Are grey tiles going out of fashion?

So I have Victorian patterned floor tiles in my bathroom, and I had decided on white metro tiles on the walls however I have these in both my other bathrooms so I want something different. I want tiles that will contrast slightly to the white bath, sink, toilet etc. I found these which I like, but I know those all grey everything houses were the rage a few years ago and seem to be dying out in favour of colour and pattern which I am all for. So, are these tiles a bad choice? Has grey had its moment?

Disclaimer* This isn't my photo, I found it on Facebook when looking for photos of the tiles I liked.

There are so few “bathroom colours” in the first instance (generally the choices are white or various shades of greys, stones, or muted greens and blues) that I don’t think grey in a bathroom will date in quite the same way as grey kitchens, furniture and paintwork.

Plus if you like it, who cares? Grey is popular for a reason - lots of people obviously think it looks good in their home. Go with what you like and as long as you didn’t choose it because you like to be on trend then you’ll be fine.

PubicMenace · 08/01/2021 16:10

Oh goodness the grey thing is so over. I mean, obviously if you like grey then go for it, but it could hardly be duller when there are so many beautiful bathroom tiles available yellow, pink, teal, square, rectangle, hexagonal etc etc

We have a coloured pattern floor and a blue herringbone tiled bath panel, so I was hoping that would be enough to get away with grey tiles! White blends in with the sink etc too much and I don't think I can get away with another colour! Why did Mrs Hinch have to ruin grey for the rest of us! Grin

Good point, thank you!

This is the grey stone tiles edited with our floor and we will have navy accessories/towels so hopefully it won't look bland! Thank you Smile

Depends how much you care. IMO those tiles are very dated (they pre date the subway trend) but if you like them then get them.

Daisydoesnt · 08/01/2021 20:47

OP I don't think those grey wall tiles go with your floor tiles at all. Sorry

margotsdevil · 08/01/2021 20:52

I liked the grey tiles but now I've seen your floor (which is fab!) I think you either need to match a colour to that - might be too dark - or stick to plain white, sorry!

RocketSipp · 08/01/2021 20:56

I love them together and I'm not ashamed Grin

There is a grey part in the design, it looks more pale blue in this photo but is a similar light grey in person. I think they tie in well together Smile white tiles everything just blends into one and I think it too clinical in a fully tiled room. My other bathrooms are half tiled with white tiles and I don't mind that as I can paint above, but I needed some contrast in here

I think more is more. Go with what you love.

I like the floor tiles and I like the wall tiles, although I am not a fan of grey in general.....but I don't think the styles of the floor and wall tiles match.

I think you need a solid colour wall tile - so go for grey if that is the contrast you are after, but not those tiles.

Perhaps a grey metro with a navy border?

RocketSipp · 08/01/2021 22:06

Thanks. I do think I'm going to stick with them though. Blush

I guess I didn't answer your question really.

Grey is no better or worse than magnolia. It's neutral, calming, and safe.

Personally, I think it is dull when placed throughout a house and it's rather odd especially given the British love of moaning about depressing grey days outside.

I do think however, in places like bathrooms, where tiles are far more permanent, it provides a good background colour to work with, and works nicely with white suites. It can also as you have shown, be suitable for both modern classic period properties.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/01/2021 22:26

I love your floor tiles.

I love LOVE my large grey floor & wall tiles. 7 years ive had them now & I still love them.

I can't stand any form of beige

I'm still renovating the house & the walls wiil be white grey & possibly some dark blue & possibly pale pink in my bedrooms

I hate green which is supposedly in the 'in' colour & hate busy wallpaper

I don't give a flying fuck what some rude MNers have to say about grey 🤣.

whataboutbob · 08/01/2021 22:38

I think so many people invested in the grey trend that grey decor threads ( is it over or not?) are at risk of getting emotional right now.

Bluesheep8 · 09/01/2021 08:46

I don't think the wall tiles go with the floor, sorry. The wall tiles look modern and the floor looks traditional. Personally I think metro tiles would look better with that floor but that's just my opinion.

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 09/01/2021 08:59

Yes Grey is definitely the new beige. Grey feels quite cold, but also clean, calm and neutral. Beige always makes me think of nicotine stains so seems a bit grubby to me so I prefer grey, but it is warm, calm and neutral. Navy blue is obviously going to be the next big thing, it's been in kitchens for a while and now becoming a big bathroom and bedroom trend. I like navy blue more than grey or beige. I think navy with grey is a nice mix. And I always prefer a pattern tile. Although that style does seem a bit dated?

Daisydoesnt · 09/01/2021 09:35

Its not that colour that is the problem OP it’s that the styles don’t go together. As a PP has said you have a Victorian style floor tile, and then what looks like a stone effect tile on the walls. That doesn’t work, even though the colours sit together in theory. Sorry but you did ask if they are a bad choice!

Is your sanitary ware taps etc in a Victorian style or is it just the tiles you’ve picked out? It’s the mish mash of styles that doesn’t work for me; have a rethink! Look online what other people have paired that style of floor tile with for ideas.

Mapletreelane · 09/01/2021 11:57

Your bathroom....go with what you love and will enjoy and get most pleasure from. X

dinglethedragon · 09/01/2021 13:09

We put grey tiles in our bathroom when we moved in 30yrs ago - still there - I'm sure the new owners (fingers crossed for exchange) will rip them out - but they'll come back in fashion yet again in a few years.

RocketSipp · 09/01/2021 14:12

It's a new build. Only a small bathroom, with modern fixtures. The floor just adds a bit of pattern and colour, I can't see it clashing badly enough to warrant me changing it at this late stage. I still think they look great despite everyone saying they don't BlushGrin

OP posts:
Othering · 09/01/2021 14:15

Love the floor but hate the wall tiles. They're not even a dated trendy grey. They're just cheapest generic builders tiles. I'd personally go white tiles with grey grout for contrast.
