I've had my eye on a property for a while but I've realised it's in band F! So I think I'll have to write that one off
Just asking out of interest really .

@WombatChocolate

I think the figures vary a lot depending in whether you have a Tory or Labour council. Labour are likely to spend more heavily on services and result in higher tax at the upper end.

I've always wondered why we pay over 10 and not 12 months. It's fine, but I wonder why.

Gives council tax admin 2 months to collect in what is owed for that financial year. I used to work in CTax as we in the biz would call it.

If you pay weekly it is usually 40 weeks.

The thing with council tax is if you are struggling to clear the year you are in, the next year's payment rolls round in April and is higher meaning you can end up paying 2 years at once, sort of. The power that they have to collect the monies in directly from your salary etc, means pay what you can even if you cannot pay the monthly amount in full. It is a tax, just collected locally.

If anyone struggles, contact them immediately. We would bend over backwards to help everyone try to get it under control. Honestly, we were lovely.

I am in a band E which is £2000 a year. On the Council Tax website there is a marker if you have improved your home (granted planning or there are building regs on your property) and it is marked for re-banding when we move. It may go up to an F. Glad I won't be here to have to pay that Grin

Band B £1323. Scotland so includes water.

Begonias · 15/01/2021 17:44

Band E £2300 going up by 5% in April 😤

bluepie · 15/01/2021 18:29

@WombatChocolate our council gives the option to pay in full, over 10 or 12 months.

Comps83 · 15/01/2021 19:29

So with council tax are you allowed to pay a lump sum at the start of the year to lower your monthly payments or is it pay all or pay monthly ?

BentBastard · 15/01/2021 20:49

As standard monthly is over 10 months (you don't pay Feb and March) but I think you can arrange to pay over 12 months instead.

You can pay as a lump sum instead, in fact I think they make you do that if you fail to keep up with instalments.

BentBastard · 15/01/2021 20:49

To add, paying a lump sum instead of monthly doesn't change how much you owe.

Weirdlynormal · 15/01/2021 21:46

£3016 Band G

SweatyBetty20 · 15/01/2021 21:52

£2410 band E - Oldham. I get a single persons allowance as I live on my own but it’s fucking expensive.

tanguero · 15/01/2021 22:02

YOUR Council tax is based on 'what your property would have sold for on the open market on April 1st 1991 (April 1, 2003 Wales) - even if , it has been built since then.

It is clearly time there was a revaluation - in which there will be winners and losers. Some properties will have increased in value (relative to others), some will have declined in value (relative to others).
We ought to be grown up enough to say, 'ok, fair enough, it's time that we did it'. But, no political party will have the courage to propose it, as the 'losers' (inevitably) will make far more fuss, than the 'winners'.

Would you vote for any proposal that might increase your Council Tax relative to your neighbours ?

Fiddlersgreen · 15/01/2021 22:10

Band D - £ 1,871

tanguero · 15/01/2021 22:22

Rural properties tend to be undervalued (relative to others) - because the valuation was a rushed job, and the estate agents who (by and large), were entrusted with the task, didn't have the time to look at isolated rural properties - even if they had, their valuation would have been based on a drive by external view.
Time for a valuation based on 2021 values !

Band A £71 p.m. West Yorkshire

No, you can pay however you like. Some years we pay it as a lump sum, some years over the 10 months, in general I try & get it cleared in 6- 8 months so we have a bit extra for Christmas & the new year. You can write to/call them & ask to pay over 12 months. Councils don't care as long as it's paid.
Chewbecca · 16/01/2021 11:41

G £2,930 which we pay monthly over 10 months.

Chewbecca · 16/01/2021 11:43

Although now I am wondering if we are H at £3,520! Will have to see if we get a payment break or not.

NoParticularPattern · 16/01/2021 12:01

Band G £3225. Will be over £3500 this year I think!

Asdf12345 · 16/01/2021 12:22

Ours is about £3k a year. Fantastically good value when you think of what gets delivered for it versus my parents who pay £5k across residential and water rates combined.

Qc16 · 16/01/2021 13:27

@HavfrueDenizKisi

Band H - around £3200
Depends on the borough - where I live in London Band H is only £1647

Qc16 · 16/01/2021 13:37

@Qc16
