Help! How to arrange a tiny room for a 4 year old??

Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 22:50

Hi! Hope you lovely people might have some ideas on how to arrange my 4 year old girl's room. It's tiny, there's lots of stuff, eventhough most of the toys are in the living room Shock

Room is 1.88cm by 3.40cm. Window straight by the wall, door straight by the wall opening into it.

She currently has a single bed, ikea malm dresser (the tallest one with small drawers on top) and that fits in all her clothing, underwear, uniform etc etc. She also has a small bookshelf but her books have long outgrown it and are everywhere on the floor etc. She has some toys here mostly cuddly toys.

Toying with an idea of mid sleeper to have space underneath but worried the bulk of it will crowd the room too much.
Single bed with storage drawers???

Was hoping to fit the bed right on the short wall under the window but the room width is only 188cm so won't fit a single bed in.

How to create a cosy room with storage for the little bits/books/toys so it doesn't feel suffocating?

Soon she'll want to spend more time in her bedroom to play (currently mostly for sleeping but she's been spending some time in it recently to play in peace).

We're renting so can't do any major changes. Hoping to move in a couple of years so would like to make it nice for her to last till shes about 6 or 7....

Attached a plan I've made but the room dimentions are not fully correct. The room is a bit smaller (188cm by 340cm)

Helpful for any suggestions, especially if you have a little one in a tiny room too! Thank you!

We just moved and have bought new furniture for our nearly 4 year old's very similar dimensioned room! I think it's about 3.5m x 1.9m or very close to that.

We wanted to put the bed across the far end too, but a single wouldnt fit. We wanted bigger than a toddler bed, so we bought her this bed from argos, but fancy but a good size for the space:

www.argos.co.uk/product/8898757?istCompanyId=a74d8886-5df9-4baa-b776-166b3bf9111c&istFeedId=c290d9a9-b5d6-423c-841d-2a559621874c&istItemId=ixwmwmtii&istBid=t&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59130%7cacid:289-152-2757%7ccid:265006737%7cagid:14507206137%7ctid:aud-641224040577:pla-872412738908%7ccrid:73382240337%7cnw:g%7crnd:13530752722598296806%7cdvc:m%7cadp:%7cmt:%7cloc:1006627&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=265006737&utm_term=&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=14507206137&utm_custom2=289-152-2757&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8oqi1N7s7QIVlYBQBh2XiwY3EAQYAiABEgJKXfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Wow long link, sorry, hope it works! It's almost single sized but a shorty bed, it would fit your room, its 182cm. Our window is the equivalent of your long wall on the righ in the ouch though, and the door is the same corner but the other way if you see what I mean. She has her bed, a chest of drawers, a 2x2 kallax unit on the equivalent of the left hand long wall in your pic, then a small ikea wardrobe opposite her door. It's not the biggest room, but it feels a pretty good size for her to be honest. I definitely wouldnt say its tiny. I think the raised bed helps with the feeling of space, she has her doll house and some other toys underneath it. Works well for us.

ivfbeenbusy · 26/12/2020 23:09

Room doesn't look much smaller than my 4 year old - we bought a "shorty mid sleeper" from ARGOS - same width but shorter than a normal single bed. Works a treat and loads of storage underneath - we got a couple of the cube style bookcases from Argos too and they go under the bed with books on them

Then some of those floor to ceiling net things with pockets from IKEA - they house all the soft toys

IRememberMySpaceBabe · 26/12/2020 23:10

We have the IKEA Kura bed in DS’ tiny box room - he went in at 5.5 as a cabin bed where he had to climb up the ladder to get in - I think the recommended age to have it higher is 6, so not sure if your DD would be too little....but it’s very slimline for a cabin bed and not chunky at all.

He has a tall open-sided bookshelf next to this (also serves as a bedside table as he has his drink and an LED lamp on there), a small chest of drawers at the foot of the bed, and a 4-box Kallax underneath it. We are lucky in that we have a teeny tiny built-in wardrobe where we can hang things but it’s really small - he doesn’t seem to mind though thankfully!

Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 23:13

Thanks! Yeah I've been looking at the argos bed. I've literally only got her a new single mattress maybe 4 months ago! If I hadn't I'd definitely be going for a shorty one now! Does your door open straight into the bed? Does it not crowd the room space? Maybe I'm thinking from an adult view point of 5 foot something and should be looking at it from the 4 yo's perspective closer to the floor level Grin

OP posts:
IRememberMySpaceBabe · 26/12/2020 23:18

Thinking about it actually the Kura is annoying as it’s a slightly longer bed than the U.K. standard single and we had to buy a new mattress which was a bit of a pain - thankfully our DD moved into a standard single bed so she took DS’ mattress.

Cleverpolly3 · 26/12/2020 23:30

Is your little one a good sleeper or do they get up in the night a lot ?
Mid sleepers would be no good with mine as the are tossed and turners and often wake up I would be concerned a four year old might take a tumble

Anawi · 26/12/2020 23:34

For us it was worth the hit of the new mattress to be able to fit the shorty bed across the bottom of the room, it makes a big difference to how the room looks and feels. I wouldn't be keen on the bed right in front of the door, I know what you mean, but if that's the only place it will fit I'm sure it will be fine for her Smile if you have s standard sized bed, I'd put it in the bottom left corner running along the long wall towards the door. That was going to be our back up plan if we hadn't got the shorty bed, I think that would work, although our door opens from the left hand wall so it's a bit different.

