Bathroom Layout - Help! (with diagram)

Help me Oh Designy Mumnsetters

With everything shut, my plan of getting a bathroom showroom place to plan my bathroom has fallen through, and I am having to buy things I can't touch or see online which I'm finding really stressful. But to keep on top of the build schedule, I need to confirm layout by Monday. Is anyone any good at this kind of stuff that would be kind enough to suggest the best layout? I need: A large shower (ideally 1800/90 if possible), a freestanding bath (around 1700) a loo and a decent sized sink area that allows for some surface with side of the basin - so either a basin on a countertop or a basin set in a countertop of vanity unit that has usable space either side. And somewhere - a duel fuel heated towel rail. It's not a massive bathroom and I can't seem to make it all fit.

REALLY rough not-to-scale drawing attached. Any suggestions gratefully received. Only caveat is I'd rather not open the door straight onto the loo if possible.

What about a larger shower then have a Japanese soaking tub for the bath as these have a smaller footprint?

Murinae · 08/01/2021 10:24

Option 1 doesn't look like it leaves enough room to get in comfortably between the bath and shower! Sink under window is good though it means you can't have a mirrored cupboard above it.
Option 2 looks like you won't have room to open the door without banging the bath.

NotMeNoNo · 08/01/2021 10:32

I would put the WC next to the basin in option 1, backing onto the outside wall, and have a slightly smaller shower or one with a cut off corner to allow better space entering the room. No point having large sink and shower if the circulation space in the room is cramped and awkward. You have to work with the proporiotns you have.

Murinae · 08/01/2021 10:51

My Mum has her toilet under the window. Depends how much height you have there. Option 1 with toilet in the right hand corner next to the sink and then the shower like in option 2 would that work? If you have the sliding doors then you would get in on the long side. I prefer the fully closing glass sliding doors as it's not so draughty as the open ones and you don't get water on the floor. The frameless glass ones look really nice.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/01/2021 10:55

If you make the floor a wetroom style you then won't need to worry about stepping past a shower tray as you enter the room.

Yes this one. Having loo and sink together under the window means you can have one integrated unit which give you decent storage and looks a lot sleeker - something like this which is 1.2 metres wide:

And have the shower turned round so it's the same as in option 2.

Just a few comments. You gave drawn a sink 1000 wide? Why? I do have a large ev syute with a very wide sink but you don’t have the space. 650 is fine. You need to set it around 850-900 mm above the floor at the top edge of the sink so can the window accommodate this?

Your shower is 1m wide. It doesn’t need to be. On option 1. It’s also very long. You have no towel rad near the bath or a you exit the shower. You will find this very annoying. It simply isn’t good planning.

PresentingPercy · 08/01/2021 11:23

Option 2 is bizarre. Where is the window and door? Is the towel rail under the window? Confused.

PresentingPercy · 08/01/2021 12:43

Ok. Here’s a go: I’ve allowed 1 m for the door plus architrave . This could be generous. If you had a smaller bath it allows for more space around the loo and the basin. Therefore consider 1700 x700. I’ve compromised on the width of the basin because I’ve allowed for a more luxurious bath. Towel rad is handy for shower but less so for bath. I’ve put the bath taps at the loo end so they are easy to reach. You could have the tap(s) on the side. The sink end means you have to reach past the sink. If you had a smaller shower you could easily fit in more towel storage between the shower and the door.

I’m not a huge fan of a loo opposite the door and you could swap it with the sink. You could have storage above the loo or the sink and definitely get a sink with a vanity unit under.

I'm at the dentist now but am going to go home and try out your suggestions with my bathroom jigsaw. I'll be back!

I read that you said it's all new but where will your pipework go? Where is the toilet soil stack and is the floor solid?

Did you want to sit in the bath and look out the window? (If that's possible, lol)

What kind of shower do you want - enclosed with doors or wetroom style.

Are you having fitted furniture or maybe wall hung toilet and basin?

What kind of shower unit - with rainhead and handheld, digital with controls outside the enclosure...

