What kitchen worktop do you have?

And would you buy it again?

We're trying to choose a worktop for the kitchen in our new house. Currently there's a mix of wood, granite and stainless steel.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choices! We had wood in our last house and I found it a pain to keep oiled. Granite feels a bit heavy and cold to me. There seem so many new materials I've never heard of! Just wondered what other people have?

I have laminate and will have the same again.
I am not in the property value or income bracket to afford anything else.

@isseys4xmastinselcats please can I quiz you about your worktop?
It looks beautiful in your photo and I have a sample which shows lovely grey veining. But online searches bring up a few photos that look like the veins are actually black which might not work for me. Please can you say if there is much/any black on your worktops?

Just had mine installed a week ago and love it. It dekton aura which is white with a vein. Love it, it is bullet proof, cant see smearsor streaks which i had in the past with white worktops and looks lovely. Is stain proof whilst i believe quartz is stain resistant, can put hot pan down on it, which is a great for me ( i will try not too though). Only drawback is possible chipping if you whack a corner.

Quartz - white with grey/ mirror glass inclusions.

Love it. Bounces light around. Is easy to care for and great for baking on.

It has stained a little round the sink where rusty baking trays dripped. But turmeric (an issue for my friend's marble worktop) hasn't stained it.

Loads of my acquaintances have it (I'm in a food facebook group and notice the worktops when people post pictures of food they have cooked. Yes, I know this makes me slightly tragic....)

opinionatedfreak · 12/01/2021 18:30

I had been going to go for concrete gris but loved the mirror inclusions. They really brighten up my dark kitchen which has no natural light.

pistachioicecream · 12/01/2021 18:33

We have Dekton and love it. Indestructible, heat proof, stain proof and needs no looking after!

ouchmyfeet · 12/01/2021 18:50

We have black quartz and love it. It is cold but very low maintenance. I would never have wood again

alecguinnessgenuineclass · 12/01/2021 19:10

What does Dekton feel like? Is it warm/cold, smooth or textured? I can't tell from the pictures.

I have marble in my current kitchen, it feels hard and durable and looks great, was a reasonable ish price too!

Californiabakes · 12/01/2021 19:51

We’ve had grey corian for 15 years and it still looks amazing.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 12/01/2021 19:54

@FrogFairy we got ours from DIY kitchens and no its grey and white no black in it

isseys4xmastinselcats · 12/01/2021 19:57

sorry just went and had a closer look it is a mixture of black grey and white but not overly black so its more emphasis on the grey in a long run

Echobelly · 12/01/2021 19:58

DH insisted on wood. I begged him not to, I told him we were far too slovenly to look after it and it would go horrible within a few years because we are not neat, tidy people. I reluctantly agreed on the proviso the regular oiling was his job and his alone.

Of course he never oiled it enough initially, and has never done it enough since, and it's covered in marks and going white around the taps after 3 years. In desperation I even did oil it myself once, but it looked so horrible and smeary I was too traumatised to do it again.

DH recently agreed we shouldn't have wood again. For my money it's sod all use as a worktop it's so fragile, unless you never cook in your kitchen or keep it immaculately clean and oil it like clockwork.

Earlybird00 · 12/01/2021 20:02

We have black granite and choose 20mm thickness instead of 30mm. I really love the finish

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 12/01/2021 20:08

Only drawback is possible chipping if you whack a corner.

Rounded corners are definitely the way to go - partly because we have small people running g around but also because PILs managed to chip a corner of their quartz when it was only a few months old.

FrogFairy · 12/01/2021 20:14

isseys4xmastinselcats Thank you. I can happily live with a few odd black bits here and there among the mostly grey veining.

Humphriescushion · 12/01/2021 20:15

Would say my dekton feels warm not cold like granite which is what i had before. Slightly mottled to touch not completely smooth. Mine is the matt dekton not the glossy so dont know if that is different.

BringPizza · 12/01/2021 20:26

We have oak, not popular on here but I like it. We oil it twice a year and it cleans up nicely. Second choice would have been Corian but DH wasn't keen. I don't like the sparkly bits in granite-type tops, I think they look really naff, and it would put me off buying a house.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 12/01/2021 20:27

We've got quartz and it's bloody marvellous. 3 years and 2 small children later there's not a mark on it.

We've got the black one with flecks and mirror bits in it from IKEA. I love the sparkles, it doesn't stain, and it doesn't have smears all over it after wiping down. My parents have a dark granite worktop and they're forever buffing it to get rid of smears.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 12/01/2021 21:06

We have Unistone quartz in white with a grey vein. I love it. It is still perfect after three years and has never stained. Do get rounded corners, though.

mumsy27 · 13/01/2021 02:47

what's the cost difference of corian vs quartz, granite.
looking to change doors and worktop.
is it worth it?

LoveFall · 13/01/2021 03:22

We also have granite, a very light toned one. We picked the thinner edge as the thicker seemed heavy to me. Very happy with it after 5 plus years.

We have a similar light coloured quartz in our bathrooms, also happy.

After a lifetime of formica or laminate, which is not hear resistant, I am happy. I once put a hot pan down by accident on my laminate counter and it was ruined. Doesn't happen now.

Dinosauraddict · 13/01/2021 03:25

We've got quartz and I love it. Previously had corian and would happily have that again. Detest laminate - looks cheap and is very unforgiving. Like the look of wood but never had it because the maintenance and potential for damp/rotting around taps etc has always put me off.

SnowWouldHelp · 13/01/2021 09:46

Has anyone got the solid laminate or coloured corian?

Imiss2019 · 13/01/2021 10:22

@SnowWouldHelp

Has anyone got the solid laminate or coloured corian?
Yes we had it fitted last year. Really pleased with it
Imiss2019 · 13/01/2021 10:22
