Anyone live in Rugby? Considering a move there. Any thoughts please?

Live 25 minutes away and go there regularly for a standing appointment. On my surface viewing I think it’s a beautiful little town and seems to have some lovely ares. I’ve eaten out there and there seem to be a good choice of restaurants and the independent shops look good as well as a good retail park slightly out of town. Limited knowledge though.

Thanks @LazyDoll Smile

Anyone else in the area? Schools? Entertainment? Friendly people?

I have family connections in Rugby.

It is a nice town with a couple of huge developments - Cawston is the nicer one. It's not as charming as Leamington Spa (but cheaper).

Lots of nice villages around.

Entertainment - decent bars, cafes etc, a cinema at the retail park but not sure if there's anything else.

Primary schools pretty good, depending on where you are. Secondary schools - they still have the 11 plus system and their grammar schools are excellent.

Biscuits25 · 20/01/2021 07:33

We live here! It's a nice little place. Dunchurch is the most expensive part, then Hillmorton and Bilton. Cawston and Houlton are new developments. Brownsover is meant to be a bit rough but I've got a friend with family over there and she says it's fine! Traffic can be a bit bad down that end though due to the shops at Elliots Field

Porridgeoat · 20/01/2021 07:34

Mixed feelings about rugby. Leamington spa is nice though

VanillaSpiceCandle · 20/01/2021 12:01

The town centre has the most expensive, oldest and largest houses but there are some cheaper areas. It’s far more expensive in general than Bilton. Brownsover has some nice parts but there are worse areas everywhere. I’d personally avoid New Bilton and older parts of Brownsover.

Schools are excellent with secondary state much, much better than Leamington and Warwick.

Hi
I'm moving to Rugby in a few weeks from London - rent first with the aim of buying. I'm thinking about Long Lawford - any thoughts, otherwise with other areas (apart from those mentioned) might be good?

Pottedpalm · 06/05/2021 21:38

Gosh, I’m amazed that a pp thinks Rugby state schools are better than Warwick and Leam!
The heart of Rugby has been ripped out and replaced with trading estates along the Leicester Rd to the motorway. Traffic along there is horrendous, with many goods vehicles. The town centre now has charity shops, takeaways and phone shops. The area round Rugby school is nice, and down towards Dunchurch. Cawston estates are massive.

Lots of nice villages around Rugby. For secondary you have two excellent grammar schools and Princethorpe College ( independent) has buses from most areas.
Allthereindeersaregirls · 06/05/2021 21:47

Bits are. The villages on the outskirts are quite nice. The town centre is small. As with all places it has bad areas. Ryton on dunsmore and Stratton on dunsmore are quite nice. Knightlow primary school has a good reputation.

Allthereindeersaregirls · 06/05/2021 21:50

As an aside, rugby school used to have the most impractical girls uniform. Every time I drove past the school (I had a placement at the hospital) I used to wonder how they managed up and downstairs!

Pearl97 · 06/05/2021 21:52

@Allthereindeersaregirls the long skirts?!

Allthereindeersaregirls · 06/05/2021 21:57
@Allthereindeersaregirls the long skirts?!
Yes. I quite like them, I just think they seem really impractical! Whenever I saw them they were holding them up like the heroin of a period novel.

Allthereindeersaregirls · 06/05/2021 22:00

Obviously I mean heroine!

Pottedpalm · 06/05/2021 22:03

I think they have a new uniform but voted to keep the skirts. I’m told they like to wear their pyjamas underneath 🙂

Pearl97 · 06/05/2021 22:04

They somehow seemed longer than they should be? Like they would trip over!

Allthereindeersaregirls · 06/05/2021 22:05

Yes. Lots I saw swept on the floor.
ArnottsUnderpass · 06/05/2021 22:07

Wouldn't say the schools are better than Warwick or Leamington.

The Harris, Bilton Grange? Or are you talking about the Grammars (which are in S Warks too?)

AnnaBegins · 06/05/2021 22:12

We live in a small village nearby. I quite like it as a town, has some nice restaurants. I'd agree that Leamington is nicer but also £££. Rugby has some good shops, and loads of pretty surrounding villages with pubs etc.
State schools in rugby are the best in the area and competitive to get into. Particularly because the Daventry schools are so bad. There are also grammar and private schools.
There are nice little places like swimworks which is a private swimming pool doing lessons only, so nice if you have younger kids.
Pretty places for walks locally like Ryton pools and Draycote water.
Great train connection to London!

OldRugbeian · 06/05/2021 22:20

As a former pupil at Rugby, I think the official length for the skirts was supposed to be 4 inches above the ankle bone! But for whatever reason, full length became the norm, often ground sweeping.

I quite liked them, and with hindsight they had the added bonus that you never had to worry about how fat your legs looked. One less thing for teenage angst to deal with.

Gardenista · 07/05/2021 17:07

Rugby doesn’t have a good reputation - locally the nickname is drug- by. Due to the deprivation and drug issues. If you can’t stretch to Leamington prices then maybe look at Warwick?

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 07/05/2021 17:54

Rugby should be a million times nicer and more popular than it is, given the history, transport links and great schools. Sadly it does have a significant drug problem (as do some of the villages around) and it all feels a bit hopeless and depressing there really.

MrsScavo · 07/05/2021 18:11

Rugby really doesn't deserve the nn Drugby - I raised three teens here with no drug issues.

The Rugby School skirts are still long - in the past few weeks I've noticed girls are wearing tartan PJ bottoms under their floor length skirts.

Rugby is amazing value for money house wise. If I could afford to live in Leamington I would. Leamington has much better shops. Rugby town center is really struggling.

Yes there are two outstanding grammar schools, but they are super selectives. If I were moving to the town I would go for the Ashlawn catchment area, it's a excellent bilateral school and you could live within walking distance of the station and be in London in under an hour. Overall you've got a good choice of schools and houses at a very reasonable price, with good access links to other parts of the country.

Don't move here if you like the seaside, though. It's very, very far from the sea. Grin

MrsScavo · 07/05/2021 18:14

My DC have lots of friends in Leamington, and there are just as many, if not more, drugs flying around there.

ArnottsUnderpass · 07/05/2021 18:22

Warwick isn't cheaper than Leamington.....