Anawi · 26/12/2020 23:36

Yeah we were a bit worried about it, bit decided to try it and rethink if we didnt feel comfortable with it. She has always been a confident climber, she can manage the steps easily and so far has been fine with it. She does sleep pretty well though, if your daughter is up and down more I'd be more wary.

Kimbo1974 · 26/12/2020 23:37

My 4 Yr old has a mid sleeper and it's fab, fits loads of toys and books under and she loves sitting under to play!!

ODFOx · 26/12/2020 23:38

I built a high bed with side rails but no head and foot boards for my DS room which is exactly 188cm wide. It is attached to the walls on 3 sides and a single 190cm just fits in with a slight squeeze (2cm isn't much) Then I attached an upholstered foam pad directly to the wall as a headboard. You could do the same at cabin bed height. It's a good use of the space as you still have a good floor area for play.

ODFOx · 26/12/2020 23:39

That should read that a single 190cm mattress just fits in.

OneEpisode · 26/12/2020 23:39

Is there a heater or radiator in the room that we have to avoid? At the moment it looks like there is space below the window for an extra piece of furniture (keep the bed where it is now and save your money for a bookcase or similar there?)

OneEpisode · 26/12/2020 23:42

I have lots of cardboard in the house at the moment. You could try making pretend furniture out of something like that and seeing how it fits (do imaginary drawers open, can you pull out imaginary books from shelves?).

Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 23:44

@Cleverpolly3 ah, didn't think of that.... she does wake up at night still for various reasons and occasionally wets her bed. I bet midsleeper is a nightmare to change in the middle of the night.....!

OP posts:
Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 23:45

She also likes us to lie down with her to read books or just chat before bedtime!

OP posts:
dixiedo · 26/12/2020 23:48

If you didn't want a mid sleeper I would go for a gas lift ottoman bed rather than a bed with drawers. I love the gas lifts for storage.

Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 23:48

@OneEpisode yes there is one but just where the door opens, so hides behind the open door if that makes sense?

OP posts:
Coffeeonadrip · 26/12/2020 23:50

@dixiedo love them too! Our bed is a gas lift! I'll think about it, having a cheeky little monkey at home makes me weary..... she'd try and shut herself in there! Grin

I’d also put a shorty bed across the far wall; or make one.
How long is her mattress- you might find it just fits, but if not I’d definitely take the hit and go for a shorty bed.
Something like this would give you storage without being hard to change:

Your DD's room is very similar to my DD's. Only ours is a touch wider - it's wide enough to put the single bed width-ways and I'd really love to do that only it'll block the boiler cupboard so we can't.

I'd go with the shorter bed and widthways if you can, it'll open the space up more.

Otherwise, we have a cabin bed which I do recommend. We got one with storage first of all, but changed it to one with space for playing underneath. DD doesn't use it as much as I hoped she might, but she's a good bit older than yous (7) and I think she would have played with it more when she was younger. She does use it when friends come over though and it does make a difference to the space she's got to play in and to store stuff in - she has a narrow bookcase running the length of the wall under the bed, which she keeps books and toys in. Plus cushions and a world of cuddly toys.

PinGwyn · 27/12/2020 00:14

My 7yo's room is 2m wide x 2.3m long.

We have a divan bed where yours is with drawers underneath for books/dvds. Don't go for a mid/highsleeper - they are a bastard to build in small spaces and even worse to dismantle, they also dominate the space and make it much more claustrophobic.

Plastic drawers in corner under window as a toy box/shelf for trinkets.

TV on wall at bottom of bed, shelf underneath for lamp/trinkets.

Roller blind on window - no curtains as they draw the room in whereas the roller blind is basically hidden when open during the day.

Made space in our room for drawers so her clothes are in there, when she's older and needs less play space we'll put a nice slim tall boy/wardrobe in her room.

IKEA trofast unit is in the hallway so that gives extra storage and organisation but we are lucky or hallway is quite wide! Would that be an option?

Over door fabric shoe rack on the back of the door for soft toys - small/medium fit perfectly, one in each pouch. Our radiator is also in same place so larger go at top, smaller at bottom so the door opens wide.

We moved when DD was 6 and I had a huge panic when I realised how small her room is but with a bit of organisation and compromise we absolutely love it and she calls it her den :o

OneEpisode · 27/12/2020 00:18

I think a 4 yr old is still likely to climb? If you have an L or U space you can connect units together, for instance this is a (much larger!) u space filled with IKEA Billy bookcases of different sizes www.southernrevivals.com/office-makeover-reveal-ikea-hack-built-billy-bookcases/
Sorry I couldn’t find an image more appropriate!
A u is more stable and as you are renting you might want to avoid fixing to the wall?

converseandjeans · 27/12/2020 00:21

That's similar to DD room. We now have small double in there under the window (which looks silly but it does fit - not my idea!)

I would also avoid cabin bed in small room.

Ikea & Argos do small basic frames which should fit.

  • Use over door hangers
  • Ikea Kallax
  • bed with drawers underneath
  • plenty of shelves for books & toys

I would do a scaled drawing to get an idea if it all fits in there.

minipie · 27/12/2020 00:23

Could you re hang the door to open outwards? I know you’re renting but it’s not a big or controversial change

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/12/2020 00:25

@Coffeeonadrip is the malm dresser bolted to the wall? There have been some horrible accidents.
