What do you think of these wooden ceilings and the house in general?

We are looking to buy our first house. We have not been in UK for very long and have never owned a house. Will really appreciate your inputs on this house? The wood ceilings look very odd to me. What do you all think? I wouldn't like to keep it that way. What do you think of the house as well?

Thanks a lot.

@userxx well no obviously not but the knots (not knotholes, I know now after googling) can leak something. I don’t want to say sap because I don’t think that’s it.

I think it is a 60s house, not 70s.

FAQs · 16/01/2021 10:37

Goodness it’s awful, could be nice with a lot of money spent on it.

MrTrellis · 16/01/2021 10:39

I love the house and the wooden ceilings. Please don’t buy it and rip them out or paint them. That would be like nailing plywood to a Victorian door.
I’d go for cork floors over wooden.
Lovely.

Stinginthetail · 16/01/2021 10:43

My sister's house had these on the ceiling and she had them painted white. Looks nice. I love the house btw I live in a Victorian house but like the more modern style too.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2021 10:44

I expected to hate them but I don't. I think it's the angles that make it look OK.

The carpets and furnishings are what is making it look bad I think. The kitchen can easily be opened out to the dining room or maybe even moved there with the kitchen becoming a utility room.

I think it's resin. You paint over the knots with knotting.

(See, dad, I did listen!)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/01/2021 10:47

Ah that's a proper house. Just like all the houses looked like when I was growing up!

BruceAndNosh · 16/01/2021 10:53

The bit to the side is definitely an extension, and that's where the wooden ceilings are. I suspect the wooden ceilings were put in the extension to add to the mid century look.
I find them a bit oppressive but if they were stripped back to a paler matt look they would look more Scandi and less sauna.
It's a lot of house for the money in that area, shame neither of the bathrooms are en suite.
Downside is very small garden because of the extension

banivani · 16/01/2021 11:34

Resin! That’s the word! Have no brain today!

SollaSollew · 16/01/2021 12:04

I love it including the ceilings, the split level and the vaulted ceiling bit. As others have said it could look amazing with some money spent on it. Personally I’d probably try to strip the ceilings back and use a Danish white oil rather than paint them but that’s just my preference. You’d end up with a really individual home.

Maybe take a look at the houses for sale via The Modern House for some inspiration of what it could become.

JaninaDuszejko · 16/01/2021 12:15

shame neither of the bathrooms are en suite

That's an advantage as far as I'm concerned, I hate en suites. Much more sensible with this layout to have two bathrooms accessible to everyone.

lboogy · 16/01/2021 12:17

Crazy what you get for the money outside London. It's a lovely house with lots of potential

HensInTheSkirtingBoard · 16/01/2021 12:20

Love it. It does need some money spent on it but there's something absolutely lovely about that split-level lounge-diner set up. The carpets need to go obviously but all that light and space is fabulous.

Like others it's reminding me of houses from my childhood - one in particular owned by friends of my parents who always seemed terribly glamorous were probably swingers

wowfudge · 16/01/2021 12:25

It's resin that can come out of knots in the wood - treat with knotting or a blocking primer before painting.

Those wooden ceilings could be concealing artex which, at worst, may contain asbestos. Worth asking the owners about them, via the EA if necessary and asking whether they were put up to cover original ceilings. Also worth noting that sometimes a wooden ceiling may have put up because insulation was needed and it may be covering insulation material.

Whatam · 16/01/2021 12:35

Thanks a lot everyone. Really appreciate all your inputs. We understand that we will have to change the carpets. The kitchen is smaller than we would like. But the wooden ceilings looked like a bit much for us. It's a large house though which we love. Really nice to know everyone's perspectives.

It's the carpet that's the problem IMO.

AzraiL · 16/01/2021 13:05

Cross post!

[quote showmethegin]Not fussed from the outside but I'm a sucker for 70s style and a renovation project! Reminds me of this house now off the market that I fell in love with

That house is amazing, and although I prefer less clutter, it looks like the vendors were really interesting people with all those books and the general vibe!

And the garden is awesome!

MrTrellis · 16/01/2021 14:04

If you do buy it @Whatam and put down cork flooring I’d love to see it? I wouldn’t mind seeing wooden either but cork would be drool worthy!

scentedgeranium · 16/01/2021 15:50

Retro! You could embrace it all out with retro furniture.
I don't dislike them. You could always live with them and see. Stuff like that is sortable.
The house generally looks spacious. And I like the garden
