Help! How to arrange a tiny room for a 4 year old??

Hi! Hope you lovely people might have some ideas on how to arrange my 4 year old girl's room. It's tiny, there's lots of stuff, eventhough most of the toys are in the living room Shock

Room is 1.88cm by 3.40cm. Window straight by the wall, door straight by the wall opening into it.

She currently has a single bed, ikea malm dresser (the tallest one with small drawers on top) and that fits in all her clothing, underwear, uniform etc etc. She also has a small bookshelf but her books have long outgrown it and are everywhere on the floor etc. She has some toys here mostly cuddly toys.

Toying with an idea of mid sleeper to have space underneath but worried the bulk of it will crowd the room too much.
Single bed with storage drawers???

Was hoping to fit the bed right on the short wall under the window but the room width is only 188cm so won't fit a single bed in.

How to create a cosy room with storage for the little bits/books/toys so it doesn't feel suffocating?

Soon she'll want to spend more time in her bedroom to play (currently mostly for sleeping but she's been spending some time in it recently to play in peace).

We're renting so can't do any major changes. Hoping to move in a couple of years so would like to make it nice for her to last till shes about 6 or 7....

Attached a plan I've made but the room dimentions are not fully correct. The room is a bit smaller (188cm by 340cm)

Helpful for any suggestions, especially if you have a little one in a tiny room too! Thank you!

Can you fit a standard single mattress across the short wall? We could do that but not a bed frame as the skirting board made it impossible. We managed to find a short length bed from IKEA that fitted in the space and could get a standard mattress on top with no over hang.

When our youngest wanted to move out of bunk beds we got them mid sleeper type beds so they could have a sort of play den underneath. They loved it for a while, until they got got bigger and wanted their own rooms and could have their bunk beds separately. I hated making both bunks and mid sleepers though!

I wouldn't get a mid sleeper, they're a bugger to change the mattress!

What I would do is buy a regular size single (3ft) or narrow single (2ft 6inch) bed frame and cut down the length of the sides by 10-20cm (obviously taking into account the skirting as you'll lose a few cm of room width) and remove a slat or two. You can purchase custom size width mattresses (Google search comes up with loads of options). The bed will be fine in length until she starts high school, and you can take it with you if you move house. Might be difficult to put fitted sheets on a small mattress, but flat sheets are easy enough to find and fit.

I would then put the bed along the wall with the window.

Under bed storage boxes for bedding, toys and out of season clothing. Have a wall mounted light (IKEA do plug in ones) rather than a bedside table and a tall, thin wardrobe - IKEA ones are good as you can change the position of everything. Get baskets for underwear underneath the clothes that are hanging in the wardrobe.

Hooks on the wall with drawstring bags with toys, and you can also hang dressing up clothes on them too.

Furniture on legs, even short ones, will make the room feel bigger.

DD2 had a room similar to this at the same age. She had the Ikea Minnen bed (not fully extended) at the far end, under the window and storage boxes underneath. To the right of the window, on the narrow bit of wall she had shelving for books. On the left of the door, instead of a wardrobe, she had a coat rack (similar to IKEA Hemnes one) for any hanging clothes. On top of that were storage boxes. You could do something similar and put the chest of drawers beneath it (making sure it's fixed to the wall). Next to DD2's bed we had this Trofast unit with the lowest level acting as a bedside table with a lamp on it. The drawers had toys in them although the lowest level box was used for picture books.

I find the mid sleeper ok to change sheets etc on - but DH is 6ft4 so I usually get him to do it as he can do it easily 🤣

Thanks everyone! We have decided to fit the single mattress across/along the short wall by the window (it will fit with a bit squeeze). A single bed wont fot so we're (DH) us building something as attached for toy storage.

I think we'll wait with the mid sleeper until she's more reliable to sleep through the night and stay dry Wink

Happy days!

We've just done DS2's small bedroom, he's 4. I got a narrow, short cabin bed from here:

...and we've put lots of plastic chest of drawers underneath. It's worked a charm and there's even space for him to play.

MoodyMarshall · 29/12/2020 08:35

(He doesn't go through the night either but sleepwalks out of his mid-sleeper into my bed Grin)

Ds's room is smaller than tis. Can't even fit a single bed length ways because of the position of the radiator. He has a small alcove on one side with a high chest of drawers in and we are going to make a Kallax bed as that will fit. So really he will have a mid sleeper cabin bed.
