What kitchen worktop do you have?

And would you buy it again?

We're trying to choose a worktop for the kitchen in our new house. Currently there's a mix of wood, granite and stainless steel.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choices! We had wood in our last house and I found it a pain to keep oiled. Granite feels a bit heavy and cold to me. There seem so many new materials I've never heard of! Just wondered what other people have?

Great question! We have bought oak in two previous houses, love the look but found it a pain to look after. Our current house has corian, which I would never have chosen but is absolutely rocket proof. New kitchen will have corian round the sink and cooler and iroko on the island.

Scaredykittycat · 11/01/2021 08:07

We had laminate first, then real wood, now corian.

I would never have wood again.

Laminate is ok but corian I love as it looks great as well. I’d definitely have it again. It was recommended by our fitter who I trust 100%.

LongIslandIcedT · 11/01/2021 08:10

Solid oak, I love it. It gets oiled every 6 months and still looks like new.

SollaSollew · 11/01/2021 09:24

We have a white marble style quartz. This is the second time I've had quartz so definitely would. It's very hard wearing, easy to clean , you can put hot pans directly on it and doesn't require any specific maintenance.

we went for duropal carrera marble pattern laminate as ours was a lower end price kitchen 3k i didnt want to spend as much again on posh worktops, have to say im impressed with it

I'm considering this myself. Ceramic is the latest revelation apparently but I can't recommend as I haven't gone ahead yet. Looks really good though.

I've got off white Quartz, with very subtle grey striations though it like marble.

Like in the main picture here: www.graniteearth.co.uk/

(Good company, btw).

NWnature · 11/01/2021 11:58

I got granite, timeless and I think it looks and feels luxurious 👌

I have a pale quartz in my kitchen, it's a no - brand clone of Compac "Snow". It's so pretty and seems to suit most kitchen cabinets/decor styles - it's a white background with different size flecks of light neutral colours (greys, beiges and browns).

It's easy to clean and maintenance free (unlike previous wood worktops) and because of the flecks, it doesn't seem to show most stains or marks very easily either (could be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view!)

Titsywoo · 11/01/2021 22:50

We have black quartz - I love it although unless you are happy to clean and buff it everyday you are better off with something like grey as black is a bit unforgiving.

PresentingPercy · 12/01/2021 00:17

Granite in both of our houses. Wouldn’t have anything else. Still beautiful after 12 and 10 years and no maintenance needed. I have quartz in a flat. Seems ok. DD1 has solid surface from John Lewis. It’s a templates worktop and not cheap. Looks amazing though. Needs better care than granite but it’s less expensive. They can also wrap it round Island units.

Smallgoon · 12/01/2021 01:40

White marbled quartz. Adds a luxurious touch to the kitchen. Very happy with it.

Mumek · 12/01/2021 02:01

I've had my very pale cream Corian worktop for 8 years now and it's still like new. Requires no upkeep and I wouldn't have anything else now.

butterry · 12/01/2021 02:13

We have a white calacatta gold quartz, the background is very white with large bold veining. I didn't like carrara as it's very grey and can look mottled/blotchy. I preferred the clear veining of calacatta. The very white background is amazing and brightens the whole kitchen. If you decide to go for a light quartz, get some samples and test them out for staining with turmeric.

Marchitectmummy · 12/01/2021 02:18

Ours is marble, which is brilliant for making pastry but it does need to be resealed every 6 months to 1 year.

krustykittens · 12/01/2021 02:34

Plain white Corian. It's fantastic, very hard wearing, bounces loads of light around the kitchen and if it does get chipped, very easy to repair myself.

alecguinnessgenuineclass · 12/01/2021 07:12

Wow, really interesting responses! Thank you. I'm off to look up corian...

Quartz sounds interesting. I love the look of pale marble but worry about the staining. We are not very good at wiping down our counter tops, although perhaps we'll get better at it once we've forked out some money on them!

I ruined my mums laminate as a teenager by putting a hot pan on it Blush

White quartz with a subtle vein. We have had it for two years and nothing has stained it yet, including turmeric and red wine.

Toomanycats99 · 12/01/2021 07:33

White quartz with veining like marble. I'm not great at cleaning.

I have to say stuff seems to disappear.....I will look like it's stained and then I give a clean and can still see a little bit but then it seems to just go by itself......

billybagpuss · 12/01/2021 07:36

We’ve got quartz and I love it, I love the look of wood but so many friends that have it have have had problems, especially with mould around the taps.

alecguinnessgenuineclass · 12/01/2021 08:39

@isseys4xmastinselcats that's a beautiful worktop, I would never have guessed it was laminate!

Black granite, it makes the kitchen look very high end, nothing comes close in terms of that depth of sheen and it’s very easy to look after. Doesn’t stain, easy to keep clean and you can shove hot stuff right on there, since it’s rock that’s thousands of years old and nothing impacts it.

Kottbullar · 12/01/2021 08:54

We've got quartz, I'd definitely choose it again.
Ours is light coloured as the units are very dark. It's easy to clean and looks fantastic.

Following, I'm drawn towards the bright retro Formica counters from the likes of Plykea at the moment.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 12/01/2021 09:07

@alecguinnessgenuineclass We have pale quartz top. We've had black granite in our two previous kitchens but wanted something lighter. Chose quartz over granite as it doesn't stain. Even the turmericy oil from the indian takeaway doesn't leave a mark.
