Walls in Farrow and ball, ceiling in Dulux

I posted this in interior decoration without much response so I am posting here as well, hope that’s ok.
We are repainting the living room in F&B Pointing. To save some £s we’re planning on painting ceilings in Dulux. Does that sound ok? And what kind of white would work with pointing? A cool white or something warmer? Thank you for any advice.

We've always used a cheaper paint like Dulux for ceilings. It'll be fine.

whataboutbob · 14/12/2020 21:12

Thanks @24hrpantypeople24!

Get a colour match for the F&B paint in either valspar (get from b&q) or from decorating centre online. F&B is pretty bad quality (very watery, takes LOADS of coats) and ridiculously expensive. I've always got colour matches from both brands I've mentioned and they've been amazing and saved so much money.

I would actually disagree with pp about colour matching- not me but DH does all our decorating and much prefers F&B. Use a good primer and do 2/3 coats and honestly it’s amazing. We colour matched with valspar for the hall to get something really durable but the depth of colour and quality of paint is so much better. Definitely cheaper paint for the ceiling though! I’d go for a cooler tone.

Napqueen1234 · 14/12/2020 21:26

Sorry if that was confusing I meant the quality of the valspar hall is nowhere near as good as our rooms in F&B

Gloomandglow · 14/12/2020 21:39

Definitely colour match if you're going to be using the room. We had the walls painted in our sitting room with F&B and whilst I agree that the depth of colour cannot be matched, it just isn't very durable. It marks very easily and can't be wiped down.

Tikkurila optiva 3 is the closest I've come to recreating the F&B feel but it's washable. I've also used Johnstone's colour matched which is also very good.

As for your actual question, I'd just go for white on the ceiling- recently we used Dulux super Matt white on ours and I was really impressed with the opacity and it's not bluey like brilliant white. I have all white in the kitchen and it's very close to that.

Valspar is the WORST paint I've ever used. I colour matches after painting one room in f and b and ended up costing the same as it took three times the paint to cover.

Lazypuppy · 14/12/2020 22:13

I couldn't imagine having to use a primer and then 2-3 coats for F&B! What a faff!

I used to use Dulux but love Valspar now, would definitely recommend colour matching

smartipants · 14/12/2020 22:49

I use valspar to colour match the f&b, give it 1-2 coats depending on how much colour change am going for. Then I put on a coat of f&b, depth of colour and overall feel can't be beaten in my book. Use f&b 'modern emulsion' if you want a wipeable more durable finish (its slightly less matt than estate emulsion).

But yes! Lol your ceiling will be fine in dulux

PresentingPercy · 15/12/2020 08:42

We have a lot of our house in pointing by F&B. Hall, lounge, landing, kitchen - big spaces in this house. No issues with it at all! Always use their paints and, if you can get on line, they show you palettes of complimentary colours. We have all woodwork and all ceilings (in every room) in Wimborne White. So you could match that to a Dulux White I suspect. Wimborne is not a brilliant white. I think it’s a warmer white. Pointing is very easy to live with.

IrenetheQuaint · 15/12/2020 08:44

I do this, it works well. Use Dulux Cotton White which is quite soft and goes well with F&B off whites.

whataboutbob · 15/12/2020 10:09

Thanks guys for some great tips. I picked up 3 samples at Dulux decorator centre ( trade) and we are trying them next to Pointing. White cotton, timeless, rock salt. Good to know re Wimborne white and Pointing @PresentingPercy. I agree Pointing is so easy to love. The room was in Cromarty but it’s north West facing and the colour just looked cold until about 4 pm. Couldn’t face another winter with it!
Interesting to hear the love for Valspar. A while ago there were reports of it emanating fishy smells, but I guess that must be resolved now.

OP posts:
whataboutbob · 15/12/2020 10:25

Timeless is looking the best so far. Rock salt has a definite grey which doesn’t work with Pointing.

PresentingPercy · 15/12/2020 12:38

You need a "warm" white. Pointing has warm tones, as you rightly say, and needs a warmer white. The stark cold/grey whites don't work with it, in my view.

VinylDetective · 15/12/2020 13:34

Timeless is lovely. Our kitchen is done with it and we’ll be using it everywhere now. Our decorator flatly refused to use F&B, told us to find someone else if we were intent on having it.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/12/2020 13:38

@LittleOverwhelmed

Would avoid F&B and just colour match: the various professional decorator we have used have not rated the F&B finish and have always advocated colour matching...
Yes of course they have! They can't add any markup to F&B but they can to colour matched trade bought paint.

We have dulux brilliant white on all ceilings and f&b and mylands on walls. I really rate mylands as an alternative to farrow and ball. - same price point though.

VinylDetective · 15/12/2020 13:41

My decorator wasn’t buying the paint. I caught on to that particular scam decades ago.

earsup · 15/12/2020 23:48

if you use valspar then it must be the premium range....the regular stuff is awful...my neighbour works at b and q...says everyone moans about how bad it is....leyland is great paint....get that mixed up.

SundayGirl86 · 15/12/2020 23:55

I’m another one who doesn’t rate Valspar. We used it in our lounge and it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. We have F&B elsewhere and I really don’t understand people saying it’s poor quality. It’s lovely to paint with and whatever colour you choose, it looks amazing. I agree with others about ceilings in Dulux.

PresentingPercy · 16/12/2020 14:37

I’ve never had a decorator that won’t use F&B. If they refuse to use the paint I provide, then I wouldn’t use them.

The only debate we’ve ever had with a decorator was whether to use it in our sawn wood clad garage/barn/flat. Decorator wanted Sadolins wood stain or similar. I stuck to my guns with F&B external paint for wood in Off Black. 10 years later it’s still perfect. The stain used before the F&B was awful after a few years. Faded and irregular colour. Decorator was amazed and freely admitted we were right to use it.

Itsokthanks · 16/12/2020 14:43

We always use a cheaper white paint on the ceilings. I disagree with people saying f&b doesn't go on well, two coats is plenty. I actually regret all the times I've wasted money on colour match paints, they're never the same colour and don't have the nice chalky finish.

whataboutbob · 19/12/2020 18:38

It’s done now and DH has delivered a beautiful job. He even did the inside window frames and skirting boards. Looks really good and he says the Dulux and the F&B were equally easy to apply. The only thing I might do differently next time is colour match f&bs All White with Dulux trade as I’m not sure Timeless is the perfect match for Pointing. But all in all very happy. Thanks to everyone for their input and advice.

PresentingPercy · 19/12/2020 19:56

I would have stuck with FandB because of their colour pairing advice. Copy what they advise and you won’t go wrong.

SollaSollew · 21/12/2020 08:43

Too late now but in case you do decide to redo it or die the guy tire, like @Gloomandglow I always user dulux Supermatt white when I want a true but not brilliant white. I have used f&b all white and though the finish is chalkier in F&B I think the colour is indistinguishable.
