What do you think of these wooden ceilings and the house in general?

We are looking to buy our first house. We have not been in UK for very long and have never owned a house. Will really appreciate your inputs on this house? The wood ceilings look very odd to me. What do you all think? I wouldn't like to keep it that way. What do you think of the house as well?

Thanks a lot.

Not my style house (I like period or supermodern) but just paint the ceiling white if you don't like them. They were trendy in the 70s.

CaraDuneRedux · 15/01/2021 22:11

Wow! Very 70s! I wonder if they're original.

Not my taste but it does, strangely, feel almost in-period for the house. The huge picture windows are great, and again, very 70s. The split level bit also feels very much of its period (though actually I suspect it's a later extension). Normally I'd avoid this sort of house like the plague, but strangely, I quite like this one (not sure about the ceilings though).

With the right decor and furniture, you might get away with it. Think retro 60s and 70s rather than vast poofy 80s sofas and chairs as they have, and the pink carpet would have to go.

Quite cheap for close to Caversham as well, for that size of house, I'd have thought.

hamstersarse · 15/01/2021 22:14

I think I'd rip them out. If location and everything else is right, it's not a huge deal

toomuchlikemyusername · 15/01/2021 22:21

I think they look great. With the right decor and furnishings, you could create a super cool look.

Clymene · 15/01/2021 22:23

I think it looks great. It's not a bad part of Reading and it's a really flexible space you could do loads with. Near good schools too and not far from the station.

And yes, get rid of the sauna ceilings

Doffodils · 15/01/2021 22:25

They are unusual but I quite like them.

NataliaOsipova · 15/01/2021 22:25

A bit 70s/80s and not to my taste. But it’s a minor cosmetic thing that could easily be rectified.

Brewupmama · 15/01/2021 22:27

I've name changed as I recognise this house. It's a lovely area and I like the house too

Cactusowl · 15/01/2021 22:27

The ceilings look really oppressive to me but a coat of white paint would vastly improve them. The house looks a good size.

Nooo! White paint on the wood would ruin them. Either leave them or replace them but I'd leave them.
Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 15/01/2021 22:29

Wow, love the wooden ceilings- I think they might be original; if so, please don’t paint over them!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 15/01/2021 22:33

I don't mind the tongue and groove ceilings but it wouldn't cost too much to remove them or cover them.

I very much dislike that horrible extension stuck on the side though.

Labobo · 15/01/2021 22:34

I love the 1970s house but am not so keen on the wooden ceilings. Think I'd get rid of them or at least paint them. But the space and light are great!

Hotcuppatea · 15/01/2021 22:35

I don't mind them in the living areas but it looks a bit oppressive in the bedroom.

I love that open plan, split level vibe. It reminds me of the houses I grew up in the 70s.

parietal · 15/01/2021 22:35

Those ceilings would be great with some scandi decor and a whole 70s look

Cactusowl · 15/01/2021 22:36

I think white wooden would look nice with natural coloured wooden floors like in this picture.

Yes. I actually think the ceilings are quite special and should be kept. The carpeting looks faded and I am not a fan of the color, but there is good light and it seems very family friendly.
c75kp0r · 16/01/2021 03:46

I could lie looking up at that all day - and I assume it is easy to take care of.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/01/2021 03:48

The ceilings are fairly easy to remedy. Its actually the kitchen that would put me off as its too small for a table.

c75kp0r · 16/01/2021 03:49

The whole house is lovely - so much space and massive windows

c75kp0r · 16/01/2021 03:56

I'd imagine in most houses in towns would be smaller than that kitchen though? round here they are teeny compared to that kitchen not that I see anyone's kitchen nowadays :)

CuppaZa · 16/01/2021 03:57

The house could be so stylish - with the ceilings! I’m not a fan of wooden ceilings generally, however I’ve seen many, many of these larger 70’s houses which have been done really stylishly and kept the wooden ceilings...so there must be a reason why people decide to keep them. In the houses I’ve seen, they’ve done the decor in such a way that is modern, but with a slight 70’s retro twist. Either that, or a scandi vibe, as pp said.
The house is spacious, great living area. Garden not too big from what I can see? That’s the only thing that would put me off, as I’d want to build an extension to make a larger kitchen, without losing the dining area.

user127819 · 16/01/2021 04:30

I do find them a bit odd but the house is otherwise very nice so I probably wouldn't let it put me off completely.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/01/2021 04:34

I actually quite like them, not so much in the bedroom. That’s is a whole lot of house for the money, it appears to have a wonderful sense of space with some work it could be fabulous.

garlictwist · 16/01/2021 04:39

I love that! Really like boxy 70s stuff and the ceilings are ace.
