Shower over bath??

We are in need of a new bathroom and our bathroom is TINY. We are looking at ways to get a better configuration than we currently have, which is a bath with a small size separate shower cubicle that abut each other. Question is - if you were buying a 5 bed detached house, would a bathroom with shower over the bath put you off? Would you expect a separate shower cubicle?? We do have an en suite shower room too but that is also very small. We don't particularly plan to move, but we don't want to rule it out so I don't want to install something that would put off future buyers. All opinions welcome! Thank you Smile

I’d prefer a shower over the bath with the bathroom feeling a little more spacious than for everything to be shoehorned in to get a separate shower and for the cubicle to be tiny.

Superstardjs · 12/12/2020 18:50

To be honest a 5 bed house with a tiny bathroom would put me off in itself I'm afraid.

In your position, I would do bath with shower over, as unless you have space for a large cubicle they can be unpleasantly small. Families tend to want a bath for children so you would need to keep that IMO.

Carrotcakey · 12/12/2020 18:51

Can you get an L shaped shower baths in? You can get some really nice ones.

CarpetTime · 12/12/2020 19:00

I would expect a separate shower and bath.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 12/12/2020 19:02

I’d rather have a shower over the bath than a tiny separate shower cubicle.

Bluntness100 · 12/12/2020 19:05

I’d also prefer a shower over the bath than noth a shower and bath that were so small as to be impractical.

PragmaticWench · 12/12/2020 19:06

Small shower cubicles remind me of nasty, cheap hotels. It's much nicer to have a shower over the bath and space to move your limbs around.

emsyj37 · 12/12/2020 19:43

Hmmmm, interesting that a lot of people think a shower over bath is ok , I've never lived in a house with a shower over the bath so I have only ever used one in a hotel.
Current configuration is a normal size (1650mm) bath with a 740mm square shower cubicle that abutts the bath. I am fixed that I want a bigger shower, but would still want a bath because I love baths and have one every day (got one running right now as it happens!) The idea of having a bath with a big screen in the way puts me off a bit....
The alternative is we can fit in a larger shower cubicle if we get a shorter bath - the one I'm looking at is the Cabuchon Calyx deep soaking tub, which is 1200mm long but 815mm wide and (i think, from memory) 630mm deep. It doesn't require a step to get in and I think it would be ok for bathing toddlers who can sit up - possibly too deep to put a bath seat in for little babies as leaning over would maybe be a pain? Hard to say without trying it tho.
@Superstardjs I hear you, but thankfully we live on the 'best' road in the area so I think the small bathroom wouldn't be a barrier to sale in itself, as long as we make the most if it IYSWIM and don't do something really awful with it. I'm quite heartened that people seem ok about a shower over bath- we could fit in a really nice big bath and we have the budget to do lovely tiles/fittings etc. Sadly all avenues re: increasing the size of the bathroom have drawn a blank, so we can only do our best with the space.

Actually, I'd prefer a 4 bedroom house with a decent sized bathroom. Before you spend any money on your current bathroom, is it worth considering a re-configuration to make one of the bedrooms into a new bathroom? Maybe make your existing bathroom into a study (so you'd end up with 4 bedrooms + study + ensuite + decent bathroom)?

Cheesypea · 12/12/2020 19:48

Shower over bath is what I have in the tiny shoe box I live in.

Timbucktime · 12/12/2020 19:50

Shower over a bath is absolutely fine, only have an extra shower cubicle if you can fit a decent size one in.

trilbydoll · 12/12/2020 19:53

Your bathroom isn't tiny if you currently have a separate shower cubicle, however small it is. Our bathroom door pretty much hits the toilet when you open it (4 bed house).

Whatever makes the bathroom look bigger and ensures there is some storage in the room.

TyrionsNextWife · 12/12/2020 19:53

When I had my bathroom fitted, I decided to have a shower over the bath and use the space spaced for storage. It’s been over a year now, and I don’t regret loosing the shower cubicle at all!

dementedpixie · 12/12/2020 19:54

We got a shower over the bath put in a couple of years ago. We also have a shower cubicle in our ensuite.

emsyj37 · 12/12/2020 19:55

@Africa2go we have 3 DC so we have 4 beds in use plus one as my office - if the office was at the back then your suggestion would be a great one but sadly its at the front (with original stained glass windows that I wouldn't want to replace). We have looked at taking a piece of DD2's bedroom to extend the bathroom but this would involve blocking up windows and moving brick walls so that level of work is off-putting, although we have given it serious consideration. We even had an architect out to assess the cost of a loft conversion purely so I could get my dream spacious bathroom but sadly it would cost far more than the value it would add.

So general consensus- is a shower over bath preferable to a separate cubicle plus a weird deep soaking tub?? Like this one: Calyx

In short, yes a shower over bath is definitely preferable! You should then also be able to fit in some more storage which I think makes up for a small bathroom to a certain extent especially with a large family. Oh and a heated towel rail!

justabigdisco · 12/12/2020 20:33

I’m guessing this is a fairly new build house? I don’t get the modern thing of squeezing as many bedrooms in as possible at the expense of space elsewhere. A family house needs a decent size bathroom. Unless you actually need 5 I agree with the person above who suggests knocking through one of the bedrooms to make a much bigger bathroom.

I really dislike that bath. I'd find that more off putting than a shower over a normal bath.

Countmeout · 12/12/2020 20:38

I really like the soaking tub and separate shower idea. I hate showers over the bath, always awkward to get in and out of.

TheSandman · 12/12/2020 20:40

Shower over bath is useful for washing things other than humans in a way a shower cubical is not. I'm always using our bath/shower for cleaning stuff.

Pebbledashery · 12/12/2020 20:42

Definitely shower over bath. In the property I rent. I have an electric shower over the bath and also a permanently fixed shower attachment on the taps. It's lovely having the choice 😊

Definitely. Shower cubicles are pointless unless they are big. We have a small one in our en suite and at 6’ I literally can’t bend over in it.
NeutralJanet · 12/12/2020 20:45

I prefer an over bath shower to a cubicle, it's easier to shave your legs with the edge of the bath to put your feet up on. It's also better having the shower attachment handy for rinsing off the bath when you're cleaning it.
