If you have a utility room do your units match your kitchen?

Just finished our kitchen and about to start the utility.

The kitchen is very modern and minimalist and is in a new extension. The utility is in the Victorian part of the house.

Would it look silly to have more traditional units in the utility?

Ours do match, but I think having different ones would look lovely for yours.

mooloop · 30/12/2020 18:10

Ours match but I don't think they have to Smile

Plonque · 30/12/2020 18:14

In this house yes, in last house no.
Neither right or wrong I suppose, depends on your set up.

CoffeeCheeseandCupcakes · 30/12/2020 18:14

Our kitchen is grey with a navy island - our utility is navy (but a cheaper version of the doors!)

I don't think they need to match, but if they're connecting rooms I think they need to "go" with each other. Maybe different style but same colour

Franticbutterfly · 30/12/2020 20:04

No. But I did oak worktops so they tie in with the wood (effect) in the kitchen.

Flamingolingo · 30/12/2020 20:08

I think it depends if the utility is very visible from the kitchen. Ours is in a different part of the house entirely so doesn’t need to match. In our old house it was adjoining so we got similar looking but cheaper doors for the utility

Africa2go · 30/12/2020 20:08

No, ours are completely different.

BackforGood · 30/12/2020 20:12

No. Different room.
Why would they need to match ?

Megan2018 · 30/12/2020 20:15

Ours are similar but don’t match-the rooms aren’t adjoining though. We basically went cheaper in the utility (cheaper doors and laminate worktop-solid doors and oak in kitchen).

PronkWine · 30/12/2020 20:24

Ours don't but the utility and kitchen aren't connected

ivfbeenbusy · 30/12/2020 20:26

The units match but whereas we have solid worktops in the kitchen we have laminate worktops in the utility.

minipie · 30/12/2020 20:30

Ours are the other way round - in frame painted, so fairly trad in the kitchen, and white matt handleless in the utility.

Our utility isn’t visible from or off the kitchen (tho is next to it). I chose what I thought was best for each room, the utility is tiny and windowless so kind of needed handleless white.

Imiss2019 · 30/12/2020 20:30

No but our utility is at a separate end of the house.

RickiTarr · 30/12/2020 20:33

I’ve had it both ways and I don’t believe it matters unless they are connect d by glass door maybe. Even then, coordinating is as good as matching.

Chasingsquirrels · 30/12/2020 20:33

Mine match now (having had a new kitchen & utility fitted last year), but they didn't for the first 20 years after the house was built.
Having said that, the utility previously only had 1 base-sink unit and no wall units.
Utility leads off the kitchen.

Cleverpolly3 · 30/12/2020 20:35

My units and floor match but I don’t think that they “have” to
Just make then totally different if you’re not going to keep the the same so it looks deliberate

bluechameleon · 30/12/2020 20:37

Ours don't. They were done at the same time but we went for the cheapest units in the utility and nicer ones in the kitchen. They aren't adjoining though, we might have made them the same if they were.

Redcrayons · 30/12/2020 20:40

Mine do. It was only two extra units and the worktop was an off cut of the kitchen one. I had it done at the same time as the kitchen so was not much extra cost.

Daydrambeliever · 30/12/2020 20:41

No. We went for cheaper units and doors in the utility so they are similar but different. It's a totally separate room though so it looks fine.

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2020 20:42

Ours match but the utility is off the kitchen so would look odd if they didn't.

girlabouthome · 30/12/2020 20:44

Ours match as the utility is in the kitchen and is visible, would look odd otherwise

passthemustard · 30/12/2020 20:45

Yep mine matches. But it's off the kitchen and the doors always open so would look odd if they didn't match. The kitchen designer suggested not getting the solid surface worktops in the utility but I didn't take her advice!

Murinae · 30/12/2020 20:49

Mine don’t match. Completely different kitchen units in the utility. Old house owner reused their old kitchen units in the utility. When we redo the kitchen next year sometime we will redo the utility too and then they will match.

Thecazelets · 30/12/2020 20:50

Not in this house but they did in the last. Currently painted in-frame and granite in kitchen and gloss slab and laminate in the utility. I'd prefer matching I think as utility leads off kitchen - we are living with the previous owners' choices as too expensive to change, and they went for much cheaper finishes in the utility. But still looks fine - as in functional/unremarkable.

Aerielview · 30/12/2020 20:53

No, ours don't match. When we got a new kitchen we used the old units for the utility room
