Moving - do movers ever disconnect washing machine?

NCHouseBuy · 03/01/2021 11:24

I've got a house move coming up - only 1 day between exchange and completion. 🤔 I don't know how to properly disconnect the washing machine without making a total ballsup of it and spraying water all over the new owner's laundry.

Does anyone know if movers are ever willing to do this, or will I need to call an urgent plumber for a short notice booking on exchange day?

I've already googled the how-to and looked at the plumbing and doing it myself is a non-starter I'm afraid.

Have you asked the movers if they will do it for you? It's a bit extravagant to get a plumber in for such a small job. All you have to do is turn off and disconnect the tap, pull the drain hose out of its drain hole and unplug it, surely?

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 03/01/2021 12:08

It's really, really easy. You need a bucket and a towel. Get a video on YouTube.

The call centre said no - but maybe the movers themselves would?

I did it myself, it is easy but I can only suggest YouTube....and turn your water off first! Call the removal company and ask if they can help of all else fails!

Peridot1 · 03/01/2021 12:15

The movers did ours. They would have connected it back up at the new house too if we wanted.

Already tried that - my set up didn't look the same and I've just got no idea. If a valve is busted I'll have absoutely no clue what to do and the new owners take possession the day after exchange. Not something I'm willing to chance!

Thank you! I wasn't sure if they simply never do it. I'll call again and ask whether my specific movers can do it.

if all else fails, turn the water off at the main stopcock before disconnecting. Leave a VERY LARGE note for the new owners saying what you have done and why, and that they need to check washing machine stopcock or add a bucket before turning water back on.

Thank you! At least this gives me a back up option - I do know where the stopcock is, so that's a start. #pathetic 😂

Post a pic and someone on here will give you instructions specific to you set up.

It's a good thing to learn how to do, you might not know when you'll need to do it again in the future Smile

Pickfords moved ours -- they did everything. We just took the cat.

That's actually who I'm using 😂 🎉 I need to ask again!

Turn off the water supply and unscrew the hose.

Unless some washing machines have a weird complicated set up I've never come across? I disconnected my old one and plumbed my last 2 machines in myself. Also disconnected and cleaned all kinds of filters when it stopped working.

Bluesheep8 · 04/01/2021 07:43

They're not insured to do it though. If water ends up everywhere or the washing machine is damaged, it's not covered.

lomojojo · 04/01/2021 08:16

Oh, er, the thought occurs that they might have just been giving us special help because DH is quadriplegic. We did pay for a full pack, but perhaps they also helped out a bit more. They also put his bed back together first and waited for me to hoist him into it before carrying on unloading the van. They were honestly brilliant.

ees2203 · 04/01/2021 11:13

Majority of properties have there own isolating valve at the water connection for the washing machine so no real need to turn off mains water.

AlwaysLatte · 04/01/2021 11:19

You don't need to 'have it' disconnected, you can do it yourself really easily!

Daphnise · 04/01/2021 17:12

Hope you get this done to your satisfaction.

Just some advice- in your new place you MUST find on day one the main stopcock for the whole premises. And make sure it works. Also how to turn off electricity and gas, if applicable.

It is too dangerous and utterly foolish not to know how to turn the water, gas and electricity off.

NCHouseBuy · 04/01/2021 18:26

I asked and they won't do it.

Yes, of course I know how to turn off the water and power, I just haven't ever disconnected a washing machine and after reading the horror stories (including on here) of a busted valve flooding the laundry for moving day, I don't want to fuck it all up.

There's only one intake hose I can see - is that right? Just one for hot and cold?

Mosaic123 · 04/01/2021 18:47

I called in a washing machine repair company to disconnect it and drain it. We were storing in the garage pending refurbishment of the new place which had a washing machine. I didn't want it to go rusty while we were waiting. It's a Miele. Cost was one call out charge.

NCHouseBuy · 04/01/2021 18:56

I've looked again, I have one intake hose, one waste hose, no 2nd intake hose (hot or cold?) and so helpful no on/off handle or knob at the intake connection. None. 😂

There might be more behind the machine, but it's right snug in next to a dryer and I absoutely cannot shift the bastard out. Unbelievably frustrating.

OP posts:
WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 04/01/2021 19:59

The on/off knob will be on the pipework. Mine is under the kitchen sink.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 04/01/2021 20:07

And yes one intake hose is normal.

pickingdaisies · 04/01/2021 20:12

A lot of washing machines have cold water intake only.

Usually i open the washing machine and yank it out but make sure you do this slowly. As for the hoses, there should only be two (1 Waste, 1 cold intake).
