

Gazelda · 21/01/2021 08:16

We've got dark grey stone which is perfect for camouflaging the grime.

I have the same.
bookmarket · 21/01/2021 08:23

Grey engineered wood. It's great. I rarely mop. I don't have little children so it's only people's feet that touch the floor. It gets swept every otgrr day, hoovered once a week. I sponge off obvious spillage stains but it never looks dirty.
