Can you recommend a drill for a small woman?

I need to buy a drill, ideally something with decent power but designed for someone with small hands and pathetically weak wrists. I need to be able to operate it one handed (while holding what I’m drilling with the other hand) but isn’t a toy. I’d prefer if it’s not pink but I can put up with that if I can find something that actually works.

And I’d really appreciate any other recommendation on tools and power tools designed for smaller women. I’m really tired of having to ask dh to do stuff that I could do better because the tools are unwieldy.

Don't be daft. I am 5 foot tall and i use a bosch hammer drill. You don't need special lady tools.

QuestionableMouse · 03/01/2021 01:51

I'd have to double check, but I think this is the one I have. www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcd776s2t-gb-18v-1-5ah-li-ion-xr-cordless-combi-drill/2710p I have crap wrists and don't find it too awkward.

Dunno about you, but my hands are pretty small and sometimes it's just not practical trying to use tools designed for men. And I'm pretty darn practical, was raised in a family of joiners and bricklayers.

Watching!

Drill we have is stupid heavy. DH can weild it, i can barely lift the fucking thing let alone hold it straight while drilling!

We bought a rechargeable Bosch after my FFS but it's really not very powerful.

It's not a stupid question op. I'm half the size of DH. Tools are mainly built for the average man who is bigger and stronger than the average woman.

I imagine older men have the same issues as well.

It's nothing to do with weak or whatever.

I'll keep watching OP.

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to handle a normal drill.

SueDeNimm · 03/01/2021 01:56

I have just bought a dewalt cordless combi drill from screwfix on the advice of my brother. It's got fuck off power (love it already) but is surprisingly small and not overly heavy. If I'd got the smaller batteries It would be even lighter. It fits my small hands perfectly and is super easy to use. Decent power means I'm not struggling with it either. Massively well rated drills and well worth the £139 I paid. They have a smaller one that might be just perfect.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/01/2021 01:57

If your hands and wrists are that weak, you shouldn't be using power tools to begin with.

SueDeNimm · 03/01/2021 01:58

Oh haha I see I'm the second dewalt/screwfix fan! Well they are very very good I'll say that! My brother says it's the best drill he's ever owned! And he does a lot of drilling!

QuestionableMouse · 03/01/2021 02:03

I've been a fan of dewalt tools for ages now and despite what some posters think there's nothing wrong having tools you can handle safely.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 02:05

Thank you for the DeWalt recs!

And um. Yes totally smaller women/ older women/ older men should NEVER do anything like this.

Crikey. Surprised by some of the posts.

No no questionable!

It's not about default male.

It's about women being very very weak.

Women who are smaller should never even attempt to use things that don't fit them. If they don't fit then they aren't supposed to be doing it! EG loads of cars, PPE, etc etc etc HmmWink

thelegohooverer · 03/01/2021 02:16

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve just ordered the dewalt one and some extra drill bits.

Nice one op update on how it is?

thelegohooverer · 03/01/2021 02:30

I certainly will.

And in case it’s useful to anyone else, I’ve found that a Japanese saw is significantly easier for me to handle safely because it cuts on the pull stroke instead of on the push stroke.

Ironically, if you had smaller joints and less dense bones for some reason, you'd find a more powerful drill better.

More power= less vibration= less strain on joints

You could look for one that has the extra handle, to ease stress on the wrist and exercise greater control during use.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 03/01/2021 09:04

This is a very helpful thread for me, I’m 5f and a peanut quite strong but dh’s drill is too heavy for me to hold and hold the thing I’m drilling, I think I’ll treat myself!

Btw I’m a gardener and Japanese tools work well for me, accept being a small person!

Chumleymouse · 03/01/2021 09:45

There’s an easier way to drill holes than holding a drill with one hand and the thing your drilling with the other.
I was always taught to mark the hole on / for whatever you are drilling then remove it and drill the hole with both hands on the drill, that way you can control the drill better and get better accuracy too .

SausagePourHomme · 03/01/2021 13:02

exactly, chumleymouse. If you can't use a regular drill you should check your technique is right. Don't make life harder for yourself.

SausagePourHomme · 03/01/2021 13:02

that last bit directed at the OP, obviously.

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/01/2021 13:06

If the things you are drilling is small enough to hold, you need a clamp. You may also need a smaller drill so your hand can reach, but put anything small enough to move whilst drilling in a clamp.

cushioncovers · 03/01/2021 13:14

5'2" here and I've bought a DeWalt one. I get on fine with it.

Can you recommend a drill for a small woman?
SwayingInTime · 03/01/2021 13:18

Was just going to say that it’s pretty rare to be able to drill well with one hand. With both hands you should be able to drill fine with any drill. I actually still use one that plugs in though so no battery weight.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 15:30

Why would you be holding a thing and then drilling it? Jesus that's dangerous!

Seems like like some people just can't accept that some drills are very big and heavy for some women, and assume instead the women are fucking stupid Hmm

Oblomov20 · 03/01/2021 15:50

Dh's is really nice. I'll check which one it is.
