What floor goes with oak worktops?

In our kitchen/diner we have oak look worktops, platinum (off white/light greyish) cupboards and white herringbone splashback tiles.

What flooring do I go for? If we go wood look do we go lighter or darker than the worktops? I wouldn't want to pick similar and have them slightly clash. Or perhaps tile look are a safer bet than wood? It would be LVT flooring either wood look or stone look so no difference in feel. Purely a cosmetic question. Any suggestions/pics welcome!

I would probably do a similar shade to the worktops..

Lonelycrab · 01/12/2020 19:14

Seeing as it’s all reasonably light colours everywhere, I’d go for a very deep grey slate of some sort. But that’s just meSmile

silkiecat · 01/12/2020 19:21

We have solid oak worktop and solid oak floors but that's easier to match. It's probably worth getting samples and seeing how close you can get, if you can get close I'ld go for a match in oak. If not lighter. Though would look up pictures on the internet and go for what you like.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/12/2020 00:52

If you can't get an extremely close match in wood colour (which would look lovely but I agree it needs to be very close indeed or you risk clashing), then I would stick with stone tile effect.

Since the other kitchen colours are more light/medium tones, I agree with pp I would likely go for a slate look - it would bring out the cooler tones in the cupboards/tiles while still looking "natural/country-style" like the oak worktops.

I love the look of slate! Dh not so keen. He's leaning towards tile looking LVT now though rather than wood. He likes these! Opinions? Karndean pienza and murlo

Hmm I'm not keen on those..
silkiecat · 02/12/2020 18:56

I don't like either of those sorry.

They’re a bit bathroom-ey I think

YellowEllis · 02/12/2020 19:53

I'm just stumped what else. I like oak but dh thinks oak worktops, internal doors and floor is too much. He doesn't like slate or anything dark - he wants it to be light. I can't find much else Sad

This is the option I'd of chosen I think.

This is my last kitchen, very small and simple obviously but the colours are similar to your units and stuff. It’s large tiles, unfinished slate. Crap photo but just trying to helpSmile

We went for a light greyed wood with stone colour units and oak worktops.

The best thing is they're really forgiving and don't show the muck.

I had real slate before and they're awful. Cold, sod to clean too.

TildaTurnip · 02/12/2020 20:08

I’d go for something like Lonelycrab’s!

YellowEllis · 02/12/2020 20:20

This is not our kitchen, but it's our exact cupboards, colours and worktops. We have herringbone white tiles instead of an upstand I've tried a few floors on the Visualizer?

The grey floor (Pic 2 on the visualizer) definitely looks the nicest to me, sorry OP. Maybe you could find a lighter slate like Lonelycrab's if DH doesn't like darker colours.

Pic 3 is okay, just quite a lot of wood so not as nice as Pic 2 for me. Pic 1 might look better with a brighter colour on the walls (at the moment, it's too light/bland).

Yes the picture isn't ours. Our house isn't even built yet, a couple more months yet Smile We will be painting the walls above our herringbone splashback an emerald green.

I've found another first pic is black slate, second pic is grey slate. It would be for kitchen/diner and hallway. We have oak internal doors if that matters

I like the oak floor best, out of the slate prefer the lighter one.

In that case, since your DH doesnt like the slate - I personally would go for the matching mid tone wood effect floor (pic3) , I think the emerald green will look really nice with it! The pale floor (pic1) kind of blends into the cupboard colour and I think the green might look too
strong with it.

silkiecat · 02/12/2020 22:05

We have similar units, solid oak worktop and floor and pale blue walls and that goes well - think pale green would also work.

hedgehogger1 · 02/12/2020 22:05

Don't buy real travertine. We did and I regret it!

YellowEllis · 02/12/2020 22:06

Dh is liking the slate now thinks it's a nice contrast. My worry now is it would be in the hallway too and our carpet is very light cream or not sure if it'll look weird where the slate meets the carpet!

YellowEllis · 02/12/2020 22:07

It's either Karndean or Quickstep LVT not real slate or travertine