NotMeNoNo · 08/01/2021 17:50

The thing with the walk in showers is they have a fixed screen at one end, so you could put it next to the bath like this.

Why don’t you just do a virtual design thing with Wickes or someone similar? You measure up they will do the design and email it to uou then talk you through it,

PresentingPercy · 08/01/2021 19:00

You can put the screen there but you’ll never clean it! Just impossible!

PresentingPercy · 08/01/2021 19:01

Or even a bathroom designer/shop a bit above Wickes.

SlightlyJaded · 08/01/2021 19:10

There is some brilliant advice on here - thank you. I KNEW I could count on MN. I've tried lots of configurations and I was leaning towards something like yours @NotMeNoNo although I don't know if the bath/shower is too tight.

I've managed to get a two hour bathroom design consultation with B&Q tomorrow so I'll see what they suggest. I don't know why I have left it until the last minute - I really don't. I have had the build schedule for the whole of Christmas but I just can't seem to focus on anything properly at the moment.

This thread is proving especially useful for pointing out things I wouldn't have thought of like access to clean the shower screen/option of walk in wetroom vs closed shower etc (still haven't decided but leaning towards wetroom style or one of those frameless thingies).

@sbplanet. Reading your list of questions, I realise I really don't know what i want. I am someone who likes to touch things and see them 'in reality' so for all my mood boards, powerpoints, magazines and pinterest boards, I really feel lost without being able to 'go to the shops'.

Murinae · 08/01/2021 19:47

@SlightlyJaded I understand though I ended up with online stuff rather than the shop stuff after looking at both. The design service from Wickes was awful. He came to measure up and when we got there he had got our bathroom 20 cm wider than it is! He was insisting we could have a 1700 shower when the room is only 1500 wide

bouncydog · 08/01/2021 20:01

Similar size to ours. To the right of the door put in a corner shower 600x900. Then have a purpose built basin unit between the shower and the bath - we managed to put 2 basins in ours with cupboards underneath. Then the loo at the end of the bath. If you put wall hung loo and under basin cupboards then room will look larger. We put a double ended bath with a filler in the middle and for the tap we used a wall mounted shower control at one end - same end as basins for your design - pipe work all hidden behind a tiled panel.

bouncydog · 08/01/2021 20:05

Oh and all the bathroom design centres said it couldn’t be done......

gigi556 · 08/01/2021 20:26

If you really want a separate bath and shower and a large shower at that, have you considered something like the attached?

@bouncydog. That sounds good although it would be a fair downsize on the shower. I've already persuaded DH that going down to 1400 from 1700 will be fine....

Deffo thinking wall hung toilet and storage under basin area. Would love recessed (shallow!!!!) shelves in the shower so another reason for trying to keep it a reasonable size (to accomodate false wall).

Current bath is freestanding with a central filler so yes, this would help.

@Murinae. The B&Q thing has been booked out of desperation regarding the layout. TBH, I don't think I will be buying anything from them. My builder recommended Victoria Plumbing (he said don't go to Victoria Plum or Bathstore) and has written down brands that are reasonably well made. So I'm HOPING that B&Q (and you lot) can solve layout, then I will have to buy things off the shelf on line.

I am in London and if it wasn't for lockdown, I'd honestly consider getting a train to Liverpool just to walk round Victoria Plumbing and also Yorkshire so I could go to DIY Kitchens

I'm currently organising my bathroom layout and have decided to go for something similar to the one in the picture as this is the best way the walk in shower and bath will fit. There are some lovely examples on Pinterest with the shower and bath connected or next to each other, especially with freestanding baths.

Never planned a bathroom but I've heard that offset shower controls are a good idea, especially if you have a rainwater shower head (so you don't get soaked with cold water each time you turn it on).

Also, will you want to open the window? Would having a bath in front of the window be a bit awkward/annoying? Good luck.

Murinae · 08/01/2021 22:01

I thought Victorian Plumbing wasn’t good but Victoria Plum was. We have used Victoria Plum and everything was great.
