If you have a utility room do your units match your kitchen?

Just finished our kitchen and about to start the utility.

The kitchen is very modern and minimalist and is in a new extension. The utility is in the Victorian part of the house.

Would it look silly to have more traditional units in the utility?

No. I quite like it.

However, in the new house they will, but I will be choosing different flooring, worktops and wall paint, so they'll look very different.

No, I have a nice but plain kitchen, ikea shaker, the utility hasn’t had any work done since I moved in, like the rest of the property the utility was trashed, so none of the cupboards have doors and the worktops have burn marks.

Its a long but very narrow utility, so I want a work surface over the washine machine, then shelves/a wall mounted kallax and somewhere for a wall clip for the vacuum etc.

Most utilities I've seen or had myself have different (usually cheaper) units to the kitchen ones. As long as it's a completely separate room, then there is no need to have the same units imo.

Ours match although completed 3 years apart. They have a glass door between them and we thought of similar style and laminate for utility. In the end we decided we would never be happy if they didn’t match so went for it and are pleased we did. Although wish we had ordered utility units at same time as kitchen as they ended up 3 times original price due to original manufacturer going into liquidation!

Hurtandupset2 · 30/12/2020 23:30

Our cupboards and doors match exactly, as does the tiled floor, but the worktop is slightly student, although almost identical in colour( kitchen is quartz, utility one is laminate).
The utility can't be fully seen from the kitchen, but both are in the same area of the house. The kitchen is part of the open plan area and the utility leads off from this at the start of the hallway/ end of open plan area, but has a door to separate it.

Hurtandupset2 · 30/12/2020 23:30

*different, not student ..... bloody predictive text!! 🤣

Bluesheep8 · 31/12/2020 08:43

Ours are the same, utility leads off the kitchen though. Walls in both are pale blue and units painted a pale stone colour. I did toy with the idea of having walls blue and units stone in the kitchen and walls stone and units blue in the utility, ie just reversing the colours but I wasn't brave enough

Oh wasn't expecting so many replies!

DH thinks they should match, but the utility will have open shelves with Kilner jars where the old window was and my cream kitchen aid mixer on the side. So I'm not sure that would work well with black handle less units.

The utility won't be visible from the kitchen.

We have quite expensive bespoke cabinets in our kitchen and standard units from Benchmarx/Travis Perkins in our utility room.

Our utility room has a door and I didn't think it was worth paying for posher units in there. It's not a place I linger, more a functional space where I can grumble about the mountain of washing that goes through there.

BackforGood · 31/12/2020 18:09

But what does it matter ? Confused
Who is going to be sitting in your utility room, noticing that level of detail ? Confused

By its very definition, a utility is a workroom where you bung the washing into the machine. Why would you waste money on bespoke units in a room no-one is going to see / be looking at ?

PresentingPercy · 31/12/2020 18:19

I had bespoke units in my laundry because I have a large built in unit for my washer with my dryer above. Also a drying area with a cloths rail and lots of storage. I also have a big hand wash sink with a plumbed in drainer. It’s quite important to get it designed and make the best use of the space. Mine doesn’t match the kitchen and isn’t near it but I think getting the design right for your needs is important.

claireb7rg · 31/12/2020 18:22

Ours match but we did them at the same time and we have a larder cupboard in the utility, we leave the door open between the two most of the time

BackforGood · 31/12/2020 20:21

That makes absolute sense PresentingPercy - maximising space - but the OP was worrying about her 'cream kitchen aid mixer' 'not working with black, handle less units'

Graffitiqueen · 31/12/2020 20:50

I had no intention of getting bespoke units for a utility. DH wanted the same expensive units we have in the kitchen so they match. I was thinking of something more basic and traditional for the utility that would fit with other plans we had for it. Hmm

If you don’t use a kitchen appliance much you might as well stick it in the utility room. Or find storage for it in the kitchen. I don’t leave my Kitchen Aid mixer on show - even if it is a beautiful colour that fully complements my decor!

Lemoncurd · 01/01/2021 01:30

We've ordered both at the same time. Units and flooring will match but we've ordered a lower priced worktop for the utility.

XingMing · 01/01/2021 15:14

Our kitchen and utility room units are the same, except the handles.

Ariela · 01/01/2021 15:39

Yes - but we have a door open most of the time and we have a window between the two.

Pascha · 01/01/2021 16:34

No. Much of the old kitchen carcasses and the sink and worktop were transferred into the utility. The doors were old and broken so we replaced them some on sale at b&q. It would have been out of our budget to buy all new.
