Charming and delightful - no chain - high streets?

Can anyone think of any?

Lovely friendly local shops, not chains (or 95% of them not chains anyway!) that help create a nice community.

I’ve heard Stroud is a bit like this, and I think Broadway Market is like this in London.

But would like to hear of others!

Church Street in Stoke-Newington
Bermondsey Street in London Bridge
Dulwich village
Brockley Road
Cross street and Upper Street in Islington

Gloucester Road, Bristol

Although Glos Rd is not 'charming and delightful' in a pretty way. It's more urban and grubby but great shops and sense of community.

Sellorwait6 · 26/12/2020 15:32

Great suggestions! I know a couple of those roads, fastfood and that’s exactly what I mean.

I haven’t been to Gloucester Road, Muuuuuum but I don’t mind urban!

Orford Road in Walthamstow comes to mind. Very pretty!

Burton road in west didsbury Manchester

St.John’s Road, Waterloo.

Clifton Village in Bristol.
Yes, Gloucester Rd there too, in a shabby but nice way.

I think Godalming High St has hardly any chain shops and is moreof an idyllic villagey place.
Reigate, also in Surrey.

CatAndHisKit · 27/12/2020 02:19

(though Gloucester Rd has many charity shops - nice, larger ones, but just mentioning this as you may have meant more indie boutiques, OP).

Sellorwait6 · 27/12/2020 08:13

Ooh thanks these are very interesting! Would love to hear more!

Knutsford and Alderley Edge.

Sherborne is pretty good for that. There are chain stores (Fat Face, Joules, Costa etc) but there are also lots of lovely independent shops and regular farmers' markets.

custardbear · 27/12/2020 08:43

West Bridgford which is Nottingham, home of Trent Bridge, TB cricket ground and Notts forest and Notts county football - some names, but lots of independent shops etc too

CreepyCreepster · 27/12/2020 08:45

Ledbury

Headcorn high st
Tenterden high st
Hythe high st

Altrincham, to the South of Manchester, is full of chain shops but also has a great market with independent traders, around which independent shops are growing. It's a good mix of both IMO.

checkedcloth · 27/12/2020 08:59

Totnes - Devon
Burnham Market - Norfolk
Hove

In the Cotswolds: Burford (although a Fred said there was a distinct lack of community very much a second/holiday home town) , Tetbury, Malmesbury, Minchinhampton and even Lechlade all small towns with a variety of shops and few if any chains.

macshoto · 27/12/2020 09:11

Ludlow in Shropshire is mostly independent shops.

When did you last go to Malmesbury? There are lots of chains there!

Beech Road in Chorlton, Manchester is my contribution.
